Great car
We purchased this car new in 2000. I do not have one bad word to say about this car. It has been a great little car. No problems what so ever. It is the best value for a car I have ever bought. If all US car maker made their cars of this quality, they would not be in the mess that they now are in. Bravo to General Motors for this car.
Great around-town car
The Prism is a great around town car, but NOT for traveling. I have 260,000 miles on my manual shift and lost 4th gear last September and I am still getting over 34 miles to the gallon. The throwout bearing went bad at about 220,000 miles and we went ahead and rebuilt the motor since it was out and was losing compression. It runs like a new one except for the pesky 4th gear. The interior is very cheap and the door handles break easily. We bought this car new with only 11 miles on it, 8 we put on during the test drive. The car is great for around town and short trips less than 2 hours but uncomfortable on any further distance, especially in the back seat. The suspension is very cheap.

good performer
bought at automall end of 2000 it had been in a rental fleet for the year, only owner, it is an automatic transmission mostly city driving at around 28mpg but very good highway at 65mph only (you can drive 75mph) gets around 35/38 mpg never had one problem with engine or transmission never added oil once my self just had regular changes around twice a year but only drive highway for 6 hours round trip maybe twice a month or so.... have replaced radiator, both front door inner handles, both safety belts for front seats, front breaks, and the usual belts and hoses also had to replace fuel tank as the pressure release valve on the top locked shut and the tank had already started to bulge .... had to replace fuel filter assembly, filter and pump in one assembly, and therefore costly. cassette broke and replaced radio too replaced dash gauge cluster lights too all in all I've had great luck with this car but drive very conservatively in fact my mechanic says I have excessive carbon and should burn it off by accelerating once in a while the engine light is off and only came on for the fuel tank problem and catalytic converter/carbon problem problems I have put off lost one diode in alternator, slight leak in rack-n-pinion steering, motor mounts, car feels a bit loose might be front struts/shocks etc. all in all I've had great luck with this car but bought it one year old and babied it ...... worst feature is the interior as the headliner is falling apart seats wear thin etc.

Not as great as everyone says....
Needed a good car for school, thought the prizm was a good fit and bought one with only 40k miles on it. mpg is amazing on this car, getting 28-30 in the city! However, it consumes oil at an alarming rate (quart every 200m) so the saves equal themselves out. I maintained this car, changed oil and trans fluid but at 70k I can no trust it as reliable. Fuel pump just went out and now I am being told the transmission is going as well, so it's a piece of junk. Interior is VERY poorly made, door handles break, seats uncomfortable, everything is made of cheap plastic. Me personally, I have had enough of American cars and will NEVER put my money in them again... EVER!
Good Ol' reliable!
I've had my prizm for 13 years now. I have no trouble with it eating oil, as others have stated. The inner handles do break, however they are very easily replaced (under 5 minutes each) and if ordered online, very inexpensive (look for toyota corolla). Outer door handles break as well, the front ones aren't horribly difficult to replace. After 13 years, it is now starting to act up and trying to stall if it hasn't been driven in a few days, but after warming up runs just fine. No problem with AC or heater. My cd player did stop working however.
Comfortability
Needs more comfortable seats and locking glove compartment.
Perfect Reliable Car for the Value!
Most people are complaining about Prizm's interior design/quality etc. But thats not true. You are getting what you are paying for. There is not a better car in Prizm's price range. I purchased my prizm when it was 100k, currently it has 180k. It has never stopped working. Power/Weight ratio is perfect for this car 125 horsepower for that small size car is great. (dont expect fast accelerations etc) Currently, I'm looking for a upgrade but I will not sell my prizm, I want to keep it at least 2 or 3 years as a back up.
