Great car, poorly built

Andrew G., 06/28/2022
2022 Volkswagen Taos SE 4dr SUV (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

Bought a FWD SE in July 2021 for my teen daughter. Thought it would be perfect car for a new driver: tidy proportions, great visibility all the way around, nimble and responsive handling, easy tech and big touchscreen very close to driver. Six weeks after buying, got a recall notice about possible faulty fuel hose and clip which could lead to engine failure and fire while driving. My car not affected. When car was 3 months old and had 3k miles, my daughter was driving off to school and the engine starts to stall, can’t accelerate, great shaking. Have car towed to dealer. Cylinders misfired so engine went in to safe mode shutting down to 1 or 2 cylinders. They addressed this and I brought the car back to dealer about 3 weeks later so dealer could download and install new software patch from VW. 5 months after buying the car, took it to dealer for recall “24hv”, don’t even remember what this recall notice was for. On June 10, 2022, daughter starts car and begins to drive to work. Engine begins to stall. She pulls over, still in neighborhood. I drive her to work and then start the Taos and drive to dealer. Faulty fuel injectors, all four of them to be replaced. Dealer has had car for 17 days waiting on new fuel injectors. This car is 1 year old and has under 8k miles yet twice it’s experienced MAJOR ENGINE MALFUNCTION. Unfathomable how world’s 2nd largest car maker could build and sell such a horribly constructed piece of crap twenty years in to the 21st century. SUCH a disappointment because we otherwise love the car and think it’s perfect for a new driver but the reliability issues in the first 1 year and 8k miles of driving are unlike anything I’ve experienced after 33 years during which time I’ve bought or leased about 30 vehicles. Avoid the Taos for a few years until VW resolves these major issues that affect safety and dependability.

I purchased this car on July 1,2022. Two weeks ago at 6k miles I was driving down the road and the car decelerated to 20mph. The check engine light started blinking, epc light came on, caution symbol came on, traction control light came on. Took to the dealer and 7 stored codes for engine misfire and catalyst damaging combustion misfire. The dealer cleared the codes and told me nothing was wrong with it. Refused to take the car home and mysteriously my fuel injectors and harness needed replacing. Car has been in shop 2 weeks. Dealer provided a rental after first denying one available. Customer care was no help. Parts on backorder. Beware!!!!

I purchased the AWD Highline and love this SUV. I had a 2014 Tiguan and traded it in for a 2020 Jetta and then into a 2014 Tiguan. Jetta was not my cup of tea, and the new Tiguans I find too big for my purposes. I think the Taos is perfect despite some initial lousy press and comments on the AWD engine performance. It has all the luxuries and conveniences of a Tiguan and the liveliness of the Golf, making it perfect for city driving. The 7-speed dual-clutch does take some getting used to, but it is a fun and smooth experience once it is figured out. When looking for that extra pick up and go- the manual shift setting work excellent. The technology in this vehicle is outstanding with all the latest smartphone (wireless!) connectivity. The digital cockpit is a nice addition as well as the tuneable ambient lighting. The heated steering wheel is a must in Canada and the air conditioned seats are the cream on top. So far, so good with this great little VW!

This car feels premium and looks handsome. It’s quiet and comfortable, but fun and agile. Purchased the SEL 4Motion in pure gray. I test drove the BMW X1, the Toyota Venza, the Rav4, and the CRV. All were great rides, but the Taos literally had me smiling when I got on throttle. The ventilated seats are a nice feature that many SUVs do not have at this price point. Sure, there are a few hard touch plastics on the top of the dash, and I have experienced a little bit of the lag from the DSG transmission mated to the turbo (that reviewers note), but it’s overall a great machine for the price and spec list. I am coming from 16 years of Toyota sedans, so I am worried about the reliability, but I am cautiously optimistic that with great care, the Taos will be around for a while. If you’re driving 2 row SUVs in the compact and sub-compact class, give the Taos a test drive. You won’t regret it. I hope to update this review overtime. Update: 7/2/23 - I have had the Taos for over 2 years and almost 17,000 miles now. It is fun and comfortable to drive. As far as reliability - I did have a fuel line recall in September of 2021 that took around 5 weeks to do. Was provided a loner from the dealership. I then had a dealer overfill my oil, and the day they drained and refilled, I got a low coolant light come on and go off. They performed a pressure test, refilled, and I’ve never had an issue since. I have kept a close watch on the fluids ever since. In short, it’s not been as reliable as my past Camry or Corolla, but it’s also not been bad. The dealership has also been good about staying on top of it. I still love this little car, and therefore I give it 4 stars.

Although I like this vehicle, the rear brakes need to be replaced way to soon. This is a known issue with Volkswagen yet they will not cover the cost which can be as much as 700.00.

