Astonishingly cheap if you buy at the right time

After incentives and hard negotiating (following several hours of research, incl calling dealers in 3 states), I leased a 2020 EX for $700 down and $148.30/month. This is after the $5,000 EV incentive from NJ (Plus NJ has no sales tax on EVs, which is normally part of the down payment) and lease-end incentives from Kia. Unlike Tesla, the $7,500 federal tax incentive is still baked into the lease for Kia. You have to be nuts not to go EV in NJ with all the incentives, and this and the Kona (not quite as practical as the Niro) are the only real choices for value, performance and style.

A solid "B"!

I finally got my long sought EV in February; the culmination of a very long love story going back to the late 80s. Pros: All the normal things associated with an electric car. Kia does a good job of packing a lot of features into their standard packages that would be extras in other cars. Kia dealers will also deal aggressively on occasion resulting in exceptional deals. I chose Niro as it’s interior space was slightly larger than the alternatives at the time, like Bolt and Leaf+, and was easier to get in and out of for this aging frame. Most EVs today have aggressive and useful adjustable regenerative braking and my Niro is no exception. In fact, I think the most transformative feature of electric driving is not the quiet, excellent acceleration, nor the efficiency (4.2 mi/kwh). It’s the one-pedal driving! So effortless, particularly while negotiating hilly / curvy terrain. And I never thought I’d ever use Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping. But they sure come in handy in rush-hour, stop and go traffic. I drove 65 miles through the city during rush hour sans brakes, accelerator and steering! I no longer dread rush-hour. I say to my car, “Lester, take me where I’m going and tell me when you’re done”. Cons: Noisy! Yes, the road noise renders the high quality tunes useless. And any tire noise gets transmitted up to the “B” pillar right next to my ear. I’ve also bought some driving gloves as the steering wheel, though “leather” wrapped, is too slippery. I’m also none too happy that the switch, available on European models, that disables the VESS (faux-engine sound and LOUD back-up beeper) is not available on US models. The most egregious though, the charging algorithm for the “Aux” 12 V battery is undependable. I would have thought that a no brainer. I tried to use the car one morning, and in spite of a 60 mile trip the previous day, the 12 V battery was dead dead. Used my 1989 Astro to go to my doctor appointment…. It got towed to the dealer only to be told “nothing was wrong with the car”. Apparently after being jumped by the tow truck operator it still had enough umph to start for coming off the tow truck and into the service bay. Checking Bing/Google, YouTube, I see where this is unnervingly common! Apparently the 12V charge algorithm doesn’t work very well. If this were an ICE I’d just replace the alternator. So, one additional $68 cost of the car is now the jump-start gizmo I had to buy from Costco (Michelin “Power Bank”) so my new Kia would be as dependable as my 32 year old Chevy. In summation: I love this thing! But can’t wait for the lease to be up in three years to see what non-Tesla (can't drive a car with an i-pad) alternatives are available by then (Ioniq-7, ID-4/6, Ariya, Mach-E?). Exciting stuff

Great Decision

14,000 and 14 months later, I still love this purchase. The car has been flawless in operation and a blast to drive when I want to be frisky. The estimated mileage has been continuously spot on. I’ve averaged around 285 per full charge and on long distance highway trips about 250 (10-15miles less with a/c on). Seating five in a pinch, carrying lumber or dogs, Stashing goods in the hidden compartments, this car got me out of my diesel and gas cars and I’m not looking back.

The Niro EV is nimble, comfortable, practical, attractive, and a blast to drive. The screen doesn't stick up in front of the windshield as seems to be popular with many new cars. Instead, it is un-obtrusive and complimented by several convenient manual controls for things like volume and climate control. The leather-like upgraded seats are very comfortable and seem quite durable. The interior space is great for how compact, overall, the car is. It feels like it has the form factor of a European family wagon/hatchback. Easy to park, responsive to drive, but with enough room for most of life's tasks. I couldn't recommend the car more highly. Oh, and don't forget, that Kia still offers a10 year/100,000-mile warranty even though their build quality has gone up immensely since the company was founded. It's hard for me to think of a better vehicle for the price.

