Eye Catcher Still in 2022
I have owned the car since 2003. I paid 3900 for it then with under 100,000 miles on it. I feel like it was a steal. It's hard to find a car like this in original condition without mods. Been offered a lot more for the car. Fun to drive. People still turn heads to see the car. Some don’t know what kind of car it is. 32 years old. These cars keep going up in price. When I get it out of the garage someone will ask if I like to sell. Will be in the Family for a long time hopefully.

1991 NA Toyota MR2 Manual: 5 Year Review Update
I bought this car after two others had previously owned it, both have which took excellent care of it. The car was in great condition, compared to some other MR2's that were on the market at the time. I drove several miles out to examine this other MR2 which the owner and I took into the mechanic shop to have a look at before I would decide whether to purchase it or not. It was not at all in good condition; however, I wanted the car so bad I was willing to throw thousands of dollars away in repairs. Do not make this mistake! Just be patient, the right car will come to you when its time. Anyways, I bought my car for 4k with a little over 140k miles on it. It drives wonderfully. The only things I would change is the sunroof to make it a T-top and change the steering to power-steering (the car was made without the power-steering). I have started working on changing out the speakers and installing newer ones. I have yet to make some more additional changes. I do however wish the car had more power to it, but it defiantly can go when you want it to. I highly recommend this car, it is very reliable. My dad is even happy with my purchase (since he is always very skeptical) and he loves it- he keeps asking me if I plan on getting rid of it so he can have it! (;

BEST OLD FERRARI YOU CAN ACTUALLY AFFORD
Car has 268,000 miles and was purchased with 230,000. Previous owner had receipts. I have driven the car with virtually no problems which is unheard of in a 19 year old car. Timing belt is non-interference so if it breaks it will not bend your valves. Air condition in a car this old usually does not work so I will have to fix that but car drives so well and handles so well you just can't find anything with looks this contemporary and Exotic for this fraction of a price. I paid $1800 cash in 2007. Repairs have been new alternator, new clutch, replaced radio & speakers, minor fix on t-top leaks, wheel alignment. That's nothing on a 19 year old car. I drive it daily & it turns heads always
Dream come true for performance lovers!
I bought this car back in 2006 without knowing anything about it. I saw it, loved the design and ever since then I cannot get enough of it. The turbo engine is a monster, recently replaced the CT26 with blown seals at 173K. Everything else on the car has kept up. I only drive it in the summer because the heavy rear makes it hard to drive in the snow. Besides they are rare to find without rust in the NE. My borther owns a miata and handling is as good or better. I agree with the comment on the synchros., they are weak for that year but with Penzoil synchromesh fluid the transmission is a dream (recommended). Overall amazing reliable vehicle.
MR2 Turbo
Bought the car in 2002. The MR2 is fast and fun to drive. Destined to become a classic!! When I am done with with it, it's going into long term storage!
Inexpensive Ferrari
Mid engine rear wheel drive. Fun to drive. Comfortable. A bit hard to get in and out of. Great seating and driving position. Perfect reach for controls. Great on gas if not under boost. A bit bumpy of a ride but is a genuine sports car. Reliable. Easy up keep and some what inexpensive for being a rear wheel drive car. Not recommended in the snow. Coolant hose will fail at around 100k. It's about 10 bucks but the turbo must be removed so that will cost you around 500 buck. Outside of that it's a great little sports car with great value and reliability. Hold it's value. Watch out for rust and stay away from modded or abused examples. Hard driving May damage syncros in transmission. Great car!
Made to be driven
This car is FUN to DRIVE. I once owned a 1985 MK1 N/A and I loved it. Put 100,000 miles on it, only work done was front brakes, timing belt and oil changes. Unfortunately, some women crashed into me and the car was totaled. Recently I have acquired a 1991 MR2 MK2 Turbo and I love it. These cars are just about driving pleasure. Don't know what else to say.

Looked at others but purchased this one
Before I sold my 300zx I needed to look for something else. Seems I found that the MR2 offered a hard to beat list of Positive features. I drove this car for the first time and lemme tell u that the HP pulls hard yet surpassingly the MR2 is great on fuel. Its design feature is what mainly sold me. That exotic lotus design sure turns heads. It has its downsides but surely.... The good outweighs the bad by far. Best advice I can give is take the car for a test drive and ull know what I mean.
TRUE POCKET ROCKET
so i bought my 1st mr2 turbo. 122k miles mint. love it. tight interior, but after awhile you forget about it. interior design is good. seats are comfy. driving position good. really no blind sides. handles great. very quick. sips fuel aslong as your not under boost. much more raw driving experience but not over bearing. not as smooth as the vw corrado but an approach all its own. car sit low so getting in and out is abit of a pain but a true car guy or gal would not mind. very happy with my purchase. UPDATE! Still fabulous to drive and own. Can't see myself selling it. I always look forward to driving it. So far besides oil, transmission cables needed adjustment....86 bucks. Starter went. Easy to do it yourself but I had a mechanic do it. With new air filter, synthetic oil change and starter with labor....490. That's it! All this in three to four years of owning it. Looking forward to buying a second one one day. Update: changed the gear fluid to redline lightweight synthetic high impact. Makes a big difference. Needs a few repairs that are common with these cars. Needs reinforcing plates on the front chassis part where the front sway bars connect. Apparently this is a common issue. Have to repack the axles with grease. The car runs great! Have a ac leak somewhere. Will take care of that in the winter months. Paint is fading but comes up with some buffing. Will repaint in the future. Still a fabulous car! Like with all old cars it's all about maintenence.

