2023 Mazda CX-5
I had a 22 Carbon Edition which was one of the first that model year with new transmission tweaks etc and it had some kinks in the transmission software , which i discussed in that review and at 20K traded it in for a 2023 CX-5 Premium with Bose speakers , Paddle Shifters, Analog Instrument Cluster , +50 Mile range ,smaller grill , still has 19" rims but different style . This car suited … us better as we picked Rohidium White which is Mazdas only color costing an additional $599 - Has a pearl tint to it . So the vehicle was much lower key and drew less attention . We Liked that - Most of all it seemed that Mazda had spent time making sure the 6speed transmission was like silk in shift transitions , amazing really even from day 1 not broken in , the whole vehicle compared to the 22 was just , more refined , the engine was smooth even with regular gas , and the suspension was clearly in my opinion different/ better. It was solid , and firm , the whole vehicle seems to be one well put together ride - Like no other Mazda Ive driven - I like my old GT3 Hatchback from 2010 but thats like a go cart -- different animal - The CX5 is German-esque in solid handling and power delivery- giving me the sense that I knew what it would do with confidence and I needed to learn how to get the most out of it which is and was fun. Its fun to drive - lots of fun ! Pin drop quiet inside even at freeway speeds. I dislike the infotainment system which is confusing having to much stuff in one place and its confounding --I wish I had a radio with a simple dial -- yes it has that setting , but requires many pathways - yikes - Mazda builds an unbelievable vehicle interior as well - Ive had many German vehicles and I must say this is right there and better in many ways -- Its hard to believe for the $$ - Its so good that the infotainment system is forgotten - Its that good - There is nothing in its class or the next that comes close - I looked at the Rav4 - and well - you look and drive it -My big love of Mazda comes from the fact that they are a lone company that still makes a traditional car and took it to the apotheosis of engineering possible to compete with high mileage hybrids - They still make a real combustion engine only , with a real 6 speed transmission ,,,not CVT , No Hybrid , Just the real deal - and its reflected it the cost - Mazda Made the skyactive system efficient by building an engine thats built like a diesel with a 13:1 compression ratio and cylinder deactivation which you can watch on the screen - Its extremely reliable and the 2 outside pistons stop burning gas and the 2 inboard are powering the vehicle at high freeway speeds, no hiccups ,totally unnoticeable except in gas mileage which all CX5 only come in 4WD and even then I can get 32-35mpg on flat freeways and thats very good ! Some people want a Hybrid , so we will see, personally I dont think paying another 25-30K for a hybrid dosent make fiscal sense in $/mile savings overall- , Mazda may be suffering from a bit of an identity crisis , as it was once a boutique car company in which no two models even looked like they were made by the same company , As if there were designers who had free rein to craft each car as they saw fit -- Then 2013 - They all got a grill thats the same and they all have similar cosmetic traits to bond the vehicles to Mazdas brand - I think they need to decide... are we a " sports car " company or a luxury sport or luxury company ? I think Mazda needs to define itself and get the word out -- Few people are aware of Mazdas and their reputation , and now the first year they took #1 in reliability over Toyota ! Thats Huge , But Toyota sells about 2 Million units in the USA and Mazda around 300K so about a 1/10th+ as many cars - So the CX-5 is great for a two people with a dog , or one or two kids , But could be tight with 4 big adults and 5 medium would be also tight -- but I dont want it any bigger - I think the buyers dont either - Its a winner green flag to checkered flag !!! I wish Mazda would build the turbo CX-5 with a stick shift -- would sell out - If you like traditionally built vehicles without batteries and electric engines --Get a Mazda --as soon they wont have them anymore either - my opinion of course
