I Don't Know How They're So Popular
First a few positives. The car is comfortable, (when standing still) and was inexpensive when well equipped. The HVAC system has rear seat vents with controls and deflectors. The rear hatch is powered and has a proximity sensor. Mine was purchased as a new demo with about 6,000 miles. I traded in a nearly new Elantra that made me feel like I needed to go through the concussion protocol driving our horrible roads to work every day. I figured the bigger Tucson would have a better ride. It does, but still not as good as some sedans that weigh significantly less, get better gas mileage and don't freak out in windy conditions. And while bulky, it's not a large vehicle. I had to fold down the rear seat to fit an electric guitar (and not even a bass) in its case recently. And wow, does it hate wind. Some days I have to fight to keep it on the road, and all the while it pops up an annunciation "Keep Hands on the Steering Wheel." Admittedly, that's the level of tech for the sensor, but this car's handling in windy conditions makes it especially annoying. The instrument cluster has a nice center display, with useful info and a menu system that works well, but I'm not crazy about the speedometer or tachometer. I get that with modern stepper motor based gauges a 160MPH range gives you even steps per MPH. But it could've been angled so it doesn't look like driving the posted speed is slow. My biggest reasons for the negative review, however are related to the non-vehicle aspects. Every time I take it in for routine service, it seems to cost $200 or more. Some examples... brake fluid change every 20k miles and transmission fluid change at 30k. At first I thought the dealer was trying to fleece me, but no, that's actually in the book. They did an oil change right before delivery, so the schedule is a little wonky. I'll get a service, then about a month later I'll get texts, emails, phone calls and pop-up messages on the infotainment screen saying I'm overdue critical maintenance. Somehow, the car is in Hyundai's system twice. I'll get an email saying what maintenance is coming due or the car's condition or whatever and the one either directly above or below is one saying that I should subscribe to their service. Starting about 15 years ago, I wouldn't get a new car without remote start. I'm too old to get into a sub-zero car in the mornings, and as a hyper-miler I don't use it unless absolutely necessary. Press a button on the key fob and good to go. But on this car, it's a "service" that costs $10 per month and requires opening an app on my phone, with face and text authentication, and takes about 5 minutes from when you finally get to the command button. Minor annoyances? The biggest is that when accelerating, as it passes about 44MPH it shifts into 6th gear. Then at 45MPH it unlocks the convertor so the engine RPM jumps. In high gear it won't lock the convertor unless the cruise is set. The stereo has some sort of spatial enhancement that can't be disengaged. Some of my favorite stations on Sirius/XM are already doing that, and you can barely hear the vocals on some songs, but in this car those songs sound more like karaoke versions. The visor mirrors have a handy light on the headliner, and there's a little nib on the visor that is supposed to turn the light off when the visor is stowed. On mine, at least, it's not lined up properly so the only thing that little nib does is put a dent in the headliner. (Driver and passenger side.) Bottom line? I'll not buy another one, or any Hyundai. I Don't Know How They're So Popular.
