A Patchwork Quilt Makes for a Mixed Message
The Good: It's a Honda, it's likely to be reliable, seats 5 comfortably, the interior looks nice, and the controls are good, with the exception of the infotainment system. The Bad: Let's call it "too much technology, not perfectly integrated." This car is a mild-mannered version of Frankenstein's monster - the parts don't quite all belong or work well together, but it's alive! Imagine: You're zipping along in EV mode, you have the LKAS system running, the steering is easy, ACC is tracking the car ahead of you, you can barely hear the car and your music is crystal clear. Life is good. Now in the next second, the car runs out of EV-level battery and the IC engine kicks in at high revs and the whine rips through your Mozart. Meanwhile, the lane starts to curve away from the car faster than the LKAS can track and with a beep the car abruptly hands full control of the wheel back to you because unlike say, a Tesla, lane keeping is fair but not stellar. And the car ahead of you pulls out of your lane and ahead is a third car stopped at a light, and ACC doesn't see it because the system doesn't register stationary objects, so now you have to panic stop the car before CMBS kicks in, unless of course, you're doing more than 100 kph in which case CMBS is disabled. Yeah, it's in the manual, look it up. The back is big enough to accommodate a 10,000 psi H2 tank, because this body is the same as the fuel cell Clarity, so it looks like someone inflated the rear of the car. You'd think that this gives you a big trunk, and it does, but the pass thru to the 60/40 split seat is small and compromised for no good reason. The suspension is way too soft and on the bumpy transitions from overpasses to the highway, the car oscillates vertically like an old hotel mattress as you toss and turn in the night. The well intentioned detent in the gas pedal travel to remind you that you're transitioning from EV to running the gas engine seems like overkill when you're likely to be running the IC engine anyway after the first 40 miles, so if you need to floor the pedal to get in the passing lane, the click in your foot is an annoying distraction. The paddle shifters for regenerative braking are cute but really, useless. I doubt anyone uses them after a first experimental pass. This car is a science project gone mainstream, and maybe predicts that Gen. 2 will be a lot better. I'm glad I'll be turning it back in in 2022.

Clarity with design default.
I owned this car for over 3 month. Overall the performance is good with enough Torte power provided by the battery. There are some issues on this car. 1. The mileage range always give a wrong number. Full Tank, Full battery, some time will give 500 to 700 miles. Indeed, Full gas tank approx. 7 gallon & Full Battery you can only drive approx. 350 miles. 2. The air vent right by the door windows is not a good design. Whenever your AC is on, there is always air blow out from that vent, even you change the air blow position to floor only, it create the water condensation to the windows outside, and it block the view to the side mirror, even you try to roll down the window, it doesn't help. It's a safety issue for the driver, you are not able to see the side mirror clearly, especially whenever rains outside.3. Excessive road noisy from underneath whenever at 60 mph or above. And the 1.5 litter engine sometimes run loud on and off. 4.Short full tank mileage range for only 350 miles. Without plug in charging every day, you have to fuel the gas every 10 days for normal commute. 5.Does plug in really save the gas money? Not for this model, the electricity cost to full charge at home is about 3 dollars for 12 hrs with 120v charger, with Full charge you can drive approx. 45 miles. Nowadays, the average regular unlead gas is 3 dollar or less. You can do the math. The MSRP for this plug in is over 33K, maybe you qualify for 7500 fed tax rebate, it still expensive, there is a better choice. If you are not special interested in plug in model for save the green environment, 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid would be much better choice in terms choice overall in msrp price, comfort, and full tank range & MPG. 6. Honda sensing is a joke. It actually creates more dangers situation for the driver. The ACC and land keep assist, migrating land departure often time doesn't work and without warning, And some time it will break un expectly whenever you making a curve turn, and there is car pass by from other direction. If the system doesn't work perfectly, as a driver you don't want to use them and rely on them at all since it often time it will give false move.

