I bought this as a 2nd family car in case I need to haul my 3 kids. It has plenty of room for them. I'm 6'2 and I can fit in the backseat without rubbing my head on the roof. I like it because of the fun factor. It handles great and has plenty of power to get you in and out of traffic. The acceleration isn't bad. Cabin noise is minimal but you do notice when you're going around 60 with the radio off. The interior is not bad but it could be better. It is a bit plasticky. The instrument cluster is kind of bland. If you can afford it get the autobahn edition, it has the virtual cockpit. I got the 35th anniversary edition because of the transmission. I do like the android auto and the voice control commands. One thing I have against it is the front seat isn't that comfortable. Not sure I would want to take a long trip in it. The ride quality is pretty good, better than the mustang I had. I use premium non-ethanol gas and I'm averaging 28 mpg which is mostly in town. Took it on a 2 hour trip, all interstate and was averaging 38 mpg in comfort mode. One big selling point was the 6 year/72,000 mile warranty and oil changes every 10k miles or once per year whichever comes first. Anyway, if you're a good negotiator you can get a new one for 24k, maybe less. Test drive a few of the competitors. If you want to drive what everyone else does get a Honda or Toyota but if you want to stand out get the Jetta GLI. Update 5/14/20 - As of this post, I've had the car 9 months. I've put 5400 miles on it. No problems to report. Just had an oil change. I did notice the oil was about a quart low before I took it in. This is normal for new engines as they tend to burn a little oil when they're being broken in. Anyway, the car is still fine. The handling is nice, acceleration is good, infotainment is great when paired with android auto. One major concern, for me at least, is the resale value. Not much I can do about that. Also, just want to add that I typically drive less than 9k miles per year. I use the car for short commutes, errands and the occasional trip out of town. Would I buy the car again? Probably not. I don't hate the car but I'm not in love with it either. Hindsight is 20/20 and no one can predict the future. With this pandemic going on and working from home, I would have just kept my old car. Trading the car in now makes little financial sense as I would lose $5k or $6k. And since we're not driving much, there's no point in getting something else. 10/12/20 - I've had the car for over a year now and it has 6800 miles on it. Nothing new to report really. Car is still running great. Occasionally I've had people compliment the car and ask questions, which is kinda surprising. It's not a bad looking ride, I think the roof could be a little more sloped in the back to give it a more sporty look. Anyway, I'll probably keep the car until the warranty runs out lol 4/22/2022 - well I've had the car for almost 3 years now. Really nothing new to report. Car has slightly more than 10k miles and all that has been done is basic maintenance like oil changes and they did clean the heads. These direct injection motors get carbon build up but it wasn't expensive. Around $70 at the dealership. Car still runs and drives like new.

I love this car. I've been driving it for 4 months now, and I still get that new car buzz when I take off. Roomy (for a small sedan) and uncluttered cabin with nice tech touches. Sporty and nimble as hell performance. Quick acceleration and smooth ride, even at higher speeds. Almost a GTI in those regards. Looks like a serious, sophisticated sedan in the European tradition, but with just a hint of American muscle-car-style flair. A wolf in sheep's clothing. UPDATE: 15 months in and I still love this car.

Easy to live with, good mpg, suspension DCC upgrade from Audi gives you a range of different driving modes that dramatically change from comfort to sport mode. Design inside and out is very minimalist but also gorgeous lines mistaking people that take it for an Audi. New generation has more leg room in the front and back seat than previous generation. Has great safety and entertainment features. Apple car play...etc... It also has launch control mode when you want to launch the car... The rims and blacked out rims, roof, mirror caps, and spoiler is gorgeous. Great sports car for the money.

Worth every discounted penny! - Update: grrr!