Lemon of the Market
This is the first car I have owned and I regret buying it. I bought it with 80K miles on it. The AC never worked, and in the summer in Florida it's torture. The check engine light never turns off and the selt belt light never comes on. Muffler fell off the first week I drove it and the car sometimes stalls when I attempt to accelerate (veryy dangerous when pulling out in front of traffic). EATS OIL like crazy. Interior cheaply built & cup holder is in the way of the radio. AC is too expensive to fix. NOT reliable
Not a BAD car but very dissapointing
The fuel economy is awesome on this car but the mechanical flaws equal out the savings. This car ABSOLUTELY CONSUMES OIL at an incredible rate; on the free way, it eats a quart of oil every 150miles (google this issue before you buy). The car stalls EVERY time I start it and when driving, it sometimes fails to accelerate when you apply the gas which is very dangerous when turning into traffic. It is absolutely HORRIBLE in the snow so reconsider it if in a winter climate area. Also, the outside design is beautiful but the interior parts are made of cheap plastic that will break. My door handle broke a year ago and I am STILL looking for a replacement part. I would not recommend this car.
Chevy Prizm at 10 Years
Very good basic transportation. So far there is no mechanical problems at 120000 miles. In general, solid drive train, but questionable quality on other components. Here is a list of problems: (1) Front bumper was not latched right leaving a bulges at p- side (did not try to fix); (2) Trunk leaking water (did not try to fix); (3) Front end linkage squeaks over sp bumps (did not try to fix); (4) Front door lock 1 screw missing the other loos at 50K miles; (5) Seat belt reminder reminds when seat belt on at 50K, and now stopped working; (6) Plastic on door trim separated at 100K; (7) Belt tensioner becomes noisy at 100K. Other than that Engine Tranny still like new.
Quality used car
Bought the car used with 16k on it in 2002. Had previously owned a Geo Prizm with very few problems, which is why I chose this car. It now has 130k on it and has only needed routine maintenance. I haven't had the oil-guzzling probs others mention, & it gets great mileage too. My only complaints are the cup-holder blocks the radio if its holding a drink, and the black rubber trim on the window borders is peeling off. Suppose I'd settle for that any day over major mechanical malfunctions. If they still made this car, I'd absolutely buy it again.
Indestructible
Car is nothing to look at but keeps going. U Get the reliability of a Toyota Corolla without the price.

2000 Checy Prizm Review
Generally a reliable vehicle. But the following problems have surfaced in the past 2 yrs. 1) Check engine light analyzed but repair didn't fix the problem. 2) Seatbelt light flashes sometimes for no reason. 3) A/C stopped working - too expensive to repair. 4) Cruise control works sometimes and sometimes doesn't work. 5) Transmission linkage shifts out of drive into neutral sometimes. Considering this is a Toyota Corolla with a Chevy nameplate, I am rather disappointed in this vehicle which has had good reviews elsewhere.
A car that LOVES to eat oil
I was a little disappointed with this car. It is VERY reliable, had it 2 years, 20+k miles without a single mechanical problem but there are other things that annoy me. It relentlessly eats oil especially if you drive on the freeway. I drive 200 miles on a freeway and find that I am a quart and a half low, it doesn't burn up or leak it just disappears. The car stalls on when you start it up and try to drive right away; no big deal since you should let any car warm up first but I had a couple times where the car almost stalled on my first turn onto a main road with oncoming traffic. It stinks on the snow and the interior design is cheap, the door handle has already feel ff and is hard to fix.
Still Kicking After 200,000
Overall, this car is pretty good. I have over 200,000 miles - 7 years. The check engine light comes on and off. Been doing this for over a year. Mechanic says its a malfunction. Car still runs fine - no problem starting up. A/C broke a year ago - too costly to fix. Door handles are flimsy and broke, but still work. Car uses ALOT of oil. Have to refill it several times between oil changes. Replaced the clutch after 125,000 miles.
2000 chev prizm
To be frank, i really enjoy driving it with respect to reliability, fuel economy and speed. It is cost effective, but the interior design is bogus-very cheap and has really dampen my love for the car. Door handles are very brittle interior materials peel off etc all sort of problems I hate it.
