Excellent value for the price

I owned a 2017 Jetta S manual and recently purchased a 2022 Jetta Sport manual. The upgrades are significant in the '22. The seats are more comfortable and much more attractive. The 1.5L turbo has more punch, and the six speed manual is among the smoothest I've ever driven (and I have owned numerous standard transmission cars over 30 years of driving). The optional Driver Assistance package is an awesome addition for the price. The autonomous cruise works well, leather steering wheel/shifter add some fit and finish, and knowing the car is equipped with emergency braking technology offers peace of mind. The best accident is the one you avoid. I've filled the tank twice in this car. My first tank was a mix of city/highway, and I managed 37.9 mpg. The second tank of mostly highway driving surpassed 41 mpgs. My 17 Jetta would manage nearly 50 mpgs on long highway trips, and I have no doubt this new drivetrain will manage the same once broken in. Outstanding efficiency. There are some basic plastics inside, and the car has an underwhelming radio. It doesn't have satellite radio unless you buy the top trim, and I think that's a meaningful omission and marketing mistake. That should be standard equipment, or at a minimum optional on any trim other than the base model. It's my only complaint. All in all, it's a far-improved car over the past five model years. Noticeable improvement in the interior with digital instrumentation, seats, standard technology. The car has grown a few inches to really ride the line between a compact and midsize, which I really appreciate at the compact price. Massive trunk. While nobody will confuse the car with an Audi, it definitely is a handsome vehicle for the pedestrian price point. I definitely recommend the Sport model over the S for the small price increase. It meaningfully changes the presence of the automobile, both inside and out. Is this a swanky car? Of course not. This is a bargain purchase. But VWs are safe, extremely efficient, feel well-built inside and out, and my 17 caused me zero mechanical or reliability issues in the five years I owned it. Nothing broke on the car at all, nothing required unexpected service. It's what brought me back for another quality commuter vehicle. We have a much more expensive family SUV which shares our garage with the Jetta. The Jetta is the better value for the purchase price, as long as you have reasonable expectations for what you're purchasing. I would definitely recommend the brand and the vehicle far and away above any other competitive product other than the Honda Civic. That's a great car, too, and a comparable product. Between the two, I would argue it comes down to aesthetic preferences, but this car deserves far more accolades than it seems to be receiving.

Get the SEL Premium if you can!

This vehicle drives well above its class. Despite the small engine and low HP, it is peppy and smooth, and is eager to go. It’s very refined in its handling, reminding me of the mercedes S my Dad had when I was younger and I did my learners permit training on. No, it isn’t a V8 like that, but driving it feels very similar, which means VW had come a long way. No rattles or squeaks so far. The heated and cooled leather seats are comfortable, the driving position is great for a 6-3 person like me, the rear seats are easy to get kids into car seats (unlike last gen Jetta). The AC system cools well, the new stereo is cool (though I think it is due for a firmware update to fix a few bugs), and the digital cockpit is an awesome feature. Edmunds claims they only got 30mpg combined. What were they doing? I live in a very hilly area and get 30mpg city on those trips. That’s a 600 ft elevation climb to drop kids at school, waiting in car lines, stopping starting and parking. And I turn the auto stop/start off. But I use the adaptive cruise control religiously, and I think that really helps with gas mileage. On a highway run, I got 46 mpg. YMMV, but this is during the hot summer with AC running. Considering what the average new car goes for, getting this car for under $29000 seems like a steal.

I don’t understand why somebody would buy a non turbo Mazda 3 (the comparable car) rather than this. The Jetta has great low end torque for around town driving that makes it very peppy. Easily handles passing on the highway at 80mph+. Fairly quiet and smooth ride. Interior is well designed but not fancy. The infotainment system with wireless CarPlay is a underrated feature - its quick and I’ve never had an issue. Adaptive cruise control is basic but works well. Passengers have plenty of space (two large car seats now). I get 40-42mph on highways despite having AC blasting ice, CarPlay on, and going 80mph.

The Jetta SEL Premium is an outstanding compact car. The exterior design is very attractive. The interior is quieter and more luxurious than its competitors. The gas mileage is astounding. I get over 51 miles/gl on the highway and for the first 1,800 miles of mixed city/highway traffic the average is 37.6 miles/gl. The car fully deserves the 'baby-Audi' nickname. VW has a winner here!