It's hard to write a brief review of a car that has so much to offer! I bought a leftover 2019 model in March to replace an expired lease vehicle to serve as my second car (work commuter). The discount was absolutely absurd (roughly 21k out the door), which made it hard to pass up. I was looking for something relatively inexpensive that got decent gas mileage, was practical, and didn't have the driving dynamics of a horse drawn carriage. This car has completely blown through those requirements. My daily drive is roughly 30 miles through a mix of two lane country roads and four lane town highways. If I am responsible, I average around 39 mpg. Even with a heavy foot I seldom see that number dip below 33 - which is a good thing given how much fun this car can be to drive in a lively fashion. The 2.0 turbo has more than enough power to make this car way more entertaining than a family hauler should have any right to be. The six speed manual is a joy to row through the gears, and the clutch provides just enough resistance to give decent feedback. Steering is crisp and spot on, and the suspension is more than up to the task of balancing sport/comfort duties. The short list of complaints has more to do with the fact I got the base "S" model than being a shortcoming of the car. There is no Sirius XM or CD player in the base model, and the sound system is extremely anemic. Those issues can be addressed by shelling out a few more dollars for the Autobahn version - but that impacts the value proposition. Aside from that, the seats could be a little more supportive, the interior plastic trim is a little cheap, and there can be a bit of road noise depending upon the quality of the highway surface. That's it - no other complaints! If you are in the market for a reasonably priced sport sedan, you owe it to yourself to at least test drive a GLI. It has a mature appearance, gets great gas mileage, serves as a practical family hauler when needed, accelerates way above its weight class, and is an overall hoot to drive. Keep an eye out for factory/dealer incentives and you can get a real steal on this car. This is my first experience with Volkswagen, but if the first 4000 miles in this car are any indication of the future I will be a returning customer when the time comes for the next replacement. UPDATE: I have had the car now for 15 months and 13k miles. It is still a blast to drive and getting great gas mileage, but has been in the shop for a total of 7 weeks for recurring P2402 fault codes and a fuel leak at the evap canister. The work was covered under warranty, but extremely aggravating to repeatedly have the same problem. A couple other issues have arisen that the warranty did not cover: the "GLI" badge on the front grille fell off, and the lip spoiler on the trunk lid cracked completely through perpendicularly. It has been nearly three weeks since the last fuel leak/P2402 repairs without a check engine light - the longest it has gone in 6 months. If it weren't for the absolutely joyful driving dynamics of this car, I would have explored the legal avenues of returning the vehicle to VWoA. Assuming there are no further issues (fingers crossed), I will gladly continue driving this car for the next several years as; recent issues aside, it still does a better job of checking the previously identified "wants" than anything else on the market. Unfortunately, I will plan to trade this in prior to the expiration of the warranty. There is just enough concern with reliability that I can't make a solid business case to keep this once I am on the hook for all repairs. I don't know that I would warn anyone away from purchasing or leasing a VW, but I certainly wouldn't provide unsolicited recommendations, either. It's a shame, really - since I had such great expectations after the first several months. Take the review for what it's worth?

Good all round value, yet fun to drive

At 25-29k this vehicle serves as an affordable and responsible family car that can also serve as a sporty daily driver. All new for 2019 on a better chassis, better suspension and handling hardware, upgraded disk brakes, and increased horse power and torque in the 2.0 turbo, this Jetta GLI S, has just the right amount of everything for the price; passenger space, cargo capacity, horse power, manuvering, MPGs. I opted for the 6 speed manual and am enjoying it with better than reported MPGs. This vehicle has a satisfying, yet not overwhelming amount of tech and safety features. My GLI S base model has cloth seats and frankly after two leather seat vehicles, I dont miss the leather or sport bolsters as with these cloth seats I don't slide on the curvy mountain our roads I commute daily. Many reviews complain about some harder plastic surfaces, but I see an elegant, just enough interior design with a classy VW look to it, that will be easy to maintain. The trunk shelf is too reflective and shows in rear window sometimes however. When comparing this with other cars one has to be careful that the comparisons are fair by remembering the price, it's tempting to compare it to mid sized sedans or luxury cars because it offers as much in many ways. I need a car that can excellerate well uphill to merge onto mountain interstates this GLI does it well. The steering and handling are nice and crisp and can be tweaked with several drive modes including a user defined custom setting. Not a gutless wonder by any means however with proper technique this car can be responsibly green (or blue), and includes a feedback display to help increase/optimize MPGs, a nice feature in a car that can carry five comfortably with luggage. The Cargo Mat system is wonderful. My 2011 Tiguan has it and so does this GLI. My groceries don't get flung about and take home boxes arrive home well. Flower pots and arrangements as well as tool boxes and such are all orderly passengers with the cargo mat and dividers. The exterior styling to my eyes is a bit more mature and sophisticated than the competition, many of which appear to be marketed to teenagers, yet at the same time the styling is modern and assertive. This is especially apparent in the hood and grills as well as the lines that make their way to the rear. The LED head lamps are wonderful. If you want even more look at the middle and upper trim levels which offer many more luxuries for not much more cost making then great values as well.

