Goldilocks Size, Gold Bullion Price
Replaced our 325iT because the new "Sportwagons" only came in AWD - out of our price range, heavy, and lower performance. A base model is affordable by BMW standards, but to get the rear-view camera, we had to buy the costly nav and "driver assist" packages. (This may not be true with the new X1 that's on the Mini chassis.) The best interior (IMO) is the extra cost Terra/Petrol leather (Milk chocolate with white/blue piping) which only came with the extra cost XLine Package that included 18 inch lower profile (harsher riding and more expensive to replace) tires. Not really for a large family of large people, but for our purposes, occasionally carrying four normal size adults, it's perfect. All that said, we stretched our budget for a well optioned car with a sticker of $49,500 and we love it. Downside: It came with run-flat tires, unrepairable, harder-riding and expensive to replace. The newer X1s can be had with a limited-service spare and non-run-flat tires.

Sport Hatchback that BMW doen't technically make
I know that everyone is jumping in the small crossover SUV pool but the X-1 (in my opinion) doesn't really strike me as an SUV. What it strikes me as is a 3 Series of 2 generations ago, re-imagined as a sport hatchback. I've had mine for a couple months and I really couldn't be happier with my decision. Mine is loaded: Ultimate package, X-Line package, Adaptive Xenon Lighting package, Cold-weather package, etc. but I bought it as a dealer demo with 6,800 miles on it so it was about $8,000 or so below sticker. We are empty-nesters and my wife has a Ford Explorer so I really could have gotten by with a smaller sport sedan or even a coupe (I test drove both). However, I am a cyclist and backpacker so having a bit more utility in the vehicle I drive every day kind of put the X-1 over the top for me. Plus the price was lower than a 3 series or a 228i AND I really don't feel like I gave up much in the way of driving dynamics. With 240hp and 260 lb/ft of torque, there is simply gobs of power on tap in this 3,500 lb car. I got the rwd version (we don't get much snow if any) so it handles like a true German sports sedan. It's shorter (nose-to-tail), narrower and lighter than the 3 Series wagon and it's like 9 inches shorter (in height) than the X3 so it really is more of a hatchback than a wagon or SUV. I also like that it has 7" of ground clearance: not enough to introduce too much lean in the corners, but enough to not have to worry about hitting curbs and parking barriers in parking lots. It's a very nice touring car on your favorite 2 lane hwy (or even the interstate) and it scoots around town or back roads as zippy as you want to. It has plenty of headroom in front and back. Negatives? Leg room in the back is a bit tight for adults, only 2 will comfortably ride in the back (due to the transmission tunnel), and there's a bit too much wind and road noise on the interstate for a BMW (in my opinion--having owned BMWs before). All of that I can live with because the virtues of this car far outweigh the negatives.

Awesome Ride
I got this car trading in a 2013 Jetta Sportwagen TDI polluter and could not be happier, even though I took a beating on the trade in value, thanks to VW's fraudulent practices. We'll see if they ever make it right, but, I'm over it. This BMW is an incredible machine. It feels solid, looks fantastic outside, clean and elegant inside with wood trim and, most important, it is really, really fun to drive -- super responsive with a kick that will throw your head back in fourth gear, great acceleration from a dead stop, awesome handling, sweet engine sounds, just a beautiful little beast. I've got a C7 Corvette, manual with sports package and this thing compares favorably in terms of driving dynamics. I mean, driving to work every morning is a treat, not a chore. My particular x1 is a loaded M Sport 35i -- don't think there's anything it hasn't got. It's real comfortable inside -- I'm 6'1" and find the front seat roomy. The controls are easy to use and the infotainment system I like much better than the one on the Corvette -- shorter learning curve, more intuitive. I have no idea what the mileage is and don't care, really. Whatever they say it is, I'm sure mine is much less because of the way I drive. I did try the eco-boost thing and it does improve mileage -- there's a little readout that tell you how much, but, when it's on, the car doesn't drive like a BMW. I think it's good for long highway trips when you're just going along at the speed limit for hours, but when you're actually driving the car, forget it. You don't buy a car like this to save on gas. For that, get a Prius. So, bottom line, I am totally sold on this car. I hate the fact that, for 2016, BMW ruined it, making it front wheel drive and sticking you with the smaller engine and the eight speed transmission, but, hey, I got the sweet spot, seems like and I will keep this car for a very long time. Update 8/3/17 Everything above is still true. I'm always thinking about cars, but there is just no way I could sell this BMW. I took it for a road trip earlier this year and it was great on a long drive, comfortable and, for me, the absolutely perfect size. Looks like I'm stuck with it. By the way, these cars are very hard to find. I friend of mine wants one just like it and we looked regionally and, tricked out like mine, didn't find one. Update 2/3/18 Same old story. I'm buying an extended warranty to 100K on this baby. I keep looking at stuff and don't see anything that matches it, so, since I've only got a two car garage, when I get to the place where I just can't resist the new car itch any longer, the C7 will have to go. I love it, but I love this BMR more. On the VW, I did finally get a few K from them. I still took a loss and will never even look at a VW again, but something is better than nothing, as the say. Update 8/4/18 No changes except for new tires. Love this car. Update 2/6/20 Best care I've ever owned. Extended warranty in place. Service plan in place. Good to go for a long, long time. I keep getting offers from the dealership telling me what a deal i could get on a new one, trading this guy in. Are you kidding? I wouldn't swap a 2015 x1 for a 2019 x1 even up.