Really solid car

Decently priced (for an EV), decent range, decent comfort. It's basically just a really, really decent car, but it costs around £8 to 'fill the tank' and if you source your charges from renewables it's a really good eco-choice. It's enjoyable to drive (my wife shoves it in 'eco' and it feels like a slowish car - I shift it into 'sport' and it moves nicely). Practicality is decent, entertainment system is decent. I've done lengthy 700 miles trips and it handles it decently. Looks decent. I guess you get the picture - a decent car; but it's the first EV I've experienced that fills that niche. Teslas are cool and can sort of drive themselves, but also are built by people with serious sleep deprivation and you'd better not care too much about paint finish or panel gap. Jag/Audi EV's are great but you better be wealthy to buy one. Peugeot/Citroen et. al. might have EV's but I've never owned a car from them that didn't start shedding trim and mysteriously break 6 months out of warranty. The Niro a decent car, that will please the whole family, it's affordable enough for the class, so far it seems incredibly reliable, the build quality is good, the technology feels solid, it's nice looking and it's one of the few cars my wife hasn't complained about and that's a rarity.

We traded a chevy bolt ev on the Niro ev. Niro is our 3rd ev, nissan leaf being the 1st. We liked the bolt's sportiness but the front seats were uncomfortable, and the recalls were becoming annoying. We drove the mach-e, but didn't wait for a special order or want to go though the recall teething problems again. No rebates on the tesla. Checked out the Niro when a shipment came in, and bought it the same day. We already had a level 2 charger at home from the Bolt ev. we've owned it 3 months and still happy!

Traded in our 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid for the 2022 premium. Kia has removed the memory seats in the new model and side warning lights that were on the previous model. Front collision/parking warning lights are included but side warnings (like navigating in a tight garage) can be added after market for about $600. No explanation from the dealer why these amenities were removed other than "it was a corporate decision." Power trunk latch has still never been offered. UPDATE: We've had this car for a little over a year. That's when we found out the Kia Connect "Ultimate" package that came with the car has been disconnected. No more remote start, no more remote locking, but if you're willing to pay $150 - 200 a year you can keep the services you bought with the car. After paying $40,000+ we thought Kia had enough of our money but they want an annuity after the sale.

Range problems with the Kia Niro 2022

When I bought the car last month and drove it home it had 277 miles of range on it. That was awesome, but after a week it dropped to 239 miles of range on a full charge in eco mode which to me still wasn't too bad, because that is what Kia Advertised in the first place. I just got to 3k miles and the range had dropped to 222 on a full charge. So in less than a months time my rang has dropped 55 miles!!!! I think the update made it worse? I am taking it back to Kia so they can figure it out. It isn't cold where I live so that isn't a factor. I drive during the day so that isn't a factor. I use regenerative braking, keep air in my tires, everything I need to do to get the most range out of my car but I can. It's so frustrating really.

Our Niro has been easy to live with so far. Unless you consistently need over 200 miles of range or plan to drive 75-80 mph for long distances, it's solid, efficient, and surprisingly quick. Cold temps hurt range as does continuous use of climate control. Got ours Oct. 2021 when nobody wanted it and gas was $2.25. Now we drive it as often as we can unless we need to tow or drive on long road trips. Use level 2 charger installed at home and can charge from 5% to 100% in about 8 hours at 7.5 kw/h. For my wife's 50ish mile round trip commute she averages 3.5-4 kwh depending on temp and conditions. Expecting better range again as the weather warms up. Normally set it to charge to 70-80%. Most recent 100% charge showed 235 mile range estimate at 47 degree temperature. If it was at 0% and I charged a full 64kwh at $0.13 it would cost just over $8 at home. At Electrify America chargers it costs $0.31-$0.43 per kwh but we seldom DC fast charge. On short road trips we've used Plug Share app to find hotels or other places we could charge for free. Looking forward to trading for an F150 Lightning when contacted about my reservation. It'll be much less efficient but way more capable with awd, good towing capacity, and similar overall range to our Niro. For over 15 years we've only owned Toyotas (2 Highlanders, a Camry, and 2 Corollas) From now forward, we'll always have an EV and will trade our gas Highlander for a hybrid or phev when/if prices stabilize. Once battery charging speed and range improve, we'll only have EV's. Right now is the golden age if you have time to wait for charging or can afford an EV with high range (like Lucid). Chargers are seldom used when we pass them.