Something like this only comes around in the industry once every few years. VW nailed it with the new GLI. The fun factor is off the charts, especially in this price range. They struck a perfect balance between sporty and luxury, practical and exciting. Except for adding vents and a couple of USB ports in the rear seat area there isn’t anything I would change about this vehicle. If you are in the market for a sporty sedan do yourself a favor and check out the VW GLI. Update: Over 2 years in and I still love this vehicle! Not a single problem and still drives as nice as the day I bought it.

All the Tech You need & Fun to Drive

Alot of reviews say the interior is and tech is behind but that is incorrect. The 2020 Autobahn gives you plenty of it tech you need in a performance sedan and unlike the others in the segment there are ZERO rattles on the interior and cabin is silent down highway. It is what made me choose the GLI over over all the others I test drove.

Love my GLI! Glad VW still offer cars with a stick. Not only is comfortable to drive it’s fun to drive. With the turbo it’s got Way more power than I expected, fun when it kicks in. 33mpg rated on the highway is a huge understatement! I’m getting closer to 38. So much fun to drive!

Listen...I know I got a lemon. VW had to take it back as part of a settlement. But in 19,000 miles, it went into the VW shop over a dozen times. Multiple wiper failures, infotainment failures, interior trim falling off or breaking loose, violent idling - it was at the point when Google Maps fired up after work, it gave me the choice of Home or the VW dealer! That's how often my car was there. I had the base S trim, but the Autobahn trim wouldn't have changed the score too much - it would have given me more things that would have broken. The negatives are correct - the interior trim, especially on the doors and parts of the dash is just hollow, hard, easy to scratch plastic that wouldn't be used on a kid's toy. The base stereo should have been rejected years ago. Android Auto linking up was a 50/50 shot. The standard all-season tires were lousy in fun driving and downright scary in snow and rain. And the quality issues that others have written about would have me hitting pause on another VW. The the positives are true as well. This is a very roomy and comfortable car. Four adults will fit without feeling cramped. Plenty of storage space in the interior. Very easy to use controls and infotainment system. Excellent fuel economy - I was seeing over 40mpg on long highway drives. The DSG is one of the better dual clutch transmissions out there with none of the lurching and bogging in traffic that other DCTs have. It's quick and comfortable, and has its own sense of style in a very conservative suit. The Pure Gray optional paint color was very sharp as well. But I just can't get past the quality issues. I had so many loaners and service trips and repairs fail on me hours after picking up the car from the last failure. If you're interested in this model, especially a used one, really have someone look it over carefully to make sure there are no gremlins waiting for you down the road.

Cheap Audi, but with a manual!!!