Dangerous vehilcle
I drive for a living. I’ve had my clarity for 5 months and 6000 miles. The gas mileage is good, I definitely do like that feature. But, I’ve had 4 unsafe situations where I was afraid I was going to be hit by other cars and was afraid for my life. So, here is the situation. I live in Buffalo, NY. If I sit in the car and write for 15 mins ( with the engine running ) and I am out of electricity (I only get 35 miles electricity) when I go to drive again, the car will not move. I push on the accelerator to the max and the most acceleration I can get is 10 to 20 miles per hour. I drive on busy roads and one time I was merging into traffic on the expressway. It is very scary having cars veer to not hit you. I cannot wait to return my lease. ☹️

Nice leap in PHEV, but...
Taking advanced engineering into this PHEV, Honda should have used 2018 design inside the car to match the PHEV tech. Honda missed a great opportunity to have one of the best cars on the road had they used the 2018 Accord interior design and instrumentation. Not having knobs on a touch screen which performs slowly, nor offering a sunroof (even as an option) are two variants that should not have been missed by Honda. I had been considering this vehicle as my top choice until I took it for a several hour test drive and became underwhelmed. Even the $7500 tax credit is not enough to lure me away from the 2018 Accord Hybrid, which will likely be my choice once it hits the market this spring.

Great new car
We recently bought the new Honda clarity plug-in hybrid. One day after purchasing the vehicle we embarked on a 3000 mile road trip. The car performed beautifully. With the charged battery we were able to get about 330 miles, using only 6 gallons of gas. Handled beautifully on highway, ample acceleration, comfortable ride. This car is a little bigger than the Accord.

Honda Clarity EV - shows a still uncertain path
We leased this car (it is available ONLY as a lease in CA and OR with no option to buy). With 14,000 miles on it over 28 months months, I can say this with certainty: I will not rue the day my lease ends! The car is quite substantial and if its 89-mile range works for you, as it does for us, you get a whole lot of car for the price. In our case, with all our various benefits factored in, it was quite affordable. But Honda needs do a lot - a WHOLE lot - before it has a competitive car. Sheesh. What can I say? Why would anyone want to make the simple act of shifting gears a mental exercise WHILE AT THE SAME TIME destroying the utility of the central column. Uh, better ask Honda this question. But myriad other questions exist with how they ended up with certain parts/ways/manners/looks of the car that make me wonder how Honda decided that this car stood for the Honda name. And I have had a lifetime of Hondas. Yes, it runs well. But the other parts of the driver's experience are just plain lacking.

Very happy with this purchase!
This car is quiet and has a very smooth drive. Acceleration allows easy highway entry and passing. The driving range when fully charged is a bit over 500 miles and I'm getting the equivalent of 155/gal combining EV and HV modes.

Marginal
The Clarity is competent. In EV mode, it drives well but is not "fun" relative to my two previous EVs, a Nissan Leaf and VW eGolf. In New England winters, the EV range is short, low 30s. In hybrid mode is adequate below 50 mph. On the highway, it is unpleasant. The engine is loud and it struggles over 65 mph. The cruise control is imprecise +/- 4mph and the fronts seat are roomy but uncomfortable. My motivation in getting a plug-in hybrid after two EVs to complement my other car, an Audi A4, was to have the best of two worlds. At best is marginal, as an EV and as a gas powered cruiser.