Best Car I ever owned

I'm 60 years old, I've worked on cars all my adult life and I've owned many cars, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Honda, Toyota and on and on, many. This 2023 Jetta would be the first VW I've ever own. I've only had it for a few months, 7 to be exact, and so far I LOVE this car. with todays high cost of gasoline 42 to 44 miles a gallon is a blessing. It handless just a good as a A4 or 3 series BMW. it be silly to compare it with a Audi S5, witch is what a drove before but then again a S5 is a $75.000 car. for $24.000 this car is a better choice, hands down. bottom line if your in the market for a reliable, fun, good looking and well priced car, this is definitely one to consider.

The performance, size, and safety are hard to beat at the price point. If you get the SE, R Line or SEL it feels like an Audi. Love the 40+MPG on regular too. My 3rd Jetta and I love it.

Nice Car

I have only had my 2023 VW Jetta Sport for a little over a month. So far, I have only one major complaint that I am deducting one star for. This car does not come with a spare tire!! I had to shell out an extra $300+ to get a compact spare, jack, and lug wrench. This, in my opinion, is a major mistake on the part of the manufacturer for not including one. The Jetta Sport is an overall nice vehicle. The ride is comfortable but, a little stiff. The suspension along with the limited slip differential lets the car corner nicely without any indication of wanting to overbalance. I haven't really pushed the car while cornering but have taken sharp turns at or a little above the posted speed limit without having to back off the accelerator as I would in other cars I have owned. There is some lag in acceleration from the turbo when starting from a dead stop. However, this is a non-issue unless you are trying for best time in the quarter mile. There is also plenty of power for passing on the highway. The driver assist features are nice, although I have not tried them all out yet. The lane assist is a nice feature. It only served to tell me I am almost always staying in my lane. An audible warning would be nice if you edge out of your lane as you have to constantly look at the dash to see the warning. There is also a little icon that pops up if you get too close the car in front of you so you know to back off. Hopefully, I will never have to find out if the Intelligent Crash Response System works. The issues that other reviewers have voiced complaints about (too much plastic in the cockpit and the center console rubbing your right leg) are negligible. The plastic is mainly on the door and center console and makes clean up of spills and dirt a lot easier that if they were covered in expensive leather. Overall a nice riding car with plenty of room, a large trunk, and a body that does not look like every other car on the road. Oh yeah, I am averaging 39 mpg!

With 40,000 km on my HighLine Jetta so far , I am extremely pleased. I had one hiccup one day for 3 minutes(which I fixed myself) and otherwise the car has been flawless. The ride is amazingly quiet at highway speeds Most comfortable seats on the planet, Has every tech option available today, Cabin is very elegant with soft touch materials everywhere, Stereo is awesome (Beats), Screen is nicely built into the centre dash and not stuck on top like so many seem to do these days like it was an afterthought. 15,000 km between oil services. An 8 speed transmission that shifts as quick as a DCT without the expensive service intervals that a DCT requires. It might burn 1/5th of a litre oil between oil changes (which is perfect. You won't have to add oil) Center console is not intrusive to leg room like Lexus. I am 6'2 and built like a line backer. This car punches above its class. WAY ABOVE !!

I love this car. Can get it up to 50mpg on the highway with the ac running. The lane keeping assist and acc are handy on long highway trips. The XDS from the gti is fun on the sport. The interior is clean, sharp, driver focused and you can get it with a manual! My few dislikes are no auto ac, and the suspension is a bit rough off-road.

This car is wonderful in many ways. It is petty around town and get's great gas mileage. I once got 50mpg on the way home from work and regularly get over 40mpg. It is commanding on the highway and petty around the city. The cup holders are a little small, but otherwise it is hard to beat.

I have had TWO 2021 jettas, the first one not even for 10k miles. It stopped driving and the fuel modules went out three times, then finally the engine ran out of oil while I was driving and ceased up for good. My second one which was a lemon replacement is starting to follow the pattern of the problems my first one had. Bad engine control module when it only had 500 miles on it. The SOS communication module is bad, and just today the engine light came on and cruise control stopped working. I don’t usually write reviews, but I’m astonished on how bad of a car the 2021 Jetta is. Avoid this year of the model at all costs.