I have owned 7 VW’s so full disclosure, I am slightly biased. That said, I have driven the competition and, as usual, nothing really compares to a VW for the money. As at least one other reviewer stated, the tech is totally fine. They did cheap out in the back, but that’s one of the reasons it’s roughly $6000 cheaper than a comparable Gti. The Gti by the way, does handle better, but at the expense of being able to have two full size adults travel in the back seat, which I really needed. Plus more space in the trunk. The adjustable suspension is awesome and really does make a big difference between the soft and sport settings. The Gli is actually pretty fast, and my recommendation, immediately replace the Falken tires. I unfortunately, was stuck with the all season touring tires, which are truly terrible in all conditions. I replaced them at 900 miles with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires. Yes, they are $80 or so dollars more than the Falkens, and easily worth every penny. In fact, regardless of what you drive, put the Pilot Sport 4S’s on in the summer, transformative experience. I always use dedicated winter tires. The brakes really are phenomenal, with great feel! And with the Michelin’s on there, you can pretty much do what you want. Gas mileage on the highway is easily mid 30’s. It is hard to keep off the gas though on back roads. It is truly an attractive, fairly quick, excellent handling and reasonably priced, small German sports sedan that you can get with a manual! And it is worth it! The Honda is a great car, but it’s not the same. Nothing drives like a German car. This one is no exception.

Great Ride, Poor VW Car Net

I purchased my Jetta GLI S in 10/2020. Manual transmission, great acceleration, plenty of passenger room. Large trunk. A fun car to drive. I have 5,000 miles on the vehicle and the VW car net app stopped working- the microphone stopped working so I cannot make hands free calls or use voice control. I took it to my dealership and was advised several customers have had this occur recently, but unfortunately VW doesn't have a software update yet. "They are working on it". It may seem like a minor complaint, but you cannot answer your phone if you are plugged in the USB port and enjoying Sirius XM, using Google Maps, etc.. Doing some research, I discovered it happens with several 2020/2021 VW models.

This car is so underrated. If you are looking for a performance sedan the value is incredible. Real leather comfortable seats that are heated AND cooled. Get the autobahn version. Great sound system, console is turned toward driver for better ergonomics, digital fully customizable dash taken from Audi, 8 inch screen for infotainment and super smooth swipes, good good interior lighting which you have to see to believe, the list goes on and on. Most cars in this segment do not have all the amenities this car has! Rain sensing wipers, a really powerful engine which can be tuned without voiding the warranty to 290 HP and 220 Torque. Power driver seat with 3 person memory. Apple CarPlay. It’s a steal for the price! Have owned many Jettas but this one is special. Really really worth it!

VW interior finish and feel is great. You close the door and you feel you are in a solid car. The driver display is great. The drive options (DSG) gear box to normal automatic driving is a pleasure. The only two things I do not get is why not have the clock on the dashboard and why is the USB port in a tight spot?

Fast, fun car for everyday driving. Got the Autobahn edition and love the safety, CarPlay, digital dashboard, ventilated seats, and practical utility. Lots of passenger and trunk space for a sedan. I live in FL and drive it to PA once a year. Get 38 MPG on the long trip. Also the seats are terrific over this long journey. I used to get a back ache along the way with the 3 series BMW I used to have. It also has a fabulous climate control system. It handles the hot humid weather easily. My biggest gripe is the lack of adjustment available for the front passenger seat. My wife hates riding in it, likes to drive it. The interior has some hard surfaces . VW could increase the appeal of this car with a few more touches. That said, I enjoy driving the car for trips long and short. It’s a bargain if you want a capable sports sedan.

A test drive will tell you this is a roomy, driver's, performance sedan. My Biggest complaint is the poor audio quality of the Beats sound system. This Very low fidelity Scratchy nasally buzzy system should be Embarrassing for VW. Otherwise no issues so far. The DSG and drive modes give this car multiple personalities. 12/4/20 Besides listening critically to the Beats audio system carefully before you buy, listen to the noise if it has the Hankook tires. Also gauge the ride quality. You may want to upgrade the tire choice before or after you make the purchase. 6/7/21: 30,000 miles and no quality problems at all. 6/8/23: 2019 GLI, 64,000 miles with no quality or reliability problems at all.