Recently purchased a Taos in the base trim (S). Even in base form it comes with carplay and the same powertrain as upper trims. It’s easy to drive, easy to get in and out, gets fantastic mpg and it’s very quiet. It is by far the most refined in this “tween” segment and directly competes with the trailblazer and seltos. The wheels on the base are my favorite and I hate camera inclusive windshields on upper trims. I don’t like drivers assistance features so the base fit the bill for me. The Taos also comes with awesome stock tires which is rare. The Bridgestone Turanza’s cut through puddles with no drama , and roll super quiet and smooth. The only thing I would like in addition would be a leather wrapped steering wheel.

I purchased vehicle for my college age daughter brand new. Right at 20K miles, the vehicle started leaking radiator fluid and also recall on brakes. My daughter took to Volkswagen dealership. The car remains in service nearly 6 weeks for a head gasket, radiator leak, brakes and has been awaiting parts since. She is without a loaner because she is 21 years of age. In addition, she has two college friends with same car and same thing happened right at 20K. After one of them having his car in shop for many weeks, he got his vehicle back only for service lights to come back on. I do not think VW has a solution for this problem. The customer service from corporate Volkswagen has been a lemon as well. I would highly recommend that consumer would not buy this vehicle for safety, longevity and poor customer service.

I replaced my Audi Q5 as the repair costs were astronomical. I actually like this better. The fuel economy is unbelievable, I like the acceleration and sport mode, interior lights are fun, headlights and exterior lighting is awesome, u-turns are a breeze, and the safety features on the SEL are outstanding. I have the front wheel drive and after 15,000 miles I’ve had no problems.

Misfire

In under 5k in miles my 2022 Taos had the fuel line, fuel clip, fuel pump, fuel injectors and fuel harness all replaced. Something was truly screwy with the Taos' fueling system. Having almost been in a couple different accidents because my car decided to begin misfiring at random times, I decided to ditch my Taos. The car was repaired 4 different times in only a month and half of ownership. Typically I do not purchase a new car with the expectation of it being in the shop other than general upkeep within the first few years of ownership. I hate admitting this but it wasn't until I got out of my Taos and into a different car did I realize how badly my Taos' performance actually was. Aesthetic Rating: 94% Reliability Rating: 17% "Nice is different than good."

VW did it right with this crossover SUV

I was NOT looking to get a new car lol. My dealership where I previously purchased my 2019 Jetta SEL contacted me about trade in with the value for my car being something I couldn’t say no to. I loved my Jetta, but if I was going to get into another vehicle I wanted something bigger. My dealership local to me had no stock and luckily I found the color/trim I wanted at a dealership about 250 miles away. They gave me a GREAT sight unseen appraisal on my Jetta and an amazing deal on purchasing the Taos (Feb2022). I love the size and all the features this car has. I have had absolutely no issues. I did a lot of research prior to deciding on this model. Like any vehicle there are always going to be issues and for the most part the people who have those issues are the only ones posting reviews. most all of what I do is city driving and I maintain a constant 30 miles to the gallon. I have the AWD Version of this vehicle so it has the seven speed transmission that acts more like a manual. It definitely took some adjusting for me to get used to it manner of driving but after 1200 miles the car has really gotten used to my driving style. I don’t experience any delays or lack of get up. I drive it entirely in Eco mode. I could not be happier with my purchase!

Bought the White SEL, love everything about it. Unfortunately my cv axle is already bad, no eta when parts will be available, no loaner car, nothing. Bought a new car that is potentially dangerous to drive. Been waiting on customer service Volkswagon for hours. Makes me wonder on longevity of the car or the reliability of it. other than that, handles nice, looks nice, and seems like a class understated car......will change review if and when fixed hopefully within 2weeks. They don't want to keep it probably due to having a lemon if they cant fix it within 30 days. See options if driving with bad cv axle is legally safe.

Less than a year and the car is completely undriveable with complete head gasket failure and the dealership is unable to order the parts to fix it car's been at the dealer since October now I get to start a more than 2-month process of vw buying my car back! The Customer Retention and Resolution Team is a joke and a nightmare to deal with. I spent my money on a Volkswagen product

Extensive Test Drive

Adam El, 06/18/2021
2022 Volkswagen Taos SE 4dr SUV (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

