ST. LOUIS — The redesigned 2014 Ford Transit Connect Taxi is designed to give the 2014 Nissan NV200 Taxi a run for the money. The taxi was unveiled on Sunday at the 2013 International Association of Transportation Regulators Conference here.

An upgrade package allows the Transit Connect Taxi to run on clean-burning fuel, including compressed natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas.

The redesigned Ford taxi features such options as Sync with MyFord Touch and a rearview camera.

The NV200 Taxi has commanded a lot of headlines, especially since being picked by New York City as its taxi of tomorrow. Ford is calling the Transit Connect Taxi the "taxi of the future." It follows the old Ford Crown Victoria Taxi, a workhorse that plied the livery trade around the U.S.

The 2014 Ford Transit Connect Taxi comes with a new powertrain — a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine linked with a six-speed automatic transmission. Ford says the setup is expected to provide a "best-in-class highway fuel economy rating." It did not offer an estimate.

The redesign includes a decreased vehicle height for improved clearance, the addition of an interior hood release and increased cargo capacity.

The Ford taxi gets a new twist-beam rear suspension to improve ride quality. The taxi can be modified for wheelchair use, noted Ford.

The 2014 Ford Transit Connect Taxi will arrive in dealerships by early 2014. Pricing was not announced.

Edmunds says: Ford tweaks the Transit Connect Taxi with an eye toward fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.

@joe_scuba: Huh? Haven't you heard of the Crown Vic.? People want what works best. When they stopped updating and eventually making the Crown Vic. people turned to other things...

Best in class highway fuel economy? So what? Most taxi's spend the of their lives in cities. I know that many airports are outside the metro area (Denver for example is a long haul from the city), but still city mileage is what matters to taxi drivers, which is why the fleets are increasingly dominated by hybrids. The Transit taxi should come with a small diesel standard and have a hybrid option.
