I'm still here, and driving my beautiful '99, even though it has cost me about $900 this year for two problems that should not have happened within the 37K miles that I've driven it. Today's NY Times "Escapes" section has an article about Pontiac Aztek (UGGGGLYYYYY) owners who have similar complaints. The following is an excerpt: "Should the calamity come to pass, Aztek owners will at least find themselves in good ... Read More
So, here is the situation. I have a 99 MTX Cougar (love it). However, I commute about 3 hours a day in heavy traffic, have tendinitis, and the shifting is killing me. As a result, I have been looking at new cars. Yesterday, I was at the Mercury dealer, having my winter rim/tires put on, and I saw a 2001 ATX Cougar with 9,000 miles that they had just brought in ... I'm the owner of a 2001 Cougar and love the car except after the car warms up and you start driving it, it feels almost like the clutch is slipping in 1st and 2nd gears but the other gears work fine. I took it back to mercury to have them check it out and they drove it around for a little while (wasting about a quarter tank of gas) and told ... Read More
wildcat, your post is good to see but also sad. If the 2001 cat is a good car, why is Mercury stopping it just when it's fixed? Arrgh!
Howdie folks, CSG'ers and X-CSG'ers! Sorry for not posting since ... let's see ... November of last year! Geez that was way too long. I do hear you though about being a little bitter toward Mercury for dissing all of us like that. I put the form letter from Mercury in my Cougar Wall of shame experiences! It's right next to all the reasons I will never buy another Mercury product. ... Read More
Well said Bubba. As I look around at the new cars, yuk, Then I look in my garage and I see a nice looking car that was reasonable. I wonder what happened. Oh-well! I guess Mercury deserves an award for the screw-up of the decade. Only have 15K on our kitty, but no problems. Except for a chip in the front end. (Soon to be fixed) Just thinking about getting her ... Read More
Welcome abourd Aussy. Glad to hear of your purchase and that you haven't had any problems. I haven't had any problems with my 2001 C2, so I'm assuming most of the problems are just related to the first 2 years of the Cougar and that Mercury worked out the kinks by the time my 2001 and you 2002 were produced. I still love my car and still get tons of comments ... Read More
I personally think the sport seats are better than the regular seats. In my opinion they are much better bolstered(ie: hold you in the seat on hard fast turns better) and I also like the having the adjustable headrest. I would get the power lumbar support if you intend to drive long distances in your Cougar. I have it on my 2001 and it really helps out on long drives. I've ... Read More
Just read the review of Edmund's 2001-2002 Sport Coupe Comparison Test. When I clicked on last place I knew the Cougar would be last (even though I secretly hoped it would be higher) One of the worst things about the article is that I have been looking for a review on the Cougar to see how it compared to the latest comptetion. It was really sad to see the same things ... Read More
It is odd that they would have removed ABS as a standard feature on the V6's. I recently read an article about the new 2001-2002 which mentioned something about ABS not being standard. In 1998 when I bought my 1999 Cougar, ABS was standard with the V6 because of the added weight and HP. I got the Manual Transmission because I love to "row my own" and I also got the ... Read More
All -- I have been quite remiss since last summer in keeping up with the goings-on of the CSG. I was out of commission with a move from Baltimore to Jacksonville. Regardless, the following was sent to me by my father. It is a write-up of CougarFest 2001 in FoMoCo's employee newsletter... Cougar Fest Brings Mercury Owners to Dearborn/Flat Rock By Jon Hewett DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 1, 2001 (FCN) -- They ... Read More
I have to admit, the Alero with the full package is a sweet looking car, and I think I like their red better then Mercury's... I considered an Alero before I got my 2001 Cougar just last month. You can't go wrong with that warranty either.. did you get the 6 years, 60k miles?
By this time, the locals had come to investigate the noise they had heard, and were calling down the bank "Are you all right down there?" I replied, "Yea, I'm OK!" And I actually meant it! My Cougar protected me all through the disaster, and I climbed the creek bank in pretty good order. I was out of sorts from the blow to my head, and I don't want to go ... Read More
burnsmr4: I agree with Fish8. You should either go to your local dealership or register your car on the Mercury web site to get the latest recall data. I don't mean to shrug your request off, but I might not be able to acquire all the recall notices that specifically apply to your vehicle. It is apparent that some of these recalls effect some of our cars while not effecting all ... Read More

I am in the market for a 2001 Mercury Cougar C2 and I am finding it difficult to locate the exact car I am looking for, so I need some advice on compromises. I want the French Blue exterior and Midnight Black Leather interior, no ABS, and no Moonroof. Hard to find exactly that (really don't want to wait the 8-10 weeks for special order). Much better luck finding C2s without ... Read More
I'm beating a dead cat, er, uh, horse here but here goes anyway... A few months ago, I attended the Auto Show at the Convention Center here in downtown San Antonio, TX. Dear Mr. Ford, I think I have the qualifications to improve car sales for the Mercury Cougar by over 10,000 units from 2001. One of my greatest assets is, not to be underestimated, common sense. I would like the opportunity to visit with the executive board to discuss some ideas I have. These include, but are not limited to: 1. Offering a model which includes a engine capable of sub 7.0 ... OK, folks, here's your chance to make your case for the Cougar. My mother, who currently drives a '91 Nissan 240SX LE (in flawless condition), will purchase a new car to replace it within the next few months. Hello, I am new to this board but thought that I should at least sign myself in for support until my factory ordered Cougar arrives to my local dealership. I placed the order yesterday (1-17-01) and according to the dealer, the vehicle should arrive between the beginning of March 2001. For those of you that even care (ha, ha), I ordered my vehicle as follows: * V-6 Convenience Group * V-6 ... Read More
I found the following on the Lincolns of Distinction site (www.markviii.org). Bad news indeed, if true. "I'm just the messenger on this one. In speaking with a Ford employee, in a VERY HIGH UP posistion, I understand that this past weekend, behind closed doors, in the "Glass House" in Dearborn, the directive was given out. Cease all design divisions work pertaining to Mercury. Cancel all future design teams. Stick a fork ... Read More

You can go to the Mercury web site www.mercuryvehicles.com and look at the 2001 Cougar. I have had my Cougar since June of 1999 and still love it(all 16,600 mile of it). I am sure the '01 models are more trouble free than the '99's were ... Read More
Thanks Fredly. I called the dealership back today, and they are going to look at the car on the weekend. Hopefully things will be ok! Check out the new 2001 cougar.. Mercury has updated their site! www.mercuryvehicles.com
I checked out a Canadian site for the 2001 Cougar and lo and behold the base model is the V6 with the V6 S as an option. No I4. The Mercury site still lists an I4 as the base. Given the higher gas taxes in this country I would have thought the I4 would be a bigger seller here than in the U.S. Apparently not, and I must admit I have ... Read More
Everyone go to Crutchfield.com and visit the automotive electronics area. Sort the products according to your Mercury Cougar through the 2001 model year. Look under in-dash CD receivers, and tell me what you find under Kenwood... That's right! This screen, supposedly, will manage to slide out of ... Read More

I got back from Flat Rock last night after about 8 1/2 hours. It really wasn't bad, but from now on, on long trips, I'm bringing a co-pilot/alternate driver with me. :^) As Fredly mentioned, the CougarFest was incredible. Yeah, Badulah, I pretty much agree. What I'm actually asking / begging / demanding is the 2001 Cougar info. Pricing, model changes, etc. It's kind of fishy that we're pretty close to time now and Mercury still hasn't released any of this info. To me, it kind of gives weight to the persistent rumors about Mercury going away as a brand name, or the Cougar being discontinued, or something.