Just to be clear, I don’t own a Taos, but I am interested in it so I did an extensive test drive pretty much the day my local VW dealership got them in. I wanted a FWD SEL, but the only one available to drive was a FWD SE. Key impression: This thing is a blast to drive. It feels light, agile, wants to be tossed and chucked around. It is quick rather than fast. By this I mean that you’re not going to be racing sports cars 0-60 in this, but it is really light on its feet. Actually, at least for the FWD version, the steering is almost too light, where you have to catch yourself to keep a minor steering move from putting you in the next lane. Boring this thing is not! I’ve seen some reviewers elsewhere say they felt some turbo lag, but that was not my experience. It felt fast enough, quite responsive, and just plain fun. It is quite spacious front, read, and cargo. The front seats felt comfortable, but I’d need longer with it to say for sure. The rear seats have lots of legroom, but I noticed that to get that, VW lowered the rear seats a bit. Taller people in the back might be a bit uncomfortable because their legs would be angled up, and shorter people or children might be annoyed because they would be sitting so low as to not see out the windows very well. Kids in car seats or booster seats should be OK. The trunk was decently large, looked bigger than any subcompact SUV’s, but not quite at CRV or RAV4 size. Note that the FWD versions have slightly larger cargo than the AWD versions because they have the smaller torsion beam rear suspension rather than the multi link suspension the AWD gets. I had no issue with how the rear suspension behaved, so I’m fine with the torsion beam FWD version to get the cheaper price and larger cargo, but then again I live in sunny California. If I lived somewhere that got a lot of snow, I’d probably want the AWD. The infotainment system was very intuitive and easy to use and felt and looked quite modern. No complaints, except I would have liked a 360 degree camera option, though maybe the Taos is small enough not to need it. Also, visibility is excellent. You can see clearly in any angle, with large wide windows. Sound quality was fine. Didn’t have it for enough time to really test mpg, and obviously reliability and so on are unknown (some people have problems with VW’s, though I had a Passat for 4 years that was absolutely solid and reliable during that time). I think the ideal customers for the Taos are individuals or young families who want something fun and lively and efficient, that can carry a lot for its size, but understand this is not going to replace a 3-row SUV or minivan.

Too dangerous to drive

I purchased a 2022 VW Taos for my daughter in July, 2021. In August 2021 I received a recall notice that told me to take my vehicle to the dealer immediately. The dealer informed me that I had a leaking fuel line, and the the vehicle was too dangerous to drive since leaking fuel could cause it to explode at any moment. The dealer impounded my car, and after 2 weeks is still waiting for the parts to repair it. Evidently the parts are coming from China, and no one knows when they will arrive. No loaner or rental car was offered. So I am now paying $300/month for a car that I do not have. It is very unsettling to think that I put my daughter in a car that according to the dealer's service manager, could explode at any moment.

2022 VW Taos

I recently traded in my 2017 Honda HR-V in "Base" Trim with 67K miles on a new Taos. Getting $15.800 for my trade with "No'Dealer fees and another $1,000 discount, not bad for a 6 year old Vehicle that I originally paid $20.500 for? Getting back to the Taos. I completely disagree with the so called "experts" claim the so called sweet spot is the SE Trim, wrong. An upgraded Radio, heated exterior mirror, and fake vinyl/cloth interior and the same base digital cockpit? The S Model at $24,000 plus an extra $1000 for the IQ and Convenience Package is the best value. I've only had the Vehicle 2 weeks but so far, I love it. Not even broken in yet and getting an average of 33 mpg city/hwy with the FWD. Plenty of room, jack & spare tire, and reasonable pick up too. Was between Dust Blue and Black, Black won. No tinted privacy glass with Base S but 3M Color Stable Film installed for $150. UPDATE: One year and 16K driven and so far, the absolute best Small SUV I've ever owned. My first VW Vehicle and I am very impressed. Under 25K and little fault to find. Yeah, the pathetic Bicycle Horn has to go, (maybe in `23?) The Rear Hatch needs a Power closure button, not much else. I was so impressed by this Taos in "S" Trim in Black. At 25K with added Safety IQ package, a real bargain. I just took deliver of its first cousin a `22 Audi Q3 that I special ordered in Feb and it arrived from Hungry last week. Very similar Vehicles but almost twice the price with a lot of upscale luxury trim.

Love the vehicle for its confortability and gas mileage! The transmission is a tad jumpy at first, but im bow 700 miles and she's driving smooth (car needed time to learn how I drive). When it comes to power, it really has all the power that you need. Youre not going to be drag racing so take it easy on the peddle and she shifts really smooth. It comparison to the Tiguan, It is a tad smaller and you miss out on the 2 extra seats in the back, but the MPG is what got me and so far in the city I average about 28-31 CTY and im about 34-37 HWY so it's really not bad. The blinker sound inside is a bit aggressive but it's almost humorous and the sound quality is amazing if you adjust the center of the volume just one level back, it really brings the overall sound together nicely. Give what we got the Taos for, I'd give it a 9/10. Like any new car, your experience will differ from others, but definitely give one a test drive if you're in the market for a crossover!

I am basically happy with my purchase. The one thing that REALLY bothers me is how slow the car accelerates after slowing down/stopping. I’ve had people blow their horn because they think I’m driving to slow. It’s seriously frustrating and I don’t know why the TAOS does this! I’d probably not have purchased had I been aware of this prior to purchase.

