'99 BMW 328i Review
After owning a sport packaged 5 spd 328i for more than three years now, I believe I can offer an experienced rating of this vehicle. Having spent 39K and change not including taxes on a series that started out at 27K I had high (and justified) expectations. All were met. A sport packaged 328i 5 spd delivers all the performance, fun, and practicality anyone could want from a "sedan". The car looked good, had no build quality issues, and only three minor recalls that were handled quickly. I'm now waiting for an M3 that I've just ordered, and I know I will enjoy the new car very much, but even this new coupe will not provide the user friendly broad range of qualities that the 328
Who Knew???
Tiring of my '93 MX-6 LS with all the trimmings, most of which no longer worked, I knew I wanted a luxury/sport thing. Test drove the 328i with the sport package and knew I had to have the car. I have NEVER been as awed by the performance of a vehicle as I was by this. My jaw hurt for days from smiling too much...

Buy certified cars
I purchased a certified manual 5-speed 1999-328i with 30,000 miles, in Jan 2002. Dealer installed new brakes pads and rotors, gave me 4 winter tires/rims/wheel covers, CD changer, refurbished 17" alloy wheels, paid 2/3 of the bill on new 17" Bridgestone Potenza S-03 performance tires, and warranty until April 2005/80,000 miles. The car had amazing handling even with the 16" michelin alpin winter tires. Now that I installed the 17" alloy wheels with S-03 performance tires, I can take the car on a twisty road at speeds 70-90 mph in complete confidence. I have been driving japanese cars for 20 years, and never got this enthusiastic about a car.
Fun to drive, but...
Feels as solid as a tank. Could be quicker but fun nonetheless. Handles as if on rails. The controls are in all of the right places. Looks to kill. Perfect car, but it's an absolute money pit to own. Spent $6000 on repair bills including water pump, computer ($2000), rear-end bushings, 3 window actuators ($375/each) and other misc. parts. Dealer wanted to do even more repairs totaling $4000 (replacing radiator and expansion tank was $2500!). Walk away uless it comes with a very good extended warranty.
Best for the money, most value
This car is a workhorse/tank. It offers the most performance, stability and safety unlike any other car. Acceleration is a dream while gas mileage is at 28mpg. And I shift at 5,000 rpm. I have only been serviced for oil changes. There is little back-end maintenance.