Rock Solid Car
Great car. Could be a little larger inside, but I'm 6'3'' and I still do fit OK. Very smooth, no rattles, no noise, very solid feel. Everything feels mechanically perfect. Everything does what it's supposed to in the manner it's supposed to do it. It's a shame Cheverolet will not continue to sell these.
2000 Prizm
I purchased my Prizm used two weeks ago. I demand a lot from my vehicles and this car has delivered. You get a Corolla engine, heck the whole Corolla, for less money. I just down sized from a 4Runner and I am not dissapointed.
Great Car
I have had my car for almost 2 years now. NO problems at all. EXCELLENT gas mileage. Not the best car for someone with kids. Too small.
great little car
this car is a steal... super-reliable, economical, and zippy with the stick... too bad it has a big Chevy bowtie on the front
Absolutely FUN to drive!
I absolutely LOVE my Chevy Prizm. It is so much fun to drive and manuer in and out of traffic. It's also very reliable. I've had my car for two years and it has given me NO problems at all. And though it is not the most stylish car on the road, it is more economical than it's identical sister, the Toyota Corrolla. In fact, I almost laugh whenever I see someone in a Corrolla because I bet they paid about $2,000 more for their car than I did for mine, yet the cars are IDENTICAL. I would defintely buy this car again.
The best of both worlds
I just bought my Prizm this weekend. The car is a blast to drive. I bought it used w/ 20k mi. Even though it is equipped with an automatic transmission, it quickly picks up to the speed limit. I have to keep my eye on the speedometer from speeding. It has the new 16 valve DOHC vvti engine from Toyota. The gas mileage is very similar to my former car, the Accent. The ride is smooth til you hit some rough roads.
Better than expected
I bought this Chevy using GM MC credits and rebate. $12K out the door. Car is very quiet and comfortable for class. Engine is surprisingly peppy. I got new tires (performance) and the handling improved markedly (still leans in turns, but tracks well). Fuel economy in my work commute is ~34mgp! Fun and quiet car.
I love this car!!!
In the 3 years thatmI have had my Prizm I have had to do nothing more than regular maintaince (You can't say that about many cars!!). That combined with the great gas mileage has saved me a bundle. While the car is a little on the small side it is great for a single person. It is big enough to haul people around when needed and the storage room is great.
Some unexpected problems
This car was purchased new, but always burned engine oil too rapidly, and became quicker over time so I must carry oil with me. The front end alignment pulls to the right and noone can seem to fix it. 3 years ago (summer of 2005) A/C broke. I had to buy a new A/C unit which works so much better than the one the car originally came with. In November 2006 with just over 100,000 miles on the car, the catalytic converter went out - Major Bucks to fix this, and required for DMV renewal. After passing smog, only months later the check engine light is on again meaning I cannot register it this year unless it gets repaired again! Needless to say - time to buy a new car.
Great Steal!!!
Ive had this car for about a month and it's great! It had 56000mi on it when bought it now has 59000 (I drive it alot!) Car does GREAT on gas milage-310mi/tank! Not too impressed with the interior. Floor space in the back could be bigger. Drive is okay but, it doesn't have a very fast pickup. I have to floor the gas to be able to get up to speed and even then it isn't great. The shocks, also, could be better. Other than that, I've had no issues with this car. AC is great, sound system is superb and my two year old loves that he can see out the window! This car reminds me of a small version of a Malibu.
Great Car for Little Money
We've owned our Prizm for five years, now, and it is extremely dependable. With a 5-Speed, it also is surprisingly zippy. This year, we added the performance Michelins from Costco, and it actually handles quite well, too.
Hidden Corolla
Excellent value for a run-about/commuter. It is like other Toyotas, reliable, but hardly inspiring. Going with a 5 speed manual helps, some.
gas saver
this is my second prism. and i would take it again. it is great. only reason i bought it is because it is cheaper than toyota but exactly the same. great performance.