Great AWD wagon
I love my 2015 X1, and more so after driving a 2016. The 2015 X1 has a unique style and look that maintained classic BMW driver focused interior and handling. The Valencia orange makes the curves on the exterior pop. She handles beautifully and has been very dependable. The new X1 interior drives me nuts! It's cheesy! The 2015 is sleek and serious compared to the weird seat and dash configuration in the newer models. The 2015 knows what it's about and the 2016 is confused by trying to satisfy all the criticisms of the ignorant American car critics!

fun exciting peppy little cuv - very pleased.
Very cool good looking high build quality vehicle with peppy engine and precise steering with good road feel but still highly comfortable and luxurious. If you are not looking for a big vehicle, then this is definitely the one to get since it is more practical than a sedan like 3-series, but with all its fun. It is not cheap as some people suggest - if you add up all the options that are standard on 3-series, it gets more expensive than a 3-series. So in that sense it is better since the options are just that - optional.
Drives Like A BMW.... Sporty and Agile
Bought it as a CPO. One year used. Love everything about it and as it racks up the mileage, it only gets better. Mileage is excellent and it will run just as well on Mid-Grade gas. Mine has no Navigation package so it doesn't have a backup camera. Kind of disappointing considering low end VW and Chevy's have it. But actually don't miss it at all. It's quick. My 0-60 is a nick under 5 seconds according to the track and top end is a nick over 130. Surprising figures considering the book stats, but several dealers have said it's not uncommon. An Amazon roof rack solved any hauling issues. It's compact and easy to drive and park. Dealership service? The one I got it from was/is awful, as are the other two in my area. Pushy, sales oriented and the sheer fact that I have begged and asked for a recommended service interval guide and repeatedly told "the information system will tell you when things are due." Interesting that I was in at 49,500 miles for wind noise (that was later fixed for free by Safelite) and nothing was mentioned about the spark plugs, brake fluid, coolant, cabin filter, brakes and several other "recommended" services but when the oil change was due at 50,600 miles less than a month later I was told "If you would have had us do it before 50,000 miles it would have been free." They wouldn't do the oil change for free at 49500 because it was more than 1000 miles from due and I figured since I was paying for it would wait a couple months and push it. When asked about why I wasn't informed.... "the light wasn't on." I asked what light? Never did see the light BTW. To top it off, NTB said the brakes had at least another 50,0000 miles left. Spark plugs were $200, brake fluid and coolant $200 and cabin filter was OK. The dealer was hitting me at $3600 or so. And for the wind noise, it was the cowl at the bottom of the windshield. They wanted to charge me $666 for it. Took it to Safelite because they did me right on my last car and they found the part for $55 at the nearby BMW place and put it on for free because I bought wiper blades from them. Oh yeah.... the dealer was the one that quoted me the $666. Five minutes labor for over $600? But overall? Love it and would buy the next one CPO.... with a few more miles on it and get a repair contract. They charge for transferring the new car warranty over... so why buy a newer one? Buy a couple years old... get the maintenance package for the same price as the transfer fee. I paid $950 and only got 2 free oil changes. Don't buy new.... the depreciation on these things is incredible. Update at 3 years in. Still love it. 88K on the odometer. Never owned a car this long and am hoping to drive the wheels off this one. Still comfortable. Still economical. Still looks good. Dealership still sucks but found a local mechanic who is awesome.

