Used 2017 Ford Escape SE 4dr SUV (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A) Consumer Reviews
2.0 ecoboost Power and reliability
Correction I have the 2.0 liter ecoboost. Bought new now with 120k miles. All I have done to it is oil changes mostly on time. Transmission fluid changed recently (btw dealer quotes 350 popular chain did for 175) entirely fixed some hesitation issue that had come up recently. Brakes checked at the same time and it still doesn't even need pads! (a relative drives only Benz/bmws and lots of $ gone in repairs by same mileage) I have towed 3,500 lbs maybe a little more in 100+ degrees through over 11K elevation some 4k miles no problems. I have always used full synthetic oil either mobil 1 or penzoil platinum at about the recommended 10k mile interval (will do it at 5-7K now). Still on original battery second set of tires. Strong engine, good/fun handling, comfortable. The only complaint is the "autostart" has never worked. It fails in the worst possible way; turns engine off and when the brake is released it does not restart. Fortunately it only happens maybe once per month at most. I get 23 to 28 mpg depending on city/hwy balance. I drive mostly easy but will step on it once in a while as needed and it is very fast if you want it to be. I don't plan on trading in will probably see how long it runs. Will get F150 later this year with ecoboost engine also. UPDATE: The battery needed replacing 2 months ago. Since replaced the autostart feature has worked flawlessly. btw dealer battery quote was 375 + 165 installation. Got for 150 at walmart and installed myself (equivalent AGM grade battery). There are 2 ways to get at battery on youtube. For my toolset the top access was easy. Coming up on 130k miles and running better than ever averaging 26-27 mpg. Update: coolant intrusion at head gasket; 155k miles. 2.0 ecoboost 2017.

Transmission gave out; had to get it rebuilt
Went to look at a used 2017 Ford Escape, and it had an amazing service record no accidents or any problems. I purchased the car in June of 2022 with 95000 miles on it. A month later I drive 6 hours to North Carolina to visit a friend, no problems. On the way back my transmission gave out and it cost $6000 to get it replaced. Apparently it’s a common issue among escapes of that generation. As far as cosmetics of the car goes, the splash guard underneath came loose and we had to refasten them. Also 3 or 4 rattling noises when driving it (windows, plastic pieces ext..), and now most recently there was a leak through the third break light on the back hatch because the weather stripping had already wore off. Stay away from this car!

Run away from this vehicle
The 2017 Escape 2.0 Turbo AWD is my company vehicle. I had 2 Ford Fusion's prior to this with hundreds of thousands of trouble free driving....then I purchased this Escape. Check engine light at 34,000 kms. Coolant leaking into cylinders 1 & 3. New engine was the remedy. Surprisingly Ford had the car back in my hands in 3 weeks. They should have kept it longer. 1st day I had it back it blew an intake hose and lost all turbo boost going up a hill. Wow, does this engine need that turbo, it felt like it had 90hp. Back to dealership and they put hose back on and tighten it properly. The same day the oil light comes on, so I immediately pull over and check the oil.....NONE on the dipstick. Did they forget to put oil in my brand new engine!!!! I call Ford, they tow it back to dealership and 2 days later they call me and say it's fine. 2 days later it rains and I go to use windshield washer spray and nothing happens. I check washer fluid level and it's full. Then I notice fluid leaking from the hood insulation.....they forgot to connect the hoses to the sprayers when they re/re the engine. I connect them myself. 2 weeks later I try merging onto hwy and the engine revs but the car doesn't accelerate at all for about 5 seconds. Service appointment made. By the time of my appointment the transmission has done the same thing a dozen times. Dealership drives it says it is normal and fine. Starts happening more and more....Dealership says it's normal. Finally at a red light, it goes green and car will not move. Yup, new transmission time. Next, A/C compressor failed. Electric power steering failed next and I had to drive it like that for 3 weeks....not like old school power steering....when Electric power steering goes you get an incredible arm workout at ALL speeds. Next, drivers heated seat stopped working. Dealership fixed. Next, driver side front wheel bearing failed. Next, windshield cracked all on its own driving down a private road with no other cars around, no chips or anything just cracked from very edge of windshield UNDER the rubber edging at lower passenger side about 30" across. Dealership said I must have hit something and won't do anything. I showed a glass shop and they said it's a fault and the windshield obviously wasn't hit with anything, Ford still sticks by their story. We aren't quite at 43,000 kms yet. Next event is vehicle won't start after filling tank with fuel. Turns over and over and over until finally it starts and then runs rough and stumbles for about a minute....worse than an old jalopy with a manual choke on a really cold day. In between putting gas in it would start just fine, just every time I put gas in this would happen. EVAP system? Yup. It failed. Been replaced twice so far and needs a third replacement now at 130,000 kms. Now there is no stock and about a 6 month backorder on the parts. Many thousands of owners are effected and Ford won't do a recall. Only vehicle in my life that had the evap system fail at all, let alone 3 times. Also needed a new engine at 83,000 kms.....Ford replaced on their dime again.....and again forgot to replace windshield washer spray hoses. Run away from buying one of these used...RUN!!!!

20,000.00 for 4 years worth of paint
It is now 2021 and the paint is coming off all around the windshield… I did not expect this type of problem even at 70,000 miles. I called Ford after seeing another escape of the exact same year and model at the dealership with paint chipping off in the exact same places. I thought surely this must be a defect and Ford would make it right. WRONG… apparently this is the standard of expectation Ford will stand behind. So if you chose to spend your hard earned money on a fFord… be sure to add an additional 1500.00 for a new paint job after 4 years
