2005 Subaru Baja
I've had a number of Baja Turbo's, manual of course. I'd buy one and when I found a nicer one I'd buy that and sell the old one. Call me crazy but I've done this about 10 times. In 2022 I bought a showroom condition 2003 yellow baja with 24k miles on it and is showroom condition. I sold it, as nice as it was, because it was an automatic. My keeper is a 2005 Turbo w/manual. The turbo … manuals did not come with automatic seats so I switched it out with one of my others before I sold it. It's now, 2024 and I have 67000 miles on it. Never seen salt and intend to keep it that way. The car is a BLAST to drive. Keep your oil changed routinely and, if you have a turbo, have the banjo filter REMOVED. It's the primary cause of turbo failure. Filter screen is too tightly woven, gets clogged and starves the turbo of oil. Also, get your radiator flushed every 60k or so. No problem with head gaskets on the turbo models as they used a different head gasket on them. If you've got a normally aspirated Baja it's even more important to keep your radiator fluid fresh by flushing every 3 to 5 years. Failure to do so is a primary contributor to head gasket failure on these cars.
Subaru dropped the Baja in 2006 just before gas prices went through the roof and several other manufacturers either discontinued production of their small trucks or were about to. Had they stayed in the game and did just a little bit of marketing I'm convinced they'd still be making them today. Hyundai now has a near clone that is still selling over MSRP as dealers can't keep the Santa Cruz in stock. Subaru has missed the boat, handing over sales on a platter to Hyundai. A similar model, if made by Subaru, would have been even more successful, simply because it is a Subaru. Every Baja I've had sold for more than I paid for it. They hold their value extremely well. They hold their value and many with the lower mileage are appreciating in value. Don't buy a near 20 year old Baja that's been driven in the salt belts. After a couple of decades these cars will have rust issues, particularly in the rear wheel well area. Buy a salt free car and you've got it made. I love cars, own a number of them and this would be the last one I'd sell. Guess I'd have to give the Baja Five Stars.
