A beast in the snow

2022 Volkswagen Taos SE 4dr SUV AWD (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)

This is a terrific vehicle in AWD. A week after purchasing, I drove 90 miles in a snow storm on highways, backroads, and steep icy driveways. I couldn’t believe how well it handled these tough conditions. I felt safe and comfortable. In normal weather this is a smooth comfortable vehicle with ample power and, so far, decent overall MPG of 27 in mixed driving in very cold often subzero weather.

LOVE my new Taos

The FWD Taos S is a sporty, fun drive. It looks sharp on the outside and has an excellent, roomy interior for a compact SUV. Visibility is much better than similar vehicles that size, like the Honda HRV, which I was almost considering instead. If you also opt for the S, definitely look for one with IQ Drive. My main complaint about the Taos S is lack of rear AC and lack of power lift gate. But those things aren't deal breakers. I much preferred the interior of the S to the SE. I did test drive several AWD Taos SE models. And at this point would not safely recommend them. Handling varied on each vehicle. One AWD model had the engine cut out unexpectedly. And the other AWD model handled beautifully. I've now driven my new FWD Taos over 1200 miles and have experienced no issues. All in all, the FWD Taos S with IQ Drive is probably the best value for your money and it's a blast to drive.

annoying, distracting, dangerous

2022 Volkswagen Taos SEL 4dr SUV w/Prod. End 10/21 (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

Nice looking interior with decent room. Lots of hard interior plastics. After 2+ months of ownership I totally regret purchase. My 6 year old Hyundai was so much smoother, enjoyable, and more technologically advanced. Taos has many very annoying elements (beeps, alarms, messages). Vehicle software is disorganized and sometimes psychotic. Digital cockpit can change unexpectedly. Bizarre messages appear without warning or cause. Top level trim (SEL) is paltry, no HomeLink, power lift gate, seat memory, or ventilated seats. Frequent distractions while driving to the point of making the vehicle dangerous. Alarms and messages at interstate speeds literally scare the heck out of driver and passengers. Wireless charging pad makes devices so hot they can't be used till they cool off. Engine bucks and surges at low speeds to the point of throwing folks against the seats. Infotainment system has rebooted while driving causing a complete loss of media, comm, nav, etc. Twice it has even rebooted itself, that's how wacko it is. Navigation system database was almost 2 years out of date when I picked up the vehicle. Voice dictation is haphazard for the built-in nav and CarPlay. Microphone does not work consistently when using Android apps. NONE of the IQDrive components have been reliable or worked properly for the level of safety I expected. I have turned off as many as I could and quit using the rest in order to reduce distractions and unexpected behaviors by the vehicle. Rear cross traffic alert (RCTA) is without question the worst I have ever experienced, it is useless in any real world parking lot environment, The problems and quirks with this vehicle will drive you nuts and cause frustration and sometimes fear for you and your passengers. I now understand why VW cut 1/3 off their warranties. I'm already looking to trade. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more stop sale orders issued to dealerships. There will definitely be more recalls.

Bought a VW Taos. At 350 miles the vehicle locked into 1st gear. Dangerous situation because we were on a major highway and trying to pull over while in 1st gear, it would not allow acceleration to avoid oncoming traffic. Finally pulled over and let the car sit for a while. Started it and again, the car was locked in 1st gear. I WAS NOT IN MANUAL MODE!! Took it to the dealership who told me there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. Drove the vehicle home and at 405 miles same situation with my wife exiting a grocery store parking lot trying to merge into traffic. She could not accelerate the vehicle to avoid oncoming traffic because it was stuck in 1st gear. Thankfully merging traffic avoided her and we had the vehicle towed again to the dealership. We have had no resolution to this point, and the dealership has been just awful to deal with. I don't want to drive a car with a random defect that can end in a fatal accident. I am not going to wait for the 3rd occurrence to dispose of this vehicle. VW needs to deal with this!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great looks but don’t be fooled

This car is definitely a looker inside and out and has great storage capacity compared to other vehicles in the segment and that was enough to sell me. I got my Taos in December of last year and 11 months later, the engine failed due to coolant in the oil and I’m in the process of going through a buyback. The jerkiness of the transmission is absolutely noticeable and frustrating at anything less than 45mph, if you have a longer highway commute you’ll be fine but between the transmission and turbo engine there is serious lag from a standstill and once that lag is up it will give you far too much power off the line. It’s gives you no power and then suddenly all of it. I have also had issues with my gauge cluster blacking out while driving twice leaving me with no speedometer, temp or anything as it is digital. Overall the car looks great and has some awesome standard tech, however, if you choose it because you find other segment vehicle’s like the RAV4, CRV, or Crosstrek to be “boring”, think twice because boring in most cases means predictable and reliable. I will certainly be going that route in my unexpected car search.