I currently unfortunately own a 2022 Volkswagen Taos. I bought it brand new in March 2022. At first it seemed like a decent little SUV.. that went downhill very fast. The car has been to the dealership numerous times. I had a window that wouldn’t go up or down. I had a check engine light come on. Just things you wouldn’t expect with a brand new vehicle. When driving it, I feel like I’m in a boat. The car sways all over the road. The rear end feels extremely loose!! If there is any minor wind, the car is extremely hard to maintain lanes. The transmission is horrible. It either takes off very fast or is very sluggish and hardly moves. You never know what you’ll get. I’ve owned many vehicles and I’ve drove many vehicles. From cars, trucks to all the vehicles the military offers. I feel very unsafe when I drive this car. If I could trade this in tomorrow and not get completely screwed I would in a heartbeat. The only plus I have for this is the interior is decent and very spacious. That’s about all it has going for it.

I had this car (2022 Taos) approximately 6 months, I loved this car until I like many other owners got the recall notice . I took the car to the dealership to get it looked at. Shortly after I left the check engine light came on, I returned the car and they gave me a loaner. 2 days later they called me told me my car is safe to drive with the engine light on and needs a couple parts on back order. Part one a leak detection pump , part two pressure regulator valve. So now I am told to bring the loaner car back and drive my car while waiting for parts with the check engine light on. This is ridiculous a brand new car that was perfect and I loved turned into a unsafe trash car. Makes me sick to think I will be driving a new car I paid so much for only to have a check engine light on and waiting for parts for who knows how long.

My info sytem will randomly go black and reboot and if my phone is plugged in to charge it will also reboot. Having serious issues with my Taos.

I got my taos 4 months ago.. I got it with a rat stuck in dashboard complained to dealer was told i was crazy... The radio goes black or freezes randomly, you can hear clicking under steering wheel where feet are, the display changes by itself and u cant change it bc it freezes, got stuck at walmart for over 5 minutes bc it says cant find my key even though i had the key in front of the dashboard waving it around for over 5 minutes looking like a crackhead, had a few times says the rearview camera currently unavailable, had it turn off a few times at lights had to manually restart, replace the emission valve and pump due to failure, really bouncy and noise when driving, now my one rear brake on passenger side is completely gone and rotor is messed up and the dealership is blaming me telling me its unsafe to drive and wants me to sign a waiver to get vehicle back and tells me their is over 400 ppl waiting for them.... The transmission is very jerky

Have a soft spot in my heart for VW since had one as my first 2 cars back in the 1970s and 80s. I was a little apprehensive buying the Taos since those vehicles were okay but not great. Decided to go back to VW because the price was right and the test drive was surprisingly good. Very nice ride. Solid feel and fairly quiet ride. Good vision, amazing turning radius, outrageous cargo area for a small SUV. The interior is very spacious and second row can easily accommodate a 6' adult with the front seat completely back! If you don't drive aggressively you can get over 40 mpg on the highway - really. So far so good and I highly recommend the Taos. Approximately 2000 miles driven so far.

UPDATE: Still one star because I can't leave zero. After having this vehicle for 8 months, I stand by my review. VW finally came up with a software fix for the engine issue only took 6 months. HORRIBLE vehicle to drive. Transmission issues with shifting, stalls for no reason, windows go down when you pull the button to raise them ????? It's literally an Edsel/Yugo/Unicorn. Never in 40 yrs of car buying have I been more disappointed in a vehicle or felt more unappreciated and ripped off. I tried returning this Taos it to the dealer within 24 hours after purchase after I got a "real" test drive. They made a joke out of it and told me i was out of luck. They had my money, why should they care? (Penske Volkswagen North Scottsdale AZ) The road noise was so loud I couldnt listen to the radio and enjoy it. The ride is horrible. The seats are tight and small for a full sized adult. It has stalled at random intervals at least twice a week since I bought it in April. Last week while traveling in Southern California multiple warning lights came on for no apparent reason including the Stop Engine light. After wasting 3 days in Palm Springs with the VW dealer, I was told they are having many, many, many complaints about the same thing occuring in Taos models with the 1.5 engine (it's an AUDI engine by the way as they told me) and they are having issues with sensors going off when you use low grade fuel. (They recommend 87 octane) In spite of the highest gas prices in history, they said I now have to use 91 octane or higher or add an octane booster to my fuel until VW comes up with a fix. Is VW going to pay the extra dollar per gallon I have to pay for their mess up? Evidently they are awaiting approval from the EPA before they can issue a recall to reset the software. Silly and a waste of calories. That could take years! In the meantime, I am sick that I bought this vehicle. I've never owned a vehicle that makes me angry everytime I walk out to the garage and see it parked. I just want to set it on fire and be done with it. I'd trade it but the best offer I got from a new car dealer was nearly 10 grand less than I paid for it and the VW dealer I bought it from offered me 7500.00 less. Sick. I guess I'm stuck with another Edsel. Thanks VW, you've screwed the consumers once again! Maybe you'll end up buying all of these back like you did with the other cars you screwed up that malfunctioned due to your lies about the faulty exhaust systems. The biggest joke in Auto history. this vehicle is all looks and no brains. Run as fast as you can from the VW dealer, do not let yourself get roped into buying a Yugo disguised as a 2022 VW Taos. UPDATE: Jan 2025 Still driving this vehicle for a couple more weeks. Nothing but issues. Spent 2 weeks in the VW dealer having the head gasket and other parts replaced due to a recall. Took almost 5 months to get all the parts needed. VW said sorry, we're doing our best? Really? Never again will buy a VW.

