We recently purchased a used Toyota minivan from Acura of Boston, and although I like the van, I was disappointed with the experience there for several reasons. Originally we were planning on trading in our older minivan towards this vehicle. We were offered $500 for the trade-in. When we said we were going to finance through our credit union, we were offered $1000 for our trade-in if we would let them get our financing. Justin, our sales person, told us that they would find us the best rate and that although they didn’t work with our credit union, they worked with DCU. When we went to sign the paperwork, they had financed us through Bank of America at a rate of 6.69%. I thought this was high, but figured I could always refinance the loan through my credit union in a few months. When we changed our mind about the trade-in, the dealership was able to stop the loan in process and we then financed the loan through our credit union at a rate of 3.49%. This will save us approximately $1500 over the life of the loan, and we only financed half the purchase price. When we test drove the vehicle, the low tire pressure warning light was on. After the test drive, the vehicle’s tires were checked and what I was told was that all the tires were low due to the weather recently turning colder. I accepted this as I know this happens. Just shy of 2 weeks later, the low tire pressure light was back on. I checked the tires and only one was low on pressure. When I brought it to my local tire dealer to see if it could be repaired, it was leaking around the valve stem. Maybe this leak occurred in the last several days, but I’m skeptical that it wasn’t the reason for the low tire pressure warning light being on when we test drove the vehicle. Justin told us that if there was anything wrong with the vehicle we could bring it back and have it fixed. The person who did our paperwork and arranged for the “best” financing told us that if there was anything wrong that was a safety issue, the dealership would fix it, which they have to do by law. Nothing else would be fixed since we weren’t purchasing an extended warranty. When I pushed, mentioning that it was a fairly short test drive and asked if we found something wrong in the first couple weeks we had the vehicle if they would fix it, he reluctantly said yes, they would repair it in good faith. I was wrong to accept that this was the truth and should have gotten it in writing. When we picked up the vehicle, it was raining. The vehicle’s rain sensing wiper function did not work, although both the low and high speed settings do. When I called the dealership the day after we picked up the vehicle, they told me that since it wasn’t a safety issue, they would not fix the wipers. We bought our older minivan used from Toyota of Watertown, just 3 miles away from Acura of Boston. The air conditioning wasn’t working when we test drove that van, and the dealership recharged it for us before we picked it up. After a couple weeks, the air conditioning wasn’t working again. Toyota of Watertown fixed it for free and also gave me a loaner car for the time the van was in their shop. Unfortunately, this time around they didn’t have any used minivans on their lot; otherwise I would have bought from them as they stand behind the used vehicles they sell. I have bought several used vehicles over the years, and the few that have had issues have been repaired by the selling dealership. So although I do like the van, I was lied to more than once, I had to pay to get the tire repaired and will have to pay to get the rain sensing wipers repaired as well after having the vehicle for fewer than two weeks. Fortunately I haven’t found anything else wrong yet, although I haven’t had my mechanic give it the once over. I will never purchase a vehicle from them again, used or new, as they weren’t honest with me and did not stand behind the used vehicle we purchased for over $30,000.

Dealer Review:

I was sorely disappointed with my treatment by the dealership two weeks ago. I was convinced by a salesman to come in and buy a car. We had a deal basically worked out pending the condition of my trade (which passed inspection based on its condition) and a few small odds and ends of the deal. I was going to purchase a Toyota Rav4 Hybrid LE to be built on 2/7. Upon arriving at the dealership, I was informed that they do not accept outside financing (my credit union is the best and has treated me quite well over the years), the car I came to purchase was already sold, and worst of all, that the price that I was supposed to get for my trade-in that was discussed over the phone (by text) was "misquoted" using "last month's information" (I had been quoted that in the morning, and then was offered $2000 less in the afternoon, classic bait and switch) from which I was assured by my salesman that the used car manager had already researched my car based on vin number, clear pictures, and a very detailed description (even including tire measurements I sent to him) before I drove all the way up there. The discrepancy between KBB (and NADA) value and what I was offered, was about $4000. I left the dealership angry and disappointed. We had a deal worked out and I was ready to hold up my end (even though I was offered less than multiple book values), but was told things that were completely untrue. This was either deliberate business malpractice or just people not knowing what they were doing or talking about. Either way, after being reassured that the deal we worked out was legitimate, I drove up there on a Saturday evening and missed out on family time for nothing but wasted fuel. Then, I was called by a robocall/prerecorded message asking me to come back in the dealership to see what they could do. I reached out the man on the call, and did not get a call back. So I reached out to the manager who then got the other gentleman to call me back. We discussed the situation and he said he would get back to me after “crunching the numbers”. Several days later, he did not get back to me until I emailed and left a voicemail. Turns out, no numbers were crunched and their original extremely lowball offer on my trade remained. I believe a deal is a deal. This dealership did not mess up in one way, multiple people were guilty of mistreating an enthusiastic customer who was ready to buy a car and instead is now resuming my search for a vehicle. I am not one to write bad reviews, but I felt others should know about my experience in the hopes that they might have a better experience, or steer clear and find an honest dealer.