Extremely disappointed!
Car delivered by SB Honda with 160 miles, came from other dealer that had it for 6 months. It was dirty inside, lots of marks on outside, dead battery (yes on an electric car and the service guy has the guts to say: there is a full tank of gas)!! The car was steering to the right, rear panel had to be repainted because of a ding. I feel like I was sold a used vehicle with problems. Paperwork was already signed so I was stuck with it. Electronic problems after 2 days: back up camera not working, radio frozen for 3 days, A/C not turning on, engine turning on by itself multiple times when battery was full and I had never even touched the HV mode, then after about 18 different issues (still waiting for tech guy at that point) the battery indicator went down to 1 bar on the display (not possible per Honda) and the engine started to scream like we were pedal to the metal and at same time we lost speed down to 36 mph on freeway. So scary that I told dealership to come a pick the car up. Dealer called Honda tech, never anyone showed up and still 2 month later we are waiting. Service department put on service receipt that alignment is ok, cannot reproduce issues or wrote that sales department will show client how to operate HV mode. Really? They all that repair? Now it’s been over 2 months, car still at dealership, I have no car to drive but make payments, Honda does not want to help and sends us to dealer. Dealer says to deal with Honda. About to go the legal way or let dealership buy the piece of s... back from us. Don’t care how much I lose, I will not drive an unsafe and not fixed vehicle. After 20 Honda dirt bikes, multiple Hondas & Acuras I am so disappointed that I will never buy another Honda. And btw the stereo sucks, check the watts and compare to other models before you buy. It is as bad as Honda’s customer service! 6 months later and 4 recalls Honda still no help SHAME ON HONDA! 2 years later, 38k miles, still riddled with issues. Honda refuses to do anything of course...DO NOT BUY THIS CAR, you will regret it!! PS: Honda pulled it from all States except California, that’s how bad it is.

Right decision!
After reading about all of the different plug-in hybrid cars, we bought a used 2018 Honda Clarity. I'm very happy with it! It's gorgeous inside and out (the back end grew on me), has a smooth ride, most of the safety features I wanted - and I can do all my daily driving to/from work and around town on electric power!
This is an ideal car for expressway/city driving
This is an ideal car for mixed city and expressway driving. We love this car! The exterior may be a bit unusual with the rear wheel fender design, but it more than makes up for that with the very tasteful and comfortable interior. Acceleration is immediate with great torque and no noise (We manage to always leave them at the stop lights). I can't say much more than what others have said here already, they have covered its fine features nicely. But I can add that we usually get 58-60 miles range on an electric charge (that's in standard mode not econ) and we rarely buy gas. What's not to love.

Great car with Fantastic Gas Mileage!
Very comfortable with lots of room. Nicest car in the Plug-In Hybrid spectrum.
Great MPG, with a catchy appearance.
It is not a hotrod, but if that's what you want get another car. But for economy, good acceleration, safety features, comfort and looks it is a great car. I've put gas in the car 3 times and have calculated mileage of 102, 105,8, & 95 mpg. There is a learning curve, but it makes the car fun to drive. The plug-in is the correct car for me!

Not sure
Had many little quirks (electrical) and when taken back to dealer there’s nothing wrong. Also, driver door not well seated wind noise. Had a horrible shift from electric to gas noisy and lose of power. Mileage is hard to know sometimes it says I get 163 mpg and sometimes 25. Sometimes battery lasts sometimes I’m out of electrical fast. I like the car but I’m worried because it has too many little things that I worry about that I believe should be a software adjustment but Honda says nothing is wrong

Great CAR with a few issues
Have two maint issues that keep popping up, took it in to the dealership (after owning the car for 2 weeks) only to get the answer that it is a known problem, and nothing we can do. The other issue I have is when running in Hybrid mode. When stopped at a stop light, it should go to batt, but if it was using gas, the gas engine stays running. To me this is a problem for stop and go traffic.

Two Months of owning and already having issues
I bought this car about two months ago. Car already is making noise while driving. Took it to dealership and they said bearings went bad. I wonder if they could diagnose properly. I can't believe this is happening with a Honda. I refused to take delivery of my Tesla Model 3 thinking i have a plugin Hybrid and anyway my commutes are short throughout the day.

Initial Problems Ignored
The driver's side window does not seat well into the door frame. The wind noise is annoying above about 45 mph. Honda said the installation was correct and that there should be no noise. However, when I place a dollar bill and roll the window up, the dollar bill can be easily removed. My claim was denied and the only option left was arbitration. Now I am leery about keeping a car with new technology, since Honda really does not back their products even when there is an obvious issue with the car.

Spousal disagreement
many hybrids are not very attractive including the clarity and prius prime. My wife liked the prime better because it was smaller and fit her preferences better. If the car was for me I would have chosen the clarity because it was bigger could hold 5 the Prius only 4. The clarity was more comfortable and had a spacious trunk unlike the Prius Prime where the batteries make the usable trunk very limited especially with the hatchback limiting the overhead space.

