MELBOURNE, Australia — The unveiling of the high-tech Holden VF Commodore on Sunday provided a preview of the 2014 Chevrolet SS.
The VF Commodore is the Holden version of the Chevrolet SS. The 2014 Chevrolet SS — short for Super Sport — production model will be unveiled on February 16 at Daytona International Speedway. The limited-production version of the Chevrolet SS will arrive in showrooms in late 2013. It will be the first time in 17 years that Chevrolet will offer a rear-wheel-drive sedan for sale in the U.S.
U.S. specifications on the Chevrolet SS have not been released. Holden took the wraps off the upscale VF Commodore Calais V model; a base model, plus SS V and HSV models are expected to be unveiled soon.
"No other car created in Australia is as technologically advanced and we're very proud that not only was the VF designed and engineered here, but it will also be exported to the USA for GM's biggest global brand, Chevrolet," said Mike Devereux, Holden chairman and managing director, in a statement.
The new VF Commodore puts a premium on fuel efficiency with lightweight aluminum panels, along with high-tech features such as Auto Park Assist on all models. With Auto Park Assist, the driver operates the pedals, but the car effectively parks itself. The system allows drivers to choose between parallel or 90 degree-angle parking.
Safety features include Reverse Traffic Alert, which warns of vehicles passing when reversing out of parking spaces, along with Blind Spot Alert, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning and a head-up display.
The VF Commodore gets a hood with what Holden calls a "subtle central power bulge," jeweled halogen projector headlights, flared wheel arches and a slim integrated spoiler. The cabin features a simple and elegant design with ice blue ambient lighting and leather touches.
Powertrain details were not announced.
Australia media reports that a next-generation Commodore is already in the works and is due at the end of 2016.
Edmunds says: The Holden VF Commodore whets the appetite for the 2014 Chevrolet SS production model, which will debut on Saturday.