Problems well under the 1st 1000 miles

I purchased a 2022 VW Taos SE and have had problems that started under the 1st 1000 miles. The remote start on the key fob does not work (which is the sole purpose I purchased the SE model) and I was told the ECM is 'throwing a code' on a part that is bad. This part (I was told an EGR or vac hose) is bad, and they are on back order, and have been on back order for a long period of time (is what the VW Tech said). The Taos will continue to throw this code, which in turn will keep me from using the remote start. It is frustrating when the vehicle has under 1000 miles on it (this started happening around 600 miles). In my opinion, spend the extra on a Toyota Rav4 or something more reliable.

This is a terrific vehicle in AWD. A week after purchasing, I drove 90 miles in a snow storm on highways, backroads, and steep icy driveways. I couldn’t believe how well it handled these tough conditions. I felt safe and comfortable. In normal weather this is a smooth comfortable vehicle with ample power and, so far, decent overall MPG of 27 in mixed driving in very cold often subzero weather.

The FWD Taos S is a sporty, fun drive. It looks sharp on the outside and has an excellent, roomy interior for a compact SUV. Visibility is much better than similar vehicles that size, like the Honda HRV, which I was almost considering instead. If you also opt for the S, definitely look for one with IQ Drive. My main complaint about the Taos S is lack of rear AC and lack of power lift gate. But those things aren't deal breakers. I much preferred the interior of the S to the SE. I did test drive several AWD Taos SE models. And at this point would not safely recommend them. Handling varied on each vehicle. One AWD model had the engine cut out unexpectedly. And the other AWD model handled beautifully. I've now driven my new FWD Taos over 1200 miles and have experienced no issues. All in all, the FWD Taos S with IQ Drive is probably the best value for your money and it's a blast to drive.

annoying, distracting, dangerous

Nice looking interior with decent room. Lots of hard interior plastics. After 2+ months of ownership I totally regret purchase. My 6 year old Hyundai was so much smoother, enjoyable, and more technologically advanced. Taos has many very annoying elements (beeps, alarms, messages). Vehicle software is disorganized and sometimes psychotic. Digital cockpit can change unexpectedly. Bizarre messages appear without warning or cause. Top level trim (SEL) is paltry, no HomeLink, power lift gate, seat memory, or ventilated seats. Frequent distractions while driving to the point of making the vehicle dangerous. Alarms and messages at interstate speeds literally scare the heck out of driver and passengers. Wireless charging pad makes devices so hot they can't be used till they cool off. Engine bucks and surges at low speeds to the point of throwing folks against the seats. Infotainment system has rebooted while driving causing a complete loss of media, comm, nav, etc. Twice it has even rebooted itself, that's how wacko it is. Navigation system database was almost 2 years out of date when I picked up the vehicle. Voice dictation is haphazard for the built-in nav and CarPlay. Microphone does not work consistently when using Android apps. NONE of the IQDrive components have been reliable or worked properly for the level of safety I expected. I have turned off as many as I could and quit using the rest in order to reduce distractions and unexpected behaviors by the vehicle. Rear cross traffic alert (RCTA) is without question the worst I have ever experienced, it is useless in any real world parking lot environment, The problems and quirks with this vehicle will drive you nuts and cause frustration and sometimes fear for you and your passengers. I now understand why VW cut 1/3 off their warranties. I'm already looking to trade. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more stop sale orders issued to dealerships. There will definitely be more recalls.