Overall wonderful / remarkably stupid electronics

Wonderful, peppy driving experience; good driving range; practical body design. But this rig has some big and completely unnecessary flaws. The first you will experience is that when in reverse the car issues a VERY LOUD beep like a Home Depot forklift. It will turn all eyes your way and wake up your neighborhood. Really? There are three more serious flaws that have to do with battery management -- the lifeblood of an EV: 1) there is practically no information provided in the Niro User's Guide on the proper care and feeding of EV batteries. It's up to the owner to search the Web, hoping that Tesla batteries and Kia batteries should be treated the same; 2) the display that gives estimated mileage constantly re-calibrates itself based upon your recent drives, which means the driver can NEVER LEARN TO TRUST what the gauge is telling him. Tesla doesn't try to be so stupidly smart. Instead they offer you 3 estimates - based upon past 15 minutes of driving style, past hour, past day (or something like that), giving you a much better sense of your expected range for your current trip. 3) EV batteries should not be charged to 100% unless you are planning to start your drive right away, which makes it important to be able to set the time of charging completion to match your intended departure time for a long trip. But the Niro EV delayed charging system is USELESS. The algorithm it uses starts the charging at the start of the next cheap electric rate period, regardless of the intended departure. Really?

SOMEBODY HELP ME WITH THIS CAR THAT DOESNT WORK .

This 2022 Kia Niro EV has not been working well since the first day. I reported it to the dealership since the first day and they just ignore me. The car and the dealership are no good. Here’s the list: 1. Wireless charger and usb connectors working intermittently. (1st day) 2. The warning light says “The rear right brake light not working” (1st week) Lights up intermittently. 3. The passenger seatbelt like flashes and beeps for about ten minutes when there are no passengers in the car and nothing on the seat. Intermittently . 4. The warning light - put car in back in park when I put in reverse. Intermittently. 5. The charge drops like 50-60 miles after I charge it completely and start the car. (Without using any electricity in the car. ) 6. This car actually gives me about 115 miles per full charge of 238 miles. 7. The electric system is not good at all. I had to tow the car several times since I bought the car and the dealership refuses to take responsibility of what’s wrong with the car instead they give me brochures on the car as if I were brain dead. I’m insulted by far. It’s cruel and on purpose to try to convince me that it’s all in my head. I have pictures and video and proof of this car that doesn’t work as a car should. I charge this car everyday and it’s caused a lot of different hardships in my life. I’ve been trying to get help every where and I’m not being heard. I’ve never been so ignored in my life with this car and it’s ailments that are causing me physical and emotional stress and ailment’s. It’s damaged and it’s continuing to cause me damage. 8. The sounds of nature button on the screen disappeared after I took it to the service department last week. Lol. It keeps getting worst. 9. My phone was not connected to the car correctly and the dealership won’t fix that either so I’m unable to use the remote access to my car. 10. The unlock button for the passenger doors on the key fob works intermittently . 11. The unlock button for the trunk doesn’t work at all and I needed the automatic open up because I’m injured . SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE ELECTRIC SYSTEM. THATS OBVIOUS. AN HONEST KNOWLEDGEABLE ELECTRIC MECHANIC WILL VERIFY THIS AND KNOW HOW TO CHECK IT PROPERLY. Ps: The dealership did find the issues the first time I brought it in and told me they just reset the system and that’s why I’m continuing to have the same issues and more.