Battery is not as advertised
I bought the 2018 clarity expecting the battery to charge to 48 miles as advertised. My battery only charges to a max of 36. In addition, in stop and go traffic the battery drains 3miles in a city block. This is not as expected over all the marketing material.

3 months and counting
Observations after 3 months with my Honda Clarity plug in hybrid: 1. The engine is really, really noisy when running compared with my 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. 2. The person who designed the center console should fall on their sword! The wings extend into the drivers knee room, and they have no function! They also prevent you from seeing what is in the storage area below. 3. The cup holders are so close together that you can’t put two small fountain drink cups in without them overlapping. Two big gulps would be impossible. 4. With a full charge and a full tank of gas the distance to empty shows over 700 miles!!! With a 7 gallon tank that would be over 100 MPG. Honda clams about 330, which is about right. 5. I really miss blind spot detection. I had it for 8 years on my fusion. 6. The wiper stalk on the right is confusing to someone used to them on the left for over 60 years. This is my first none GM, Ford, or Chrysler. 7. Overall not a bad car. With my electric cost and present price of gas, I get about 45mpg gas and 130 mpg comparing $/Mile for electric. From experience with my Fusion Hybrid I expect the electric cost per mile to rise more that the gas.

Highly exaggerated range.
Beware. Car fully charged, and range listed as 31 miles. Averages 30 to 34 miles, which is a third of the promised 45+ range. Have had car since mid November. Driven 3000 miles. Also, the touchscreen freezes up frequently. I have taken car back to Honda dealer. Cant figure out the issue. Contacted Honda, who referred me back to dealer. Learn from my mistake. Avoid the Clarity.

It's a brick in the snow!
First, I enjoy the clarity for the most part... As others have said, and I agree that the combustion engine gets very loud! It is a really comfortable ride. I do get about 50 per charge. The seats are comfortable. The led headlights are pretty lame... The difference between low and high is very small. I had to adjust the lights higher to get anything that is drive able at night. Last week we had a snow storm, 5.5 inches when done. At the time of a test drive in the snow, there was maybe 2.5 inches on the ground. My son and I went to a large unplowed parking lot. Cannot drive this car more than 9 miles per hour! Steering is only straight! Braking at this speed is a 40 foot slide... I bought a set of snow tires and praying for a miracle!

2018 Base Clarity perfect commuter car + ZERO gas
When I started looking for a PHEV, I tried out the BMW X5e, 530e, Audi eTron A3, Mitsubishi Outlander, Chevy Volt, and Toyota Prius Prime. What set this Honda apart was the huge cabin interior, quiet ride, 47 miles per charge, and a responsive ride. Then when I found out that the $34K Clarity is more affordable than any other brand with: $7600 lease incentive + $500 employee discount + dealer discount + $1500 state + $1000 local utility rebate = $20K car. Super affordable and super low payments with zero gasoline so far. The original tank of fuel from the dealer is still full! Love having to not fill up every week - saving me $200 in gasoline costs. Electricity has only gone up $20 per month which is spectacular! The factory supplied level 1 charger is perfect as I leave the car overnight in the garage to get a full charge. Southern California is best for this type of vehicle because the range is not diminished by low temps. I usually get 45-53 miles per charge daily. Definitely a high tech car to have and makes my commute fun with the regenerative shift paddles to save on break wear! With the low residual value (RV), this lease might end up as a keeper at the end of 3 years. The buyout price is $14K so if the car does not give me issues, I will keep her!

