WASHINGTON — BMW is recalling 29,800 2009-'12 BMW X5 xDrive 35d diesel vehicles because they may unexpectedly lose power-assisted steering, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

BMW also ordered a delivery stoppage of the vehicles in the U.S.

"The engine belt idler pulley bolt could loosen and break over time," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "If the engine belt idler pulley bolt breaks, the vehicle may unexpectedly lose power-assisted steering, increasing the risk of a crash."

BMW told federal safety regulators that it has not received any reports of any accidents or injuries related to the recall.

The affected bolt was manufactured incorrectly.

The affected vehicles were built from September 1, 2008 through November 15, 2012.

BMW dealers will replace and tighten the idler pulley bolt. The recall is expected to begin during January. Owners can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.

Edmunds says: BMW told federal safety regulators that parts are currently in transit from Germany and will be in stock soon, so it wouldn't hurt to keep in touch with your dealer if you own one of the affected X5s.