Another fun BMW
This car is great to drive! Great acceleration, great handling. Easy to get in and out of. Does everything well. My only disappointments are minor. For the amount paid for this vehicle, it's surprising that it did not come with power seats. The other thing that I notice is that the longer I have the vehicle, the worse my gas mileage gets. Since I have had no mechanical issues with the car, I don't know what would affect the gas mileage. I would expect gas mileage to get better over time, not worse (that' been my experience with my other BMW's - 2 3 series, 2 5 series. Overall, I would definitely recommend this vehicle.

quick and nimble with no cost maintenance. sign me up.
i have now 13k miles on my X1. i got the 4 cylinder but it is very quick with 250lb torque. steering is precise and after 13k miles there is no problem and tires and brakes are fine. person wrote brakes gave out after 1,000 miles? he must be a cadillac dealer. there is no way they give out and if they did BMW replaces them. the start stop feature saves gas but it's optional to use. i turn it off mostly so i can have more fun but it is optional, so it's not an issue. the back seat is small. the cargo is small. it is not an SUV. it's a cross over.
Underwhelmed....ho...hum.
Sure, its got sporty get-up-and-go and handling, but that is where the over-achievement ends. Otherwise, its just "OK" as far as luxury brand vehicles go. A quick list of the less-than-optimal "features": -windows VERY quick to fog up when heat is on -limited back-seat leg-room -HD radio degraded within 1st year -initially very quiet and within 6 months became significantly louder -computer system frequently alerting (then not alerting) that all 4 tires were either low and/or flat and then not alerting on this -computer system frequently alerting that radiator fluid was needed (within months of purchasing car and after adding fluid) and then not alerting on this

Should have been more from BMW
After 30,000 miles in good and bad weather, I would say I'm satisfied but not amazed with the X1. This SAV is responsive and handles well. I was impressed with the stability in snow and ice. My disappointment is mostly with the base bluetooth interface. Old technology and not what should be standard on a premium vehicle. Like the transmission, hate the shifter. Is it a great value? Is it the best vehicle of its type? Perhaps not. It is my 5th BMW and 2nd currently owned. (Z4) something keeps bringing me back. If not the ultimate driving machine, it's a drivers vehicle and you don't get that from a subaru. Enough said. Update: 24,000 miles, MPG is avg24. On highway not any better. Gear selector is terrible and for this price point the Bluetooth should be much better. Overall, it's okay just not great. Least inspired of the 5 BMWs I've owned. In the end, this incarnation of the X1 wasn’t satisfying at all. It was quickly replaced by a completely revamped model. BMW still likes to keep vehicles way too spartan and charge heavily for what comes standard in other makes. This version of the X1 just didn’t cut it.

x1 x35i satisfaction
Turbo six is super quick, handles at at least 90% of the capabilities of 235Xi coupe, which is saying alot. Have a 2006 X3 based of the E90 3 series frame, and love the handling of the vehicle, at 150,000 miles needed to start looking for an eventual replacment. Found the X1 is on the same frame, and roughly the same size on the inside and outas the orginal model X3, so that was the answer. Found low milage X1s with the turbo six sells at around 22,000. Test drove one, sold the coupe and bought the X1, traded in a few percentage points of handling for alot more utility. I live on top of a mountain with a long super twisty road, but only those good drivers with known high performance rides, can keep up with that X1 maybe. I do my own mechanic work on the BMWs, Over the years have rebuilt some stuff on that 12 year old X3: wheel bearings, front suspension, coil spring/shocks, rear brakes, AC compressor, drive shaft center bearing, two drive axles, front drive shaft. But that old X3 is tight as new. Expect the same from the X1 over time.

I love our X1 xdrive 28i !!
This car exudes solid build quality, and I have confidence in the engine reliability. I can tell when a car is going to last a while... and this one gives me the same confidence our long-llived CX-5 does. The X1 is fast when you want it to be. And, economical when your foot isn’t into the throttle. Handling is excellent, and I want my wife to take it to the track (it’s her car). Snow is no problem- we put Blizzaks on it and nothing stops it (except for snow depth maybe. Storage is at a premium, but I like smaller cars. We have a rooftop box which really helps for trips. I think the back seat is roomy, not sure why they said it in the review.

