Noisy, serious turbo lag, poor millage, expensive.

Traveling a lot for work I've always enjoyed getting a Jetta for a rental car and I drove Audi's back in the late 80's and early 90's so I've always liked VW in general. So here is my story... I was tired of waiting for the Subaru Outback I ordered last October so in March 2022 I bought a Taos 4-Motion because it was available. I was convinced it would be a better choice anyway because the 1.5T should certainly get much better millage than the Subaru 2.4T. Sadly, I was mistaken... Although it's not that bad on smooth pavement, the Taos is extremely loud on any kind of textured pavement, so much that it would be very fatiguing on a long road trip. I don't know if this is just a tire issue or if the car just isn't insulated properly. I wish I had taken along a sound pressure meter so I could later compare with the Outback. If I were to guess I would say the Outback is at least 15 to 20 dB quieter on textured pavement. I wasn't too worried about the excessive turbo lag because I planned to drive so as to maximize gas millage anyway. On one occasion however the lag was so bad that it created a dangerous situation. Pulling out of an intersection I had time so I punched it but it didn't go anywhere then suddenly, a couple seconds later it lurched forward as on coming traffic was getting closer than expected. If I knew it was going to delay that long I would have waited. The turbo lag is so bad that VW is going to have to do something on future year models otherwise this car will have to be discontinued within a year model or two. If the Taos would have gotten really good mpg on the highway I might have been willing to keep it but it didn't. It was only getting about 29 mpg. I expect the Outback Onyx XT to get at least 24 to 25 mpg on the highway so the slight mpg advantage of the Taos wasn't enough to justify its shortcomings. I will give it one plus here, the computer estimated gas millage was within 0.2 mpg of actual millage. Most cars are 5% or even up to 10% off, I drive a lot of rental cars traveling for work so I check. The computer always tells you you're getting about 5 to 10% better millage than you are actually getting. I'm convinced manufacturers do this on purpose because they know most people won't check or don't even know how to check. So good for VW for making the mpg estimate display correct. The end of April 2022 my Outback Onyx arrived. After owning the Taos for about 5 weeks and driving it for only 1 week due to being flown out of state on business, I traded the Taos for the Outback. That brings up the next issue with the Taos, price! The Taos sticker was about $37,500 but I had to pay $1000 over invoice because it was available now. The Onyx sticker was $37,002., about $500 less than the Taos. I took about a $4K hit trading in the Taos with just 900 miles on it but it was well worth it to get rid of it. This is not an Outback review so we'll just call the Outback unity. (We normalize to 1) Relative to this the Taos wasn't even in the same class in terms of overall performance or quality despite costing more! For millage to size/performance ratio the Taos would be maybe a 0.7. For comfort/noise level it would be a 0.2 at best. For value to dollar ratio maybe about a 0.5. I had seen comments on reviews/YouTube reviews etc of people going on about how the Taos wasn't worth the price. Comments suggested almost any other vehicle in the class is a far superior deal. I thought these people just didn't like VW and were bashing it but now I see this is not the case. Those people are correct, this is not a value product, not even close. It's sad because historically I've liked VW but if I ever buy another one it's going to be a Jetta. I owned a 2019 Jetta S for 6 days until an idiot in a pickup truck rammed it. I liked it and I probably should have replaced it and might yet one day buy another one. But that poor Taos... I was already starting to hate driving it within two or three days. I wish that hadn't been the case, I wish it would have been a nice quiet ride with reasonable turbo lag and great millage but it just didn't stand up to the test in any of those. The Outback is my first Subaru so maybe I will write a review of it after driving it for a time. You might argue I didn't drive the Taos long enough to write a review but quite honestly I couldn't, I rapidly began to really hate driving it. I don't think I could have driven it another week. Unfortunately VW needs to halt sales of the Taos until it can be improved or otherwise they need to discontinue it. It's a good idea gone terribly wrong!

Love this baby. This is the compact SUV I never knew I wanted. She zooms on the highway, quiet cabin, full of technology and safety features, smooth ride… and I have the base S level. Affordable and still has apple car play and heated seats. Sold! I’m so happy with the purchase.

Purchase Date: 12/10/22 Times at the dealer: 3 Issues: Remote start continuously stops working; check engine light; gas tank wouldn't open when hitting the interior switch; shut down and would not recognize either key fob to restart, nor would the car start from CarNet, then the car randomly starts an hour later; slows down when accerlating.

Fuel issues, don’t buy!!!

I bought this car for my Wife, mind you I’ve never owned a brand new car alway naught used or rebuilt for myself. So 1st brand new car. Took it to the dealership for its first oil change one week later check engine light. The told me not to over fill the the fuel, it messes with the censor. Told me they would have to order new filler neck. One week later it starts sputtering and now for some reason it has contaminated fuel. Had to pay $350 to remove “bad” fuel and change filters. Mind you I put the same fuel in my other vehicle with no issues. I’m not happy with it at all and now regret buying a new car.

Love most of my Taos

Leased the SE in a July 2021 & have just over 10k miles on it. I love that it only needs an oil change every 10k miles (first two covered by dealer). I’ve been lucky that my Taos passed the recalls. Don’t like the “lag” or “jump” some refer to but it doesn’t seem to happen if the auto start/stop function (which is to conserve fuel I was told) is turned off. It’s the first thing I do once I start the car. Mine’s a turbo and it drives like one. Sound system / technology is good outside of the speakers. Am used to better. I did have a warranty defect with the Sunglass holder. It opened one day while I was driving and wouldn’t close. Dealer taking care of it and mentioned it happened with some of the VW models. Gets decent gas mileage (my other car is a hybrid so can’t really compare lol). Like the heated seats, tons of leg room in back seat for my tall son and cargo space. Drove well on snow (mine is FWD). Auto bright lights is wonderful. Initial wipers were squeaky but dealer is replacing those too. Fun to drive and love the grey color of the car. I wanted a small SUV that didn’t feel small and the Taos is perfect for that at an affordable price. Second VW for me (my husband is a diehard VW fan and owner).