Honda Clarity PHEV -- A no brainer on many levels
I have owned the Honda Clarity PHEV for about 18 months and 12,000 odometer miles. So far, I would estimate I have burned fewer than 75 gal. of gasoline, while the rest has been all-electric. The Clarity is different. First, it is a plug-in hybrid, so it takes you ~50 miles on electricity alone and another 330 mi. with the 7 gal., pressurized (for gas preservation reasons) gas tank. That means that the extended electric range covers most people's daily driving needs, without using any gasoline. However, electric range anxiety is eliminated with the option to use gasoline as the fuel, should the electric range not be enough for your driving needs on a given trip. Second, the Clarity is a full-size sedan, with comfortable seating for five adults and a very large trunk with pass-through. Third, the car features the latest in safety technologies. Fourth, there is a $7,500 federal income tax credit (and some similar state rebates or credits, depending on where you live) that immediately reduce the vehicle's cost to a buyer or lessee, even though the Clarity is already affordable compared to many other vehicles and substantially below the cost of a Tesla (for example). (The price paid for the vehicle below is net of $10K in tax credits and state rebates applicable to me.) Fifth, the first-year "kinks" are in the past, so if you buy or lease a 2019 or 2020 model you will be good to go (although in most states other than California, you will likely have to order the car from a Honda dealer to get one). Sixth, the warranty is good -- the traction battery warranty runs from 8 to 10 years (depending on which state you live). All in all, this may be the best car I have owned (which, at my age, covers many makes & models over the years).

Best car I ever owned
After 14 months and 25,000 miles the Clarity still meets all expectations and more. I average around 55 miles of range on electric power in summer and around 40 in the coldest part of winter, or 47 for a year round average. The car drives great, extremely quiet as you’d expect, and is marvelously engineered to make all the adjustments needed on the fly for driving conditions. I had a great Accord Hybrid before this which got nearly 50 mpg, but the Clarity has reduced our fuel cost by $200/month so far. All this and no tailpipe emissions. The future is now.

Love this car!
I traded in my Honda Civic Touring (17) for this Clarity Touring PHEV. The Clarity is so comfortable and the size fits my family of 4 well. The trunk, while a bit oddly shaped, is huge. The Clarity drives like a charm. This does not drive like a sports car, but it does drive like a very comfy, solid, and well-balanced family sedan. Acceleration is more than sufficient for on-ramps, freeways, etc. Braking is good, and I like that I can use the paddles to adjust the regenerative braking settings. The climate control has worked great so far. Some reviews knock the infotainment screen interface, but, as a former Honda owner, I think it is fine. Even when I first experienced the knobless interface on my old Civic, it took about 10 days to get used to it, and I've never been bothered by it. (Great audio controls are on the steering wheel, btw.) I use the EV mode 95% of the time. I get about 50 miles per charge, and that takes care of all of my driving most days. An overnight charge from a standard 110v outlet in my garage is easy and sufficient for a full charge. When the charge runs down and the car switches to hybrid mode, the transition is seamless. The first couple of weeks I had the car I didn't even notice the gas engine kicking in (other than for a very gradual decrease in the gas gauge reading. I've had the car for six weeks now, and I just had my first fill-up today with 5.3 gallons. I filled the Civic weekly (and my wife does weekly fill-ups on her subaru). My wife loves driving this car, too. We both feel good about dumping less carbon into the atmosphere. We've adjusted our vehicle usage so that whoever is doing the most running around in a day takes the Clarity so that our environmental impact is maximized. I think both of us hopes we are one doing the running around so that we can drive the Clarity. (She typically drives a loaded Subaru Ascent.)