The vehicle gets incredible gas mileage. I met a guy that said he was getting 37 on the open road. I regularly get 34mpg which is fantastic. Moved to SoCal and gas mileage around town is about 28, 29, still good not like the open road, lots of stop/start. Still second best vehicle I've ever owned.

Sun Roof
I bought this car last year and don't use the sun roof that often but last week I started using it a couple times and all off a sudden the fabric peeled off! I'm very surprised that it came off so easily. This is going to be an expensive fix which should have never happened in the first place. I love my car but, this was very disheartening. If it wasn't for that I'd give it a 4/ 5 if it had a back up camera and bluetooth or a better wat to listen to music on my phone.

Lives up to it’s vibe
It truly is the ultimate driving machine. That is the number one thing that hits and soothes you behind the wheel. No other car drives or feels like this car does. It does not matter if you want the performance or the pure luxury. It delivers both.
Overall I like it very much.
Update after 16 months of ownership:Recently found “service engine soon” light is on and OBD code P0578 which is thermostat heater circuits open, had it replaced last Monday at local mechanic in Bronx,NY. Part costs for $67 and labor $150. Total after tax and tips 260 dollar for a 61K miles SAV(I bought it when it’s 41K). It’s not bad at all, I am looking forward of the future companion with my bimmer. Updated after one year ownership: I still love this vehicle even though you offer the 2016 version for exchange I would take the 2015 version again. The only change I would have is replace the run flat tire, they are very expensive ($280 each from my experience of fixing a punch on the tire). Also, it doesn’t have all the new technology such as ACC, lane keeping and ventilated seat which I definitely would like to have in the summer. The cabin noise is under control, ride is comfortable and acceleration is confident. It’s a fabulous daily sav for me. Trade in my civic for better power commute vehicle. I am single and dating a lady in Boston so in most of scenario I am the only person who driving this Bimmer. It’s 3” shorter than my civic but taller and wider. The steering is firm at low speed I guess that what you would expect from a BMW, acceleration is also sound more than enough to passing at 60. It does have bit road noise but no as bad as my civic. Interior is beautiful,

X1 a poor man's Macan S
We needed to replace our car in the mountains for our vacation home and decided on the BMW X1 SAV. This is our 1st BMW (currently I drive a Porsche 997 C2 Cab and my wife drives a Porsche Cayenne S at our main home) and initially after test driving liked it (but I was leaning toward a Volvo V60 Cross Country...but was unable to work out the deal that I wanted) but after driving it for 2 weeks I more than like it! Amazing performance (for a turbo 4) and great gas mileage. Handling is superb....not my 911 type of handling...as it is not a sports car, but for what it is and for it's price tag superb. The best I have driven up to the Macan (which is in a totally different category all together!). There are a few downsides which are lack of storage inside the vehicle (ours is a 2015 and I have been told that it has been somewhat rectified with the 2016 year model) and...maybe just 1 downside then! Very happy so far.

Sports car delightful driving in an SUV!
Bought the base X1 sdrive for the road mileage...and to my surprise, I find that I am driving the X1 more than the 540i...it is a comfortable, sporty SUV that handles almost like the 3 series sedans I have owned...perfect for my rental real estate business...chic enough to haul clients and SUV enough to haul rental supplies.

A Sports Car Cleverly Disguised as an SUV
This car is a lot of fun to drive. It accelerates faster than my Porsche 911S and handles about as well. I live in Colorado and I have no reservations about driving this car in the mountains in winter. Very few cars pass me going uphill on some of the steepest grades and it handles mountain switchbacks beautifully. It is so comfortable for the driver (I'm 6'1") and passenger on long road trips, although the back seat can be a little cramped for people over 6'. Reliability is great. One thing I do not like is there is no spare tire and I have to rely on my run-flat tires. My wife finds only one cup conventional holder a little inconvenient. The low tire pressure alarms are very sensitive, which causes problems with our temperature extremes. None of these inconveniences takes away from the enjoyment of driving this car, however. I thought about upgrading to a newer X1, but I'm not willing to give up my 6-cylinder engine.
My BMW X1 Experience
I absolutely love my BMW X1..... I was very blessed to get it with only 48000 miles on it in April the 2023.... It was in top notch mint condition. It drives and handles amazingly... Smallest SUV I've ever own. But I feel so safe driving it.