Bought a VW Taos. At 350 miles the vehicle locked into 1st gear. Dangerous situation because we were on a major highway and trying to pull over while in 1st gear, it would not allow acceleration to avoid oncoming traffic. Finally pulled over and let the car sit for a while. Started it and again, the car was locked in 1st gear. I WAS NOT IN MANUAL MODE!! Took it to the dealership who told me there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. Drove the vehicle home and at 405 miles same situation with my wife exiting a grocery store parking lot trying to merge into traffic. She could not accelerate the vehicle to avoid oncoming traffic because it was stuck in 1st gear. Thankfully merging traffic avoided her and we had the vehicle towed again to the dealership. We have had no resolution to this point, and the dealership has been just awful to deal with. I don't want to drive a car with a random defect that can end in a fatal accident. I am not going to wait for the 3rd occurrence to dispose of this vehicle. VW needs to deal with this!!!!!!!!!!!!

This car is definitely a looker inside and out and has great storage capacity compared to other vehicles in the segment and that was enough to sell me. I got my Taos in December of last year and 11 months later, the engine failed due to coolant in the oil and I’m in the process of going through a buyback. The jerkiness of the transmission is absolutely noticeable and frustrating at anything less than 45mph, if you have a longer highway commute you’ll be fine but between the transmission and turbo engine there is serious lag from a standstill and once that lag is up it will give you far too much power off the line. It’s gives you no power and then suddenly all of it. I have also had issues with my gauge cluster blacking out while driving twice leaving me with no speedometer, temp or anything as it is digital. Overall the car looks great and has some awesome standard tech, however, if you choose it because you find other segment vehicle’s like the RAV4, CRV, or Crosstrek to be “boring”, think twice because boring in most cases means predictable and reliable. I will certainly be going that route in my unexpected car search.

If you can purchase something else, consider anything OTHER than the Taos. It's a very basic compact SUV that is outclassed by probably 9/10 of its competitors. It has a nice appearance overall, but has a lot to be desired once you leave the dealer. My vehicle is approximately 10 months old, not driven as much and currently has less than 5,000 miles on it. One star is the best I could give this vehicle, maybe two on a good day. Drive: Very poor handling on the streets. Have to drive in Sport mode to keep up with traffic. The stalling the engine does when you slow down makes it very dangerous because the car automatically wants to turn off when coming to a stop, the start/stop mode is supposed to help but is a liability. This is a big issue when slowing down to turn.. the car feels like it's losing too much power when making a right turn that feels unsafe and unless you have the start/stop mode off, making a left turn is even more of a challenge. And because of the poor handling, making turns feels like the car is throwing you out of the driver's seat - almost roller coaster like, if you ever been on a ride that only has the bar that covers your leg and not the full harness, you know what I mean. Interior: Poor design inside the vehicle, related to comment above - it could use an armrest, which might help when making turns. The dash/cockpit and steering wheel are the best assets in the S. The area to plug your phone has a weird angle that makes it tough to plug into unless you're in Park, the CarPlay continuously disconnects due to the angle and/or hitting a bump disconnects the phone slightly making it necessary to unplug and replug the phone while driving. The SE and higher trims much better technology set-up that has wireless charging and connection so, the cord appears to not have the same issue with CarPlay but I don't know for sure. It's a very compact car, I find that the passenger seat ride is okay - I have a baby-seat in the rear that only allows for so much room in front-passenger seat but, you should not need to push the seat back for basic foot room. I'm also 5'6" so I could only imagine how folks 5'7" and above might feel in that seat. Conversely, the back seating area is much more spacious than the passenger seat. It's pretty clear that the manufacturer is hyper focused on upselling to models beyond the S. Power seating, keyless entry, rear cargo cover should be standard - but that'll cost an extra 5-6K to get that and upgraded technology. Technology sure, but this is other stuff is just plain cheap not not valuing customer retention. The objective is to make me want to buy a higher model because of additional value - not nickel and dime me for what's almost standard in most vehicles worth your time in 2022. Electrical/Technology: Related to Start/Stop and other safety features, the vehicle has some bugs that I'm hoping can be resolved. Lately, while driving, the car will flash the check engine light when it's low on gas... but it also shuts down and needs to be restarted at stoplights. There's been a few times that I've been trying to pull off and had to quickly restart the car. Gas: Gets average mpg.. my car had the fuel line recall and was out of service for several months due to a backlog in parts. Very great mileage on a road trip. There's so much more that could be said about the vehicle. But, in short, until they fix basic issues you should avoid buying a Taos. It's been a disappointment to say the least.

I have had different VWs during my life, I always loved them, no issues at all with any of them. Except for the Taos, VW Taos is a lemon. Steering rattle, fuel leaks, suspension noises, cluster layout display change randomly, as well as extremely low screen brightness. And that is before the year, I cannot imagine what else will fail in the coming weeks.