This is the car to strongly consider if you are looking to get away from burning fossil fuels. It rides comfortably and quiet without too much body roll or road noise. Mileage anxiety should be put to bay as this car will easily achieve up to 270 miles on a full charge.

The Kia Niro EV is a smooth-running, well-designed compact SUV. Peppy and smart. Handles well. Shows 240-250 mile range on a full charge. Previous car was a 20-yr old Honda Accord, which I loved driving. This electric car is fun to drive, and part of the pleasure is zero emissions. It's also great to have all the smart features as compared to the old car. One month in, and I'm very pleased with the car. Not negatives, but some of the trade-offs include smaller cabin and storage space as compared to the Accord, which will be a limitation only the relatively few times I'm loading up a car for a trip, etc. Also, I'm not entirely confident with having a sealant to fix a flat tire instead of a spare, so I've purchased a spare-tire kit. I'm very happy with the car and optimistic that it will be as reliable as my Hondas.

5 star car but the small things ruin it

We just got one and we love it but there's a few things that knock it down a bit for me. I know they're not huge issues, but with a little forethought they could've made this car basically perfect. Firstly, they put their kind of crappy sat nav which prevents you from using wireless android auto. The mild inconvenience of having to plug in my phone isn't as big of a deal as them making their sat nav standard and losing what would otherwise be a pretty good perk. Hundreds of dollars for this sat nav straight out of the year 2000 that I will never use and prevents me from using the sat nav I want to use in the way I want to use. Secondly, the software on their touchscreen is poorly organizex. Too many icons that can do the same thing, nevermind the fact that there are manual buttons for half the software buttons. Additionally, when trying to access the Kia software while using Android auto, you can't go back the home screen to use another app. You have to go to radio or map by pressing the manual buttons then press the software home button. While we're on the software, $200 a year for their car app?! Another issue, and perhaps the biggest safety issue, is they have steering wheel paddles that will charge your car while it stops it but don't apply the break lights. Living in a city means I basically can't use the paddles. Lastly, and perhaps the potentially most expensive, is they put the charging port in the front. It is a very mild convenience for very costly replacement with the tiniest fender bender. With all that said, I'd buy another one...

Get this 315 mile range car!

I could go on and on about all the things I like about this car, but the main thing is...315 miles of range! EPA rating of 239 not even close. When fully charged, my range varies between 300 and 326 miles. Also, my range has INCREASED since purchasing this car last year even though range should decrease about 2% a year. In full disclosure, I always drive in ECO mode, use maximum regeneration, don't accelerate or brake hard and drive pretty gentle. However, shouldn't we all drive that way anyway? Now this is NOT a sports car, but for day to day driving and a great price (with federal/state incentives), I highly recommend it. 240V charger in my garage takes about 8-9 hours for full charge. No more gas stations. Never thought I'd own an electric car, at least not this soon, but I will never go back to ICE again.

We were all in love with this car. Then, on day, it would not go in to gear. They towed it in, supposedly fixed it. A week later, same thing in a parking lot. Then they kept it for almost 3 months and could not fix it. We are now trying to get our money back from Kia...and it has taken almost a month to get a decision from them. The dealer was useless on this-they wanted to give us"trade in value" to buy another car. Very disappointed...

Kia eNoro range far longer than EPA rating

Love my Kia eNiro more and more as I've driven it. Power and agility are better than other SUVs Ive driven and owned in that size. Range has much further than the 239 mile EPA range, which puzzled me. Then Edmunds published a real world range test (Feb. 9, 2021) showing eNiro with 289 miles of range which matched what i was seeing. Haven't had to pay for gas or wait in gas line in over a year, no Jiffy Lube bills either. Half my electric I've found for free around town at the Mall and grocery stores. Best car I have owned and I've owned many in my 50+ years!