So glad I bought this - while it was available!
I knew the Clarity wouldn't be as popular as Accords I have had over the years. But I actually like that, and clearly the resale market does as well. I absolutely love this car! Maybe even more than my first-generation Accord, which was top of its class back in the day. At 4.5 years the range hasn't decreased much, maybe by a couple of miles. With the range still over 40 miles on electric, I rarely ever buy gas. Have not had a single issue at 40,000 miles. Appreciate the various settings and controls such as the paddles for engaging regenerative braking. Gives me that control I would otherwise miss without a manual transmission. It was difficult to find much detail on the car when I purchased it, but I have found out a lot more about it along the way. Such at the fact that it charges at twice the rate of all other plug-in hybrids (Clarity charging being comparable to full-electric car charge rates on Level 2 chargers). I had my last Accord until it was totalled at 420,000 miles, I intend to keep this car for a long time as well. No need to buy an all-electric car when this eliminates over 90% of my gas usage, while using a much smaller battery. Which hopefully will be much cheaper to replace when that time comes. There are a few general things about the car that aren't 5 Star. Road noise is a bit much. There isn't much storage in the passenger compartment, the USB and power ports are comically difficult to get to. The entertainment system is of just average quality, pokey-slow, and a victim of "cool" early knobless design that I know Honda has since gone away from. Fake wood and stitching on the dash and doors isn't quite 1980's Buick, but echoes it. Plastic brushed chrome interior decoration is actually painted black plastic, so of course it's wearing off where it gets handled frequenlty. Door thresholds are painted body metal, not plastic trim. Shiney black plastic on the center console controls. So no surprise that those also all show wear as well. Hasn't Honda learned not to do this by 2018? Overall though, I really do love the car and find it crazy that Honda, the engine company, sees no future in plug-in hybrids.

I love my new Clarity
I have only had it for a month, so I haven't had any issues with it, but it is wonderful. I love the fact that I can mostly run on Electric charge unless I take a longer trip (>40 miles) and then I switch to hybrid mode that engages the gas engine. It is so quite and smooth while driving it. It is very spacious and the leather trim looks very nice. I still have some issues with the carplay vs bluetooth connection where it doesn't always work smoothly or recognize my voice options, but overall it is wonderful. Would highly recommend to have the best of both worlds with a hybrid as I don't ever have range anxiety.

Great spacious PHEV seats 5 comfortably
Very comfortable, powerful PHEV hybrid. Unbelievable mileage per gallon. Can rin most of my errands on electric alone, but i love having the security of being able to go to any gas station when electric is low. Very spacious back seat and large trunk with seats that lie down. Sometimes its hard to get in if seat isn't back which can be fixed with automatic seat programming. Overall, great new Honda model. Highly recommend it.

You do have to learn to think when driving so you get the most out of your battery and gas. A lot of fun to drive, spacious on the inside, looks fierce on the outside.
The best of both worlds
Honda did a great job designing this car. It's spacious, comfy and a feel good drive. Using the electric battery most of the time is a pleasure and having the backup of the 7 gals of gas comes in handy for longer drives.

Great and poor
This review is for a 2018 Clarity plug in hybrid. The car has a great ride, good size, and the range of about 45 miles on electric covers most of my daily driving. I chose the touring version with the added electronics, in particular the adaptive cruise for stop and go driving and the lane assist. I have a tedious bay area commute and figured those features would make the driving easier. Good in theory, not so good in reality. The electronics are poor and these features do not work well. The low speed cruise slows, slows, then stops abruptly too far behind the car in front. So the driver behind me better be paying attention, and the gap leads to drivers in other lanes continually pulling in front of me. At speeds higher than 45 you can turn on the lane assist feature that will move the steering wheel and steer the car. This feature is a bit dangerous as it is inconsistent. More often than not it will hug the left hand line, right up to the line, not even close to the middle of the lane. But not all the time.... Sometimes it will drive right in the middle for long stretches. Just odd. It will only follow a gentle bend in the highway, otherwise it will cross lanes. You just have to be aware at all times. Different issue, minor but annoying: when on XM radio, the song title and artist info is displayed. But about one time in ten the info does not change when the song changes. This is an either or. If the info changes, it will continue to change. But if the car is being fussy it will not change for the entire trip. Annoying if we are on a long trip and it is acting up. Anyway, I got rid of my 2013 Volt and picked up the Clarity as it had a few key features the volt did not. Big mistake. Oh well. The good news is that I leased it, can give it back in 18 months and pick up something else.

Honda Clarity plug-in hybrids are great
I have only test driven Clarity plug-in hybrids, but they drive beautifully. They are easy to handle and the ride is really smooth. I love the fact that they get over 40 miles on pure electric battery alone. I will buy one as soon as I can find one with low mileage.
Keep it Clarity!
Great basic and efficient transport. Perfect "grocery getter"