First I want to say when we bought this car in 2022 there weren't many options available. At the dealer we bought this from it was the only one in stock and we needed to be out of our lease at the time. We bought the one and only on the lot which was the base Jetta S. I'll start with the good, this will be quick. I get really good gas mileage, upper 30's on average and can get upper 40's on the highways, there is plenty of power to get going and to pass slower drivers. Now to the bad. The tires are crap, it has power to move but the tires slip all the time, even on slower take offs they will spin. Wet roads? Be careful as the stock tires have no traction in the rain. The seats are uncomfortable for longer trips, the center console comes out too far into my right leg as I'm driving and is just annoying, the base radio is trash like old car kinda trash not the typical decent stock radios in most cars these days. It really sounds horrible. The rear brake pads wore out at only 24k miles which I have never seen in my 43 years of driving. My last car stock brakes lasted to well over 60k miles and I downshift going down hills to help my brake life. VW won't warranty them and I wasn't about to spend over $900 for them to replace the pads and the rotors so I did the job myself in my driveway.. I am also getting random electrical issues which of course random issues are hard to diagnose, if the issues don't happen when the car is at the dealer then you're out of luck. There is a nice hum going on driving down the road, I thought it may be a wheel bearing but the dealers assures me it's not and is suspecting the noise is coming from a tire or tires. I've never heard a noise like this from a tire either but I guess it could be and would be another negative to the already bad tires so that means spending more money for this low milage car. I regret buying this car and want to get something else. I will never buy a VW again.

Transmission - vehicle issues

Gerv, 01/01/2022

Got a grinding noise when accelerating from transmission around 30mph. Dealer says it's normal noise even though there is a class action lawsuit for earlier model Jettas with the same issue. Eventually leads to transmission fluid leaks and failure but I guess they don't want to warranty it. My remote start stopped working and the dealer replaced a car net module under warranty. There is a crackling noise coming from speakers when listening to talk radio on xm.. they replaced the amp but it didn't fix it...so they said it was normal operation and I haven't had that issue resolved either. Definitely not buying a VW again... I have had a new scion, multiple new Mazdas, new bmw, new range Rover, new Hyundai's. And have never had issues like this car. Unbelievable. This is all within first year of ownership and 20k miles

It's fun to drive and surprisingly peppy for a 1.4 liter engine. The interior looks/sounds good and the Infotainment system works well but the user instructions could be improved. Other possible improvements include the hood support, the trunk opening height, a more adjustable passenger seat (and motorized), and better access to the spare tire (not a short mileage one).

Transmission Issues on Brand new SEL

The car is a piece of junk after 2000 miles the transmission started acting up hard shifts especially when going from second gear to first. Very clunky and honestly terrible the dealer just says that it is a software issue and is pending a software update that was like 7 months ago the issue is still not resolved and it appears that they will just not do anything about it. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR just get a Honda or Toyota and spare yourself the terrible customer service and recurring issues.

I bought a brand new Jetta in 22 and sold my eight year old Elantra - what for a mistake - I was in the 17 month I have the Jetta now more in the service / repair shop then I was with the Elantra in all of the 8 years I had that car. Constantly something else is not working I’m very disappointed and would not recommend the VW Jetta

Jetta flawed acceleration

Ferriswheeler, 12/21/2023

14 of 29 people found this review helpful

2023 Jetta with manual transmission - ECU programming gives exaggerated acceleration delay to response from pedal input. During normal driving, after depressing the pedal and expecting the vehicle to accelerate accordingly, there is a delay of about two seconds before the vehicle suddenly and rapidly begins to accelerate. This presents two related safety concerns : The vehicle will not accelerate when needed to avoid an accident - the vehicle accelerates too rapidly after the delay, which has the potential to cause an accident if the vehicle cannot be slowed in time. Additionally, this repeated sudden and rapid acceleration and deceleration is likely to cause premature engine and drivetrain component wear/failure, as well as decrease fuel efficiency. Volkswagen told me the vehicle operates as intended. I'll pursue aftermarket ECU tuning software to correct this problem - which will cost several hundred dollars - and if that endeavor fails, I'll trade the Jetta for another Toyota. Either way, because of Volkswagen's response to my concern, this was the first and last Volkswagen I'll ever purchase.

I shopped for months for a new car. My top priorities were safety, gas mileage and reliability. Hit the jackpot on all 3 with my new Jetta! I've had 2 VWs before and I've always loved them. I was picking between a K5 and the Jetta. I loved the technology with the K5 but when I opened the door on the Jetta I could tell the difference immediately in quality. The doors were heavier on Jetta and just overall a better made car. Great warranty, love how it handles, sunroof, heated seats, it's a great car! Only thing I would wish for is wireless charging and wireless Apple CarPlay.

Inside is roomy with enough trunk space, touch screen unit and digital display are easy to navigate and fancy looking. I have base model so it comes with standard safety features blind spot, collision and backup camera. I wish they put leather heated seats and sunroof in base model.