I have put over 36,000 miles on my 2022 VW Taos SEL AWD. I have owned it since July of 2022 and have had zero mechanical or performance issues to date. I am currently getting just over 37.1 average mpg and I drive approximately 550 miles per week up and over the White Pass in Washington State (US). This vehicle has been incredibly safe, and fun vehicle to drive. There have never been issues with snow or ice driving and the 'snow mode' and off-road mode are brilliant in response to harsh atmospheres & driving conditions. The only issue I have had is with the Android Auto not connecting or shutting off, but this is easily fixable and the only complaint I have is that the visors are not designed for shorter people and do not 'slide' so that you can shade your eyes from the sun. I had my 30k mile service and everything was in great shape. No issues with brake wear, no issues with oil consumption and the vehicle is reliable beyond what I thought it would be. Overall, I give it a solid 5/5.

Traveling a lot for work I've always enjoyed getting a Jetta for a rental car and I drove Audi's back in the late 80's and early 90's so I've always liked VW in general. So here is my story... I was tired of waiting for the Subaru Outback I ordered last October so in March 2022 I bought a Taos 4-Motion because it was available. I was convinced it would be a better choice anyway because the 1.5T should certainly get much better millage than the Subaru 2.4T. Sadly, I was mistaken... Although it's not that bad on smooth pavement, the Taos is extremely loud on any kind of textured pavement, so much that it would be very fatiguing on a long road trip. I don't know if this is just a tire issue or if the car just isn't insulated properly. I wish I had taken along a sound pressure meter so I could later compare with the Outback. If I were to guess I would say the Outback is at least 15 to 20 dB quieter on textured pavement. I wasn't too worried about the excessive turbo lag because I planned to drive so as to maximize gas millage anyway. On one occasion however the lag was so bad that it created a dangerous situation. Pulling out of an intersection I had time so I punched it but it didn't go anywhere then suddenly, a couple seconds later it lurched forward as on coming traffic was getting closer than expected. If I knew it was going to delay that long I would have waited. The turbo lag is so bad that VW is going to have to do something on future year models otherwise this car will have to be discontinued within a year model or two. If the Taos would have gotten really good mpg on the highway I might have been willing to keep it but it didn't. It was only getting about 29 mpg. I expect the Outback Onyx XT to get at least 24 to 25 mpg on the highway so the slight mpg advantage of the Taos wasn't enough to justify its shortcomings. I will give it one plus here, the computer estimated gas millage was within 0.2 mpg of actual millage. Most cars are 5% or even up to 10% off, I drive a lot of rental cars traveling for work so I check. The computer always tells you you're getting about 5 to 10% better millage than you are actually getting. I'm convinced manufacturers do this on purpose because they know most people won't check or don't even know how to check. So good for VW for making the mpg estimate display correct. The end of April 2022 my Outback Onyx arrived. After owning the Taos for about 5 weeks and driving it for only 1 week due to being flown out of state on business, I traded the Taos for the Outback. That brings up the next issue with the Taos, price! The Taos sticker was about $37,500 but I had to pay $1000 over invoice because it was available now. The Onyx sticker was $37,002., about $500 less than the Taos. I took about a $4K hit trading in the Taos with just 900 miles on it but it was well worth it to get rid of it. This is not an Outback review so we'll just call the Outback unity. (We normalize to 1) Relative to this the Taos wasn't even in the same class in terms of overall performance or quality despite costing more! For millage to size/performance ratio the Taos would be maybe a 0.7. For comfort/noise level it would be a 0.2 at best. For value to dollar ratio maybe about a 0.5. I had seen comments on reviews/YouTube reviews etc of people going on about how the Taos wasn't worth the price. Comments suggested almost any other vehicle in the class is a far superior deal. I thought these people just didn't like VW and were bashing it but now I see this is not the case. Those people are correct, this is not a value product, not even close. It's sad because historically I've liked VW but if I ever buy another one it's going to be a Jetta. I owned a 2019 Jetta S for 6 days until an idiot in a pickup truck rammed it. I liked it and I probably should have replaced it and might yet one day buy another one. But that poor Taos... I was already starting to hate driving it within two or three days. I wish that hadn't been the case, I wish it would have been a nice quiet ride with reasonable turbo lag and great millage but it just didn't stand up to the test in any of those. The Outback is my first Subaru so maybe I will write a review of it after driving it for a time. You might argue I didn't drive the Taos long enough to write a review but quite honestly I couldn't, I rapidly began to really hate driving it. I don't think I could have driven it another week. Unfortunately VW needs to halt sales of the Taos until it can be improved or otherwise they need to discontinue it. It's a good idea gone terribly wrong!

I bought this car for my Wife, mind you I’ve never owned a brand new car alway naught used or rebuilt for myself. So 1st brand new car. Took it to the dealership for its first oil change one week later check engine light. The told me not to over fill the the fuel, it messes with the censor. Told me they would have to order new filler neck. One week later it starts sputtering and now for some reason it has contaminated fuel. Had to pay $350 to remove “bad” fuel and change filters. Mind you I put the same fuel in my other vehicle with no issues. I’m not happy with it at all and now regret buying a new car.

