Sometimes less is more. The 2025 BMW M2 embodies that philosophy, distilling the best of its larger, two-door M4 counterpart into a smaller, livelier shape. About 9 inches shorter than the M4, the M2 uses its smaller footprint to good effect. This is a raucous sport coupe that's impressively agile and responsive in tight turns. Based on the 2 Series coupe, the M2 also gets the requisite M division upgrades, such as wider fenders, more powerful brakes, grippier tires, sport front seats and more. This year is also notable for the M2 because it no longer has a power deficit compared to the M4.

Edmunds spotlight: Pint-size power upgrade

For 2025, the M2 gets 20 more horsepower for a total of 473 hp. That's a noticeable boost for any car, but for the M2 it's also symbolic. It's the same power available in the larger M4 coupe (and M3 sedan), making the smaller Bimmer a legitimate M4 Junior for considerably less money. BMW says the extra power shaves 0.1 second from the M2's zero-to-60-mph time, now down to 4.1 seconds with the manual transmission or 3.9 seconds with the automatic. It's the most visible way BMW has narrowed the gap in its M lineup for 2025, but not the only. The M2 also gets BMW's updated infotainment system, iDrive 8.5, which offers more voice control over certain features but also integrates climate controls into the touchscreen — a solution we typically find more annoying than enhancing.

Competitors to consider

Check out the Ford Mustang Dark Horse. It doesn't have the same brand cachet as the M2, but it's otherwise pretty similar in performance and mission. We also think highly of the Audi RS 3 and Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing. They also have comparable horsepower and performance, and their sedan body styles help them be more usable for family duty. Other options include the Chevrolet Corvette, Toyota GR Supra, or the larger and more expensive M4.

How does the BMW M2 drive? In our testing, an M2 with the eight-speed automatic transmission needed 3.9 seconds to hit 60 mph while a car with the six-speed manual gearbox took 4.3 seconds. The two cars' 0-30 mph times were identical, proving it's at higher speeds where the quick-shifting M2 proves its mettle. On the skidpad, we saw an incredible 1.07 g, and on the road, BMW's smallest M car feels light and planted, changing direction quickly and predictably. It's a ton of fun. If given the choice, we'd pick the manual car — it's simply more engaging, and its automatic rev-matching tech and light, easy-to-modulate clutch mean it isn't a chore to drive in heavy traffic or day-to-day.

The M2's limits are accessible to drivers of all skill levels — high praise for something so quick. It also adds a layer of refinement to the M2 formula that was missing in the previous-generation M2. It rides relatively smoothly over bumps, and the suspension absorbs many road imperfections to ensure the interior remains a quiet and refined place.

Comfort

How comfortable is the BMW M2? Sports cars are always going to make compromises in comfort, and the M2 is no different. Because of its low ride height, the M2 requires a bit of effort to get in and out of. It's even worse if you pick the sport bucket seats; their thick side bolsters further hamper your ability to get in and out of the vehicle gracefully. The rear seating is also pretty cramped. The M2's climate control works well, but the screen-based interface can be distracting to use while driving, and there's a learning curve where there shouldn't be one. That said, the M2's screens look great and display important information (like tire temperature and oil pressure) that's easy to read.

It's also relatively quiet inside because of how well the M2 is bolted together — the materials never squeak or rattle. Quirks aside, the M2 strikes a nice balance between sport and comfort.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The M2 utilizes the same touchscreen-centric infotainment system found in most other new BMW models. The menus are deep and have a learning curve, but the screen reacts quickly to your touch and looks great thanks to deep blacks and bright colors. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both connect wirelessly and work near faultlessly to integrate your smartphone; you can even use your phone as a key. BMW offers USB ports in both rows, as well as wireless charging.

While it might still feel weird to talk to your car, BMW's voice commands work well enough that you'll want to use it. It can adjust the temperature, turn the head-up display on and off, and more. Given how many of these functions are buried in a menu, this is a welcome feature.

How’s storage and cargo? The M2 is a relatively small car, but you still get up to 13.8 cubic feet of trunk space. It's enough for a grocery haul or luggage for a weekend getaway. Plus, the rear seats fold down to give you more room for bigger cargo items, which is a nice touch. Interior storage isn't so great, however. The cupholders are placed in front of the gear shifter, so if you have a manual transmission, you're never going to want to use them since your knuckles will hit whatever's in there as you go for a gear change. This isn't a problem with the automatic transmission, however. The door pockets are also quite small.

Is the BMW M2 a good value? Our M2 was loaded with options such as fancy paint, sport bucket front seats and a carbon-fiber roof. It's nice that BMW offers these features but they quickly boost the price, and you don't really need them to enjoy the car. An M2 with just a few options is by far the best value. When you factor in how well built it is and how much more well rounded a car it has become, the M2 comes off as a very well-priced performance machine.

Warranty coverage is average for the class. Buyers get basic and drivetrain coverage for four years/50,000 miles. BMW also throws in three years/36,000 miles of free maintenance.

How’s the fuel economy? Regardless of transmission, the EPA says you should expect to see the same fuel economy from a BMW M2: 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined. We only managed around 17 mpg with either transmission. Then again, considering how fun this car is to drive, a few mpgs off the EPA's estimates are an appropriate trade-off. This one's about smiles per gallon, not miles per gallon.

If you want something small, fun and brilliant to drive (and you aren't affected by how a car looks), the M2 hits all the right notes. It's the definition of fun in 2025, and as we slowly lose out on manual gearboxes, we can't applaud BMW enough for keeping them alive. Moreover, the M2 is a rare bird, and it will only get more special with time. In terms of cars that make you feel alive and urge you to truly get out and drive, this thing is a 10 out of 10.

I have had the honor of owning my G87 M2 for several months. Overall it is a great sports car that can be used by most for daily life all while having a ton of fun. Kids fit in the back just fine, medium to large adults not so much. I love the new interior even if it took a few weeks to get comfortable with the tech and lack of buttons.