Great sporty car. Just picked up a 2019 pure white S with the DSG. Car is awesome! I haven't really got on it as I'm still in the "break in" period (at 600 miles). I really everything about this car from it's looks to it's performance. I sold my 2007 FA5 Si back in 2012 and have been wanting to get back into a sporty sedan ever since. This VW feels so solid and is a step above the current Si in performance and looks. As far as reliability, well only time will tell. I did drop it down 1 star due to there only being 3 option choices. I chose the S for a few reasons. I didn't want the 35th because of the wheels and blacked out roof and side mirrors as I am 45yrs old and it looked for younger folks. The Autobahn was a little more and wasn't wanting black leather as I live in SoCal Inland Empire and the Summers here see quite a few 100+ degree days. I with there was an option for options lol. I would like to have added to sunroof to my S. I will be back to update in the years to come.

I own the 2020 GLI Autobahn edition with the back package, i love how the car looks, it’s much more powerful than I anticipated with loooots of room and aftermarket options for more power and sound. The all digital displays angle around the driver to make you feel like a pilot. The car is a blast to drive which makes it hard to stay out of the pedal. I love the VW Net app which makes it a breeze to lock the doors if you forget, or even start the car as you are hopping out of the shower getting ready for work!

Best thing for the money

Glad it has 3 pedals still. Overall, there’s not much to dislike at this price, so I will only list my gripes. It’s a pretty good car. - I’m a bit mad I paid all the extra money for the autobahn solely for the better stereo and nothing else and it sounds pretty terrible. -The headlights are rather poor and there’s no fog lights you can add either oe or aftermarket -The driver seat bottom doesn’t seem to quite align with the seat back just right. It’s not that uncomfortable, but I find myself having to throw my left leg over the bolster once I reach cruising speed for best comfort which I’ve never had to do in any car. I drive probably five cars a day on average. -Clutch travel is unnecessarily long and can make smooth driving take a little effort -Second gear rolling stops don’t go over well. Anything under 10mph in second it doesn’t like

Front wheel drive, awesome acceleration and a quick shifting transmission make this car amazing. The seats could be better in the S trim but that isn’t important when you are getting thrusted into the back of the seat at full throttle. Meanwhile the car is looking amazing with all of its well placed lines and the sweet hood that make it look sleek and sporty. When you aren’t enjoying the seat of the pants feel you can get around 34 mpgs on the highway while using your blind spot monitoring system to keep you safe on your trip. At night I can see so much further with the bright headlights and I can now see the deer on the side of the road. Instead of worrying about them just jumping out in front of me. Overall I don’t know why someone wouldn’t want this car it packs a punch in every category that I can think of and don’t get me started on the big trunk and all the seating space. 2/26/22: The car could be great. However the fuel line rattle that can’t be fixed is obnoxious. My door latch was freezing for the longest time. Causing the car to turn on the e-brake when coasting to a stop. Yeah that was a lot of fun. It took four applications of WD-40 to fix it. The threads are coming out of my drivers side seat cushion cover, again. The rear window defroster doesn’t get hot enough to melt ice all the way. The windshield wipers ice over whenever I’m driving because they don’t have a heat source. They rest below the front window defroster. The side view mirrors seem to catch every type of headlights behind you. Which directs it right back into your face. The rear e-brake is stuck on every morning making a loud pop noise when leaving. Under the front seats has a weird goo building up from the rear air vents under the seats. The performance of the car is great but everything else kinda adds up after a while.

VW makes a fun car to lease, not own. The 5 yr bumpervto bumper warranty was a must because of the serious negative rep VW had with previous models. Many parts are not available in the aftermarket and VW was a thief when it came to pricing even simple parts. Don't be sucked in by the warranty and the purposely misleading marketing. You dont want to own this after 5 yrs. You'll go broke. Remember- these guys scammed us on the emissions issue.

Coming from the 2018 Jetta se. this car is a different beast. With all the bells and whistles you could want the car is responsive, has great handling, and can keep up with other cars. Now the steering is tight but I feel like it can be a bit over the top as the traction is not as good as an all-wheel drive car when going around hard turns at speed you can feel the car skip a little and that is reflected in the steering. Other than that the car is great.

Tall cups are an issue when you are shifting but not a deal killer. Lots of pep when the turbo kicks in. I have put 800 miles on mine an love it. Traded in a 2010 Jetta manual that was fun to drive.