This is my 5th VW and by far the worst experience I've had as a VW owner. I leased the Taos in July 2022. Since then it has had two recalls, one of which failed this summer and my engine cut off while driving. It's been in the VW service department 3 times in the last 4 months. Once for the failed recall, once for a fuel gauge issue that wasn't allowing the fuel gauge to register correctly and now because of multiple failures pertaining to the driver side door, including the fact that an "engine running" warning light and beeping signal appears while driving and then the emergency/parking brake deploys anytime I slow down. The fuel gauge still isn't fixed, but my bigger concern is the safety issue of driving when a parking brake is deploying. The only good thing I can say about this vehicle is that it gets good gas mileage. I've never been more ready to turn a car in after a lease. Super disappointing on the part of VW to allow a vehicle with so many issues to remain on the road.

Love most of my Taos

Leased the SE in a July 2021 & have just over 10k miles on it. I love that it only needs an oil change every 10k miles (first two covered by dealer). I’ve been lucky that my Taos passed the recalls. Don’t like the “lag” or “jump” some refer to but it doesn’t seem to happen if the auto start/stop function (which is to conserve fuel I was told) is turned off. It’s the first thing I do once I start the car. Mine’s a turbo and it drives like one. Sound system / technology is good outside of the speakers. Am used to better. I did have a warranty defect with the Sunglass holder. It opened one day while I was driving and wouldn’t close. Dealer taking care of it and mentioned it happened with some of the VW models. Gets decent gas mileage (my other car is a hybrid so can’t really compare lol). Like the heated seats, tons of leg room in back seat for my tall son and cargo space. Drove well on snow (mine is FWD). Auto bright lights is wonderful. Initial wipers were squeaky but dealer is replacing those too. Fun to drive and love the grey color of the car. I wanted a small SUV that didn’t feel small and the Taos is perfect for that at an affordable price. Second VW for me (my husband is a diehard VW fan and owner).

Jerks when taking off, road noise is so bad I can not hear radio when on I-80. Washed it first Tim’s and paint coming off wheels. Very difficult to wash and dry. I have owned 10+ new cars and this Taos is by far the worst vehicle I have ever bought. DO NOT BUY THIS [non-permissible content removed]!!!

I really wanted to like this Taos. Nice size, good looking. That’s where it ends. Volkswagen is not producing the fine German quality at an affordable price anymore, IMHO. I have owned 2 Passats and 2 Jettas in the past. I also test drove a GLI Jetta, sorry, just feels cheap with a lot of road noise! At 29k, MSRP? Whoa! In 2015 bought a Passat SE for 26k. The Taos was stickered at 31k, and no dealer markup, that part was refreshing. I was rather stunned at how wishy washy the suspension felt, taking advantage of every imperfection in the road. Also, an unacceptable amount of road noise even on a smooth freeway. The base radio was a joke, not in a good way, very poor across the board range. The worst part of the test drive was the poor peddle feel. Going over speed bumps your foot will “rock” on the peddle and is very difficult to find the sweet spot under any driving conditions, very hurky jerky, and some of the reason is the poor transmission meshing with the accelerator. So, if you’re looking for looks alone, buy it. Otherwise be careful. I bought a beautiful Camry for 28k, just more refined all around.

I like this car a lot. Great gas mileage, over 30 mpg in mixed driving. The transmission is excellent, no complaints. Turbo lag is noticeable. it takes a half second to rev up, but after that half second it takes off like a jet! Heated steering wheel, auto high beams, good heater in Winter. Great suspension, especially compared to a Jetta. I don't think I will ever sell this car, I love to drive it. This is VW # 7 for me. I'm a VW fan. I think this is the best VW built so far. All wheel drive and 6.5 inch clearance, it does great in the snow. I have driven it 5500 miles so far.

My little Taos gives me what I wanted, a "cheaper" runaround SUV. The 8spd trans on the FWD seems much less clunky than the versions with the 7spd trans I test drove. Unfortunately, that improvement is somewhat mitigated when you turn the AC on. But I suppose that's understandable. Decent stopping distances. Overall, a nice little SUV with enough storage.

A lot more pick-up than the Jeep Compass I drove while renting from National. Lots of room and great leg space in the backseat. Best of all it gets great gas mileage.

I love the SUV to drive, great gas mileage, comfortable, lots of features and good warranty. Problem is VW Corp knows of problems like infotainment system problems and head gasket issues and they will not issue recalls. My car has only 14K miles and already has had to have the head gasket replaced and they cannot duplicate the problem with the infotainment system as it will just cut off and reload several times a day. When you are a Realtor that uses nav to show properties this can be a problem. I have always loved VW and the service and warranty, but they have dropped the ball on this one. I will be trading the car in soon.