We bought 2 brand new 2023 Jettas. Both of them have mechanical/electrical issues that the dealership could not fix. I don't recommend buying any VW model because besides the horrible poor quality they now have you will also be dealing with bad customer service. So Hondas and Toyotas are the best for sure when it comes to quality and service.

Noise from engine as I accelerate

My car has less than 300 miles on it and it is a month old. I've noticed that each time I accelerate onto a highway or high speed roadway- there is a weird noise that emanates from the engine between 25-30 MPH that last for a few seconds- metal on metal type of sound.

About 6 months ago I was looking at new cars and was deciding between this car and the honda accord. I went with the accord and got hit a few weeks ago and received the jetta as a rental. i’ve had the jetta for over a month and I absolutely hate it. The car drives like a tin can. The acceleration is horrible and the brakes are also not smooth to break on. If you are planning on getting this car beware that this car has no power so if you like getting some power then this car is not far you. It also drives particularly horrible on the highway. It is extremely hard to get any power on the highway, which makes highway driving difficult. Another thing I noticed is how cheap everything feels inside the car, don’t get me wrong it has great safety features inside, but it feels very plasticy and cheap. It is not a car I feel safe in or feel is reliable. It is not a smooth drive at all! I am so glad this is only a rental car because I would have regretted actually buying this car very much.

I extensively test drove the GLI…nice looking car. For me the engine noise and the road noise was not acceptable. It is German engineered but definitely cheapened by pretty stark interior design. The radio is, well, worse than an old Hyundai. I ended finding a gorgeous Camry SE for $2000 less. Toyota quality, it can’t be beat.

No power. 8-speed transmission is wrong (again).

Only "fun to drive" is manual transmission. The Auto transmission will look for the right gear.... then it will look for V6 engine. On previous models , with less than 8 gears , you would hear the metal knock when you are slowing down. Vw fixed that noise with new gear box. Jetta 2020/2021 models is weak (Marketing slogan "yes it is ugly but it gets great gas mileage is still working after 70 years. Yes, if you put 1.0 L engine the economy will be 50 mpg) and the sales people will drive you around the block.Highway "will concur" the power is not there. Car without such power is not safe to drive on US highways. No acceleration... enjoy 35 mpg speed limits. Exterior "design" is nothing special. Same 15 yo style (budget classics?). Check dealer's mechanic shop while you are waiting for your new Jetta and dealer's reviews; usually they (reviews) are low because reliability and service are low, while Korean car makers are on the top of reliability and "car wanting" charts. I'd say - VW is dead. I leased previous 2 VWs and turned them both back after 24 months. I am looking for a cheap car, nothing fancy. VW dealers in Utah advertised $14500 for a Jetta but after a few things (they forgot to remove $2000 in intensives and add down payment), you are looking at $17500 Jetta (no style or reliability). What's the next cheap brand? Nissan Altima 2021 is very nice.

This is my third Jetta, a 2023 Sport. Sadly, the rear pads and rotors need to be replaced after only 13,000 miles. Deal cost is over $600, and it's pretty ridiculous to be replacing brakes at almost every oil change. I drive really mellow to save gas, use the engine to downshift when possible, and have mainly freeway miles. I wrote VW and they said they won't cover it. There must have been issues with these because they issued an extended warranty on brake pads for 2 years or 24,000 miles, but I came in for service 2 months too late. I miss my 2016 Jetta that got better MPG, had no hesitation on acceleration like the 2023, and the brakes lasted about 40k miles. The steering was also more responsive than the new design in my opinion. The new design for the air vents / AC is also poorly placed. There's no way to get it positioned to a comfortable place, and definitely not if you're trying to adjust it for passengers as well. I'm glad I got a deal on mine, and it's still one of the best for the cost, but not after you factor in the crazy repair costs. I'll be doing my own repairs as much as I can after this, and probably buying aftermarket parts because the VW OEM have gone downhill in the last 10 years.

I’ve had nothing but problems with mine since I bought it the steering issues, the staring keep stepping up to the right I would turn and then the steering wheel just stiff and I couldn’t do anything else with it. I would be driving down the freeway, and then my stain would stiffen and then dirt to the right or I almost hit a couple of big rigs. It scared the crap out of me. I took it to VW and they tell him they can’t find nothing wrong with it. They said it’s just the line assist even though the line is off. I turned it off because I don’t like it. Has anybody else had any issues with this because I’m terrified to drive it now please help.

I love the Jetta. I got my first one in late 2018 when the new model came out. Lease came up in December and so I got another one. It is amazing. I call it Audi Light. It is peppy responsive and fun. It is comfortable and I feel like my family and I are safe in it. It is sturdy feeling.