It’s been one year and 10,000 miles on my 2021 Niro premium EV, and I do really love this car. First off economy, I drive mostly short trips under 100 miles, and average about 4.4 miles per kw or 290 miles per full charge. Highway speeds of 75-80 drops to 3.5, same for winter months. Overall save about $160:a month on gas! Acceleration is impressive in sport mode, lAlmost Like my wife’s Tesla dual motors and very acceptable in Eco mode. Handling is competent, comfortable seats and ride. I prefer the in dash display screen over the iPads type, most features easy to use, and monitoring of speed, recharging, and miles/kw display reminds of economy driving. Agree too many icons on screen when swiping, but a minor nuisance. Lastly, being a frequent golfer, I love the storage tray under the fold down rear section, It literally holds all my golfing gear, oleaving the floor free of loose items. Sporty looking too! I see it’s rated #2 behind only Tesla 3, about 25 grand less! Also , install a charger if you can, check rebates, PA gives $1000 or more, income dependent. Lastly, plenty of charging stations, and shows closest e while driving. It’s 2years and now 22,000 miles and after re reading my review I have to say ‘dittio’ I truly agree with all my original comments today. Actual miles per kw is up to 4.6, and if it’s driven easy have hit 5.0, so averaging about 300 miles range, that’s over many new EVs. I use the paddle controls for breaking often, adds to feel of driving. Breaks are about 12% used after 22k so no break replacement in sight for a long time. Lastly in house charger is best, but for my driving I use the 110 line, and have a Tesla charger installed for my wife’s T 3. Kia has been terrific! Now 26,000 and all of above applies. Miles per kw remains in the 4.5 + driving in eco majority of time

Best car I've had

My previous car was a 2015 Ford Fusion Hybrid, which I loved. After almost 8 years and nearly 100,000 miles, I decided to trade it in while it was still worth something. I knew I wanted an EV, and was planning to get a Chevy Bolt, but got tired of waiting for the manufacturing pause to end. I did a little further research and decided to check out the Kia Niro EV in person. As soon as I saw it on the lot, I knew it was my car. It's cute in a conventional way, it has an impressive amount of tech that I actually use, the seats are comfortable (my main complaint about the Fusion was that the front seats were terrible), and the size is just right. Though it is a little different to drive than a conventional car, it was easy to learn and not at all intimidating. Most impressively, I have always gotten well over the EPA range rating; I average over 300 miles per charge. This is a well-designed, good-looking, and user-friendly EV and I will never go back to an internal combustion engine.

Great price for what you get. It's fast! Also, has plenty of cargo space. Safety features are best, and comes standard. I like the auto adjustable driver's seats, heated seats and wheel, apple/android play.. all standard. You get a lot for your money, with one of the top warranties out there.

Excellent So Far

I’ve had the car 2 weeks, and I am not a high mileage driver. There are a lot of functions new to me that I’ve not yet tried, probably others I haven’t discovered. However, even before mastering any, this is a great car. Although the Niro EV is smaller than the sedans I’ve driven for 15+ years (Kia Amonti, Hyundai Azera), it feels roomier inside while leaving significantly more room to park 2 cars in a tight 2-car garage. The range is about 280 miles, so a round trip to Wisconsin (101 miles away/ 202 round trip) was completed with plenty miles to spare. Although highway mileage drains more juice, the difference was just 25 more miles over the round trip. Acceleration is faster and smoother than any car I’ve driven in over 50 years. Braking & handling are also smooth. The Smart Cruise Control does great reducing & restoring speed on highways (70 mph down to 50 mph & back to 70) as traffic conditions change. So far, I have only used the 120V slow charger that comes with the car without problems.

