Ranger provides basic transportation & utility

Overall I'm very pleased with my new Ranger XL. I owned a 98 model previously and my experience with that truck was certainly a determining factor in this purchase. Admittedly, the performance of the 2.3L I4 is a bit sluggish; however, what it lacks in pickup it more than makes up for in fuel economy, especially when paired with the stick shift (I've actually averaged 30 mpg a few times). The exterior is more business like than beautiful; which suits my needs. Rugged stout build provides a less than smooth ride but reassuringly capability (hey! it's a work truck!). Excellent reliability so far and as a mechanic I can say; it's all a matter of proper maintenance and not abusing the vehicle.

I must have a rare breed, I have a 2wd, auto, 4.0, XLT extended cab SB. I can never find this style when having to choose. This is my 2nd Ranger, my 1st one was a 1995 SB, 3.0 manual. I would still have it but was tired of shifting. Great dependable truck,. Looks good, simple design, excellent power, just simply put, I love everything about it. I traded in my 95 for an 02 F-150, had that less than a year before I realized I wanted to get back into something smaller and easier to drive.

I bought the Ford Ranger because I couldn't find a Toyota that I liked well enough to replace my Toyota that was totaled. It was more comfortable than the Toyota and was a good ride! A month after buying, the front right brake pads burned up due to a locked caliper. Having bumper to bumper warranty, I took it to the dealer and they replaced the pads and charged me several hundred dollars to replace the caliper and pads. They said the brakes weren't covered unless it was a mechanical failure. Brakes on other side were like new! I felt screwed on the deal. Should have gone to Corporate I guess. At fifty thousand miles, the front wheel bearing assembly had to be replaced. At about one hundred thousand miles, the front timing chain bit the dust and cost me eighteen hundred dollars. I was told how lucky it was because if the back chain went, the engine would have to be pulled and would be very very expensive! Still waiting for that ax to fall. Now have about 150, 000 miles on it and have been pretty happy with it overall. Still looks good! Would probably buy another one.

Transmission Trouble

I have had pretty good luck with the truck until it hit 34000 miles. The tailgate handle broke and the transmission began slipping on the auto. Luckily it is under warranty. The dealership had to rebuild the transmission at a cost to them of $2500. I hope this is not a sign of things to come. My warranty runs out at 36000 miles.
