I'm a first-time crossover owner who traded in my beloved 2017 Ford Fiesta ST toward a '23 CX-5 Carbon Edition. Several people I know have CX-5s and are thrilled with them, so I already knew I liked the car's looks, interior styling and comfort, and high level of quality. I needed a larger, more practical vehicle than the tiny, not-so-comfortable ST, plus I wanted AWD. I didn't need … maximum interior/cargo space and was willing to sacrifice a bit of fuel economy (unwilling to get on a long waiting list for a Honda or Toyota hybrid), so the Mazda was the obvious choice.
I figured I'd be sacrificing a lot of driving enjoyment moving from a great hot hatch to the CX-5. When I test drove the CX-5, I expected it to be good, but nothing that special. But I found it really great to drive from the get-go, and since then, I've been blown away with how fun it is to drive, even on twisty roads.
Obviously, it's not nearly as quick (I have the base engine) or capable as a Fiesta ST, but it doesn't drive at all like a "trucklet" or utilitarian vehicle--it's more like a sports sedan. The steering weight and feel is excellent--I prefer it to the ST's steering, surprisingly--and the handling and overall body control (it looks like it's sitting high on its suspension but it doesn't have nearly as much body roll as you'd expect) makes it very confidence-inspiring. Yet it's stable and relaxing on the freeway, and compliant in town—the ride is firm on bad roads but not uncomfortable.
The base engine's power is fine--the turbo would be nice but it didn't seem worth $6-7K more. The six-speed automatic (hooray, no CVT!) works well and is quite good in manual mode when I want a bit more responsiveness. My gas mileage has been pretty close to the EPA estimates; on one mostly highway road trip, I averaged 31.7 mpg, which isn't bad, but unlike some cars, don't expect it to beat its highway estimated mpg by a lot. Given its just-OK gas mileage, a bigger fuel tank would be nice--its range between fill-ups isn't great.
I have 6K+ miles on it now and it's been perfect--no issues or annoyances. I've heard a few reviewers complain about the seats, saying they're too firm, but I find them very supportive and comfortable on longer trips. Passengers seem really happy in the car--it's a good place to spend time.
Some of Mazda's safety nannies I could live without, but they can be largely disabled. And not everyone likes the infotainment system's lack of a touchscreen, but I like the rotary knob, which feels good and works well. Apple CarPlay works great in the Mazda (it could be erratic in my Ford), although its interface isn't as suited to the rotary knob.
Otherwise, I couldn't be happier with my CX-5, and even though it's a model that's been out for a long time, I still get a kick out of its looks, especially in the "polymetal gray" (really more of a blue) of the Carbon Edition. I'd recommend this car without hesitation. It probably won't be around too much longer, but for now, it still seems like the sweet spot in Mazda's CUV/SUV lineup.
