A manly station wagon
I am a 48 year old male driver who thinks an SUV is overkill. I want a versitile vehicle that can pull a utility trailer for trips to the home improvement store, hold a roof carrier for beach trips, and comfortably take the family of four on a trip and still have room for Grandma. I bought this vehicle out of frustration of not being able to find a mini-van without a DVD-entertainment system but still had stuff like ABS. It has grown on me. Even though it is the base model, this "car" has all the features I wanted, and after driving it for a couple of years, I can say I still like driving it. If I had to replace it right now, I'd probably buy another.
New Freestyle fits the bill
As a new owner, I don't have reliability experience yet. As a previous Escape owner, we needed something with more cargo room (for hockey gear!), AWD, and all the safety features while taking it easy on gas. The Freestyle fit the bill in all respects. It's mammoth inside, has all the safety goodies, full-time AWD, and is a handsome vehicle. Ford did the smart thing by using the Volvo XC90 platform.

Smooth
Third row is hard to access when the optional 2nd row bench is ordered. Car averaging 25 mpg in mixed driving; not bad for 7 passengers with A/C on. Ride is butter smooth, not a squeak or a rattle, CVT transmission very smooth. Car rides very much like a Volvo for quite a bit less money. Great brakes. I would recommend driving the Freestyle before purchasing a competitor's offering. This is the best Ford yet.
Fine overall package.
Coming from a 4-cylinder sedan, I have no concerns about acceleration of 3.0 DuraTec and CVT, nor about engine noise on acceleration. Minimal lean on cornering. Crisp steering & handling. Dash, instruments & controls well laid out. Some panel materials & switches could be more substantial.
my Freestyle
I have driven a Ford pickup for at least 15 years, from a 150 to a Ranger. I have enjoyed all. I recently needed to find a vehicle that was more suited to health issues. I had been thinking of a minivan. My salesman mentioned the Freestyle, but had me test drive both. I was very impressed with the Freestyle. The ease of getting in as well as just the drive itself. I have read many reviews before and after I got it. I have no trouble with u-turns or get up and go. The room inside is almost as good as a pickup, but a pickup is always good to have. I am leasing this vehicle but there's a good possibility I will keep it.