The value of this car for the price paid is great. I absolutely love the sunroof, leather seats and heated front and passenger seat. The gas mileage is great for this fun car. I am getting average of 25.7 mpg. I rarely drive on highways because my work is close by and I take side roads.

Not happy
Number of things that bother me. 1. front door handles will pinch the fire out of your fingers if you are not careful. 2. after 600 miles the car only gets 18.2 mpg in Dallas traffic. 8 miles below what they say it should get. 3. not much of a pickup 4. wheel base porpoises a lot. UPDATE ON 3/8/2016 - MPG is still crappy for this type of vehicle , plus what is reported by BMW. Front door handles are poorly designed. Will really pinch you, if not careful. Now have about 1700 miles on automobile. Would not buy one again. Just had interesting experience on this vehicle on 6/25/16. Had nail in left rear tire, and it could not repaired. Found out that there are 3 run flat tires which cannot be repaired and you have to buy a new one. The BMW X1 uses Pirelli, and that is one of the 3. Be sure, before you buy, to find if your run flats can be repaired. Very important. Update on 6/28/17 - still not happy with gas mileage, as advertised. yesterday, it 17.2 for a tank of gasoline.

My $600 phone is easy to use $39,000 car is not
The car handles well and really shines on a 2 lane highway. Lags between 0-5 mph which is mildly annoying but otherwise is OK. I like the gas mileage and it is comfortable in the driver's seat. The problems: 1. Navigation - slow to acquire satellites and then 5 minutes later will alter your route based on traffic, this is sometimes too late to take a better route. My phone is much better. Also, if you decide to go a different route the system will keep trying to reroute you back to the original rather than recalculating. Once I went 70 miles and passed into the upper in Michigan before it recalculated. I was recently sent a notice that I could upgrade to current maps for $59 annually. This is pretty funny. 2. The bluetooth phone works OK, but it takes a minute or two to reload the phonebook from my phone each time. Why? Again my phone is better. At least the car bluetooth will pick up the call after I have made it on my phone. 3. Hands free control - you can speak controls but you have to know the exact sequence of words, for example for an address, you can't easily search for anything else, this is not really useful. Bottom line is that BMW should hire some Samsung or Apple engineers. Not sure I would buy again but would consider if they caught up with Ford on technology front. Update: clear coat pealing off.

Great car in the snow
Handles amazing and good in snow. Very fast car but also great for families.
Replaced our 2016 X1 with a low mile 2015 X1
My Mother In Law passed this year and we bought her 2015 fully loaded X1. The little old lady had only put on 30 K miles. We sold our 2016 BMW X1 back to the dealer we bought it with 115 K miles so got the low miles 2015 at a good price. It is wonderful and very fun to drive . My MIL bragged it up all the time. The 2015 is a very small SUV more like a station wagon. Very agile and plenty fast. The ride is sporty, you feel the road, but the 2015 is quieter than our 2016 was perhaps from the lower profile. It is a sports car hiding as a small SUV. We love it. Once you go Beemer you can't go back.

Big Catch
Price, condition was great!
A lot of speed, but very little comfort
I'm a single female and for me the car is barely suitable. It is very small inside with no cargo room. I am average size and the front seats are hard and uncomfortable despite the electric seats. Additionally, the back seats have no leg room whatsoever. Living in Tucson I admit is hard on any car, however, forget comfort all together if there is someone over 5'8" riding along with you! My demise was when the inside molding around the doors, the floorboards and dash board started falling off. The inner molding is cheap with only little plastic tabs to keep them all in place. The paint job is peeling off in big chunks especially around the fog lights and front end. This was my 1st BMW and really, I am very disappointed with it. The acceleration is great and handling on the highway is better than amy car I have ever driven. Really, I can't think of anything else I like about it. The worst part is that I paid 13,500 for the car in 2022 and its current value is only 4000. I hope this helps you, and keeps you from buying a 2015 BMW x1 28i Hardly a crossover SUV.