Extremely pleased, would be a 4.5 star if I could have entered it. New Aug 31st, excellent deal with existing VW Jetta 2019 LEASED used as trade in, over $10,000 less with Fed $7500rebate and $3300 dealer incentives. Note VW would not allow Kia dealer the $14,200 payoff for me, instead charge$16,700, Jim Sipala accepted the extra bucks. Got a check from VW for $2700 2 weeks later, he’ll of a deal. Swapped my 23k VW for a 46k EV for $65 more a month, save $75 a month on gas based on 1k miles mthly. EVs Yes! The Kia Niro after 2500 miles provides just about everything the mfg claims it does. The acceleration is so smooth and instant, it’s fun to drive just normally let alone pushing it some. Handling quite acceptable, maneuvers great. Highway speeds 70 + feels safe and is quiet., did 90 feels same as 70. Premium model has everything in the way of safety features and luxury as well. Back up sound bings especially helpful n parking lots. Already avoided parking lot collision with auto brake feature. Lastly, mileage range is right on spec at 4 miles per kw, I managed up to 4.5 in summer, that’s 288 range, now in winter about 275 range. I drive reasonably, but not at posted, mostly round town. The regeneration braking is the reason, and you can control how much applies. Negatives? Mostly the display screen, lots of control features to deal with. I’m 78 so little slow on the tech side. Eating used to it. Put Juice charging station in our attached garage, costs $700 plus $550 install 220 line, less PA $750 and Peco $50 rebates, net cost $450 no brainer, and overnight charge a simple plug in. Wif gettinggTesla long range in Jan, with adapter plug, will charge both EVs. AND NOW WE WILL BOTH “PASS GAS”

This car was everything I expected - The only thing I have a negative about is the quick depletion of the 26 mile battery usage. I suppose that is my fault as I drive it more than I expected :)

Generally we average about 4mi/kwh = 2.8 cents per mile where we live. Very comfortable. Fun to drive. BUT if you want to be very comfortable in the winter or very hot summer, you will not get 3 mi/kwh. And your 100% range is closer to 200 miles. It seems that recharging to only 80% is recommended. With rebates our Level II charger cost about $500 installed by an electrician. Ugly truth. Tires wear out much faster because of weight and xtra torque. Figure 30-35K...and about $600-800+ to replace. Some tires give you better EV range and some last longer-- greater cost per mile. Since about 15%+ of tire cost is installation, it would seem that a longer lasting tire that gives you about 10% less EV range would be the best.

12 v aux battery problems

Bordergal, 11/09/2024

2022 Kia Niro EV S 4dr SUV (electric DD)

For the first year, I loved this car. But in year two, problems with the 12-v auxiliary battery started to emerge. Three times I have had to jump start the car with an extra 'drained battery boost.' Three other times the car powered up but refused to go into gear; jump starting by a portable jumper and by AAA and still not being able to go into gear left me no option but to have the car towed to a KIA dealership. The first time it was towed in, the 12-v was empty, despite normal driving conditions. The next time, the 12-v battery was low after having driven about 80 miles. The third time happened just after normal local driving with a registered 12.85 charge on the 12-volt battery. In all cases, the car went into gear once the charge on the 12-v exceeded 12 volts. It seems that either: there is some vampire drain on the 12-v, the HV battery isn't charging the 12-v, or some mechanical or software problem is interfering with normal communication between the HV & 12-v batteries. A few months ago, I installed a 12-volt battery monitor and check the charge each time I park and turn off the car. Each time the car is turned off, the 12-volt battery charge drops dramatically. If I immediately turn the car back on, the battery level immediately returns to normal. Since I've done this, I had a problem only once, and a quick boost solved the problem. Three dealers now have blamed me for things that I know are not true: not driving enough or leaving the lights on. I am very frustrated with KIA not taking the problem seriously.

Perhaps it is because my old car was a 2012, but this car has so many great features...and I keep discovering more. Yesterday I put my book bag in the back seat, and when I stopped it said "check the back seat". I'm sure this feature is to remind you to take the baby inside, but it also works with bookbags...I also found a free charging station (right in front of my local police department) only 2 blocks from my house, so I've never had to pay to charge it...Little Fiat (which had great gas milage) was about $30 every week and a half...so you can't beat the fuel cost...
