PALO ALTO, California — Tesla Motors has announced a new $6,500 2013 Tesla Model S Performance Plus option.

The package includes upgraded suspension components, wider rear tires and a range improvement of six to 12 miles. The components include upgraded dampers, bushings, stabilizer bars and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires. Tesla says the rear tires are 0.79 inch wider and staggered for improved acceleration on low-grip surfaces.

The EPA says the 2013 Tesla Model S with the 85 kWh battery pack has a range of 265 miles. The new option package increases the range to 271-277 miles.

The package boosts the total base price of the Tesla Model S Performance variant to $94,890, including a $990 destination charge, and after a $7,500 federal tax credit, according to the automaker.

"After hundreds of iterations affecting every detail of the suspension, our vehicle dynamics team was able to achieve the rare outcome of simultaneously improving performance, comfort and efficiency," said Tesla in a statement on its Web site.
