LOS ANGELES — Kia confirmed on Monday that it will launch the Kia K900, a new full-size rear-wheel-drive flagship sedan in the U.S., starting next year.

The car will debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Kia said the K900 will be available with either a V6 or V8 engine. Specific launch timing was not spelled out.

"I can't give any more additional details at this point," said Scott McKee, a Kia Motors America spokesman, in a phone conversation with Edmunds.

The announcement means that the Korean automaker intends to take the brand further upmarket here and compete with BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. The K900 would be positioned above the 2014 Kia Cadenza, the brand's current front-wheel-drive flagship sedan. The Cadenza starts at $35,900. It is widely speculated that the K900 will carry a base price of between $50,000 and $70,000.

McKee would not say whether the K900 is based on the Hyundai Equus, the flagship sedan of Kia's sister brand. The K900 is expected to be equipped with luxury features and advanced safety technologies.

Kia has been known in the U.S. for affordable and funky products like the Kia Soul and for its memorable advertising campaigns starring hamsters.

Edmunds says: Are you ready for a $50,000 Kia?

Just how big is the market for luxury sedans above $50k??? Seems like every week there's a new one. And its not as if they're versatile. So one more. Woo hoo.

Hyundai and Kia are becoming like Chevrolet and Pontiac (RIP) as each seems to have an equivalent of each others individual products. Maybe a few exceptions ( SOUL and Genesis Coupe ) but you get my point, kapisha?

Kia and Hyundai both need timing chains in their V6 engines the 100,000 does not include the timing belt that needs to be changed at 60K. Bottom line it hurts their sales in the long run.