Great Car
I bought this car used 3 moths ago from a dealer in Ohio. I've had no problems with it. i drive it school daily and it's amazing at how many people have this car.
Outstanding Small Car
In the 3.5 years weve had the car its reliability has been outstanding. Only 2 issues. Water was leaking in and pooling in the left rear quarter panel, dealer resealed area and replaced foam drain plug before warranty expired. The second a small bolt was missing, easy replace. If you are looking for a quality used small car, this is it. You get Toyota reliability at a Chevy price. Average about 30 MPG driving in mixed conditions. Could expect 35+ with more highway miles. Currently has 51,000 miles.
My car sucks
I have had my prizm for just over a year and I will NEVER buy another car like it again...it eats oil like crazy, the inner door handle on drivers side is broke, the clear coat on the hood has peeled off, and it does the same as most of the other reviews, it hesitates when you pull out(VERY DANGEROUS) my fuel pump just went out today...can't wait to see whats next!!!!
MIXMIXMAN
very good cheap car runs very well no problems very good on gas the crazy thing is that if you drive 65-70 on the highway get about 29/30/mpg go 75- 80 and it get 37/39mpg go figure ha ha
Cheap, Fun, Reliable!
We researched a lot of cars before buying this one seven months ago and it really paid off. We wanted a reliable used car that we could keep for a long time, so the low price combined with Toyota reliablility appealed. The fuel economy and relativly good safety rating are nice, too. Pretty comfortable, and yes, it's fun to drive!
Great reliable car
IT gets good mileage and is very dependable. I've not had to do anything but regular maintenance in the past 4 years. My only complaint is that they put the cup holders in front of the cd, which makes getting cds in/out is a hassle and sometimes when you try to grab your drink you stop the cd or change the channel on the radio and stuff like that.
Too bad they don't make 'em anymore
This is a great small car. It features good design, fine build quality, spunky performance w/ 5 speed, great mileage and reliability, plus decent space and comfort. Handling is good and improves remarkably when you get rid of the OEM tires and put on a set of good ones.
Highly Reliable
Great Vehicle. It has been very reliable with no major problems reported. Great gas mileage and dependability. For someone who is 5' 6", this is perfect for me. Mostly City driving, occasional highway. For a compact car, it appears to have more room than you think.
Great car for the money
I needed a car that was fuel efficient, low maintenance, and most importantly, reliable. After almost 2 years of ownership my Prizm has proven to be all three things! I was initially a little concerned because the mileage was a little high when I bought it (100k), but I'm at 114K and can say I've never experienced any problems with this car. It is a great value for the money.
Immortal!!!
This is far and away the most reliable used car I have ever owned, and I have owned over 50 used cars. I worked as a driver for over 30 years. Only the 2001 Toyota Corolla equals it, and I believe they are actually identical. Nearly everything on this car seems to be made by Toyota.

So far dependable transportation
As stated by a few reviews, door handles are brittle, it does consume oil, no leaking. Automatic transmission, base model, no frills no electric windows after market stereo. Bought in 2017 with 110,000 miles now I'm at 145,000. Do not get mileage stated, 24 average per tank. Daily summer driver, car is very light and in rain, snow or high winds.....it is a slider.it is a Toyota Corolla, with Chevy badging it seems. Toyota motor, bought old and used bit had Toyota floor mats. It drives well at 55 mph, which I do seldom, a lite shaky at 55 to 70, over 70 it seems better, and actually has a good kickk in at 80, (not recommended). 34 mile daily work trip only, 30 are highway miles, have only dr a few trips in excessog100 miles but I trust it for longer trips, does need a tuneup and alignment basic stuff but hat I drive it is a good little car. I'm 6-2 so it is a head banger and a little tight, but it is the basic of the basic car, very little rust, white paint faded bit no clear coat so.......paid 2 grand have wore out front tires changed pcv