This Car is Amazing!
I've only had this car for less than a month but I absolutely Love it already. It's blue with blue interior. The body is in perfect shape and also completely Stock! The car gets up and goes with no problem what so ever. It gets a lot of looks and people awe to it. All I have to say is if you ever get the chance to get one, get it.
Best car ever!
I bought this car brand new and drove it for 160,000 miles. I only had to replace the alternator and brakes and tires. I do however change the oil often and only run supreme fuel. Fun cool and fast as the dickens.
This is a Performance Investment
When someone says Turbo, most car fanatics usually just assume it to be Porsche. I do too, but now the MR2 comes to mind first. If you like comfort, convenience and space and room for 5, go buy a Camry. If you're a serious enthusiast who likes to have fun and doesn't care about cup holders (which by the way are available if you look for them on the MR2) this is the car for you. Extreme fun to drive tops up or down, simply stunning engine that 3S-GTE, and the CT-26 is a powerful turbo also.
great car
I bought a 91 mr2 in 2001 with 90k miles it would not break down and was the best car I ever had bought. The only think bad was it burnde a tad of oil. I sold it for a 95 m3 and had so many break downs I sold that and got another bmw m3, 98 and thought things would get better, but it is also always in the shop. I has so much fun in the mr2 and will do it all over again but this time I will get the 95 supra. Dont let the hight miles of the toyotas scare you the run like a top even in to the 200k mile area. I kick my self for selling my loving mr2 that never let me down.
Great Tuner
I'm a tuner enthusiast as well as an autocross racer. Bought the car at 175k miles and its not given me any problems. Its N/A but with a few mods I've bumped the HP up a good 40 to 50 over stock. A lot of fun to drive, great to race. Working in the engine compartment is no fun at all though. Not much room. Still no leaks in the t-tops, everything is functional. Happy owner.
mr2 sexy
the f word fun fast fantastic the car is very fun to drive with the t tops off. u will get alot of looks from girls with this car.
Never Under Estimate a Japanese Car
The car handles great stock even better with suspension upgrade, "Corners on a dime". Powerful, quick and agile. Fun fun to drive in back twisty road where the line divides the skilled driver and the rest. The 40/60 front to back weight ratio makes it handle like a true exotic sportcar. The turbo gives that extra kick when you need it. So exilerating to drive it. It makes driving experiences more memorable, because it's so fun to drive it. That's it, you can find out for yourself once you own it. There is a club mr2 worldwide too for those die hard. Go find one and have fun!
compact exotic
The MR2 is the most awesome compact car ever! Its light, has great handling, mid-engine-rear-wheel-drive, small, looks like no other car on the road, and it turns heads everywhere. It could use more power, but thats what the turbo is for, the NA is for tight curves. Needless to say the other engine that are swapable into the MR2.
Pocket Rocket
I've wanted one of these cars ever since I was in high school and now I've got one. Boy, are these cars awesome. I love it! For the price you can't beat this car. Although small, it can be used as an everyday vehicle. The interior is well set up and the seats are all day comfortable. The exterior will never look old. And it's by far the most fun car to drive. In a straight line it scoots and it takes curves line your on rails. Dollar for dollar you can't beat it.
Love This Car
This car still turns heads, it's fast, fun to drive, reliable as hell. I simply love to drive this car hard, and with over 195K miles it still has the power and quickness. Furthermore, the handeling in this car is awesome!!! Because it's a mid-engine car it turns on a dime.
Great Performance
Where else can you find great handling at such a low cost? The mid-engine rear drive setup makes driving challenging, fun, and exciting. It's easy to drive, easy to own, and makes you look good as a driver.
One of the greatest cars. Ever
I've been driving Mr2s since I graduated highschool. And it's a lover affair that actually seems to grow every year. I'm on my 3rd '2 now. I've driven the NA and currently drive the Turbo (although it is the imported Japanese motor) and I can say both engines are a blast to drive and the car is remarkable reliable. I really can't say enough good things about these little sportsers. Classic styling, frightning handling and the interior is so simple and brilliant- it just doesn't get any better for the price. Seriously, it doesn't. I've looked.
Favorite all time car to drive
An amazingly well built, reliable, and fun car to drive. Nothing corners like it until you get to $200K range and lots of upgrades available as this model was popular and made in Japan until 2004 or so. Drifters love it and looks wise it can hold its own. Best car I have ever owned by far, and that includes some BMWs.
Still Going After All These Years
I see that there haven't been any reviews since 2002. Well it's 2008 and I still own my MR2. It is probably the most fun car I have ever owned outside my BMW X5. I don't drive it quite as much, but I do have over 180K miles on it and I have rebuilt the engine, modernized the interior, that is upgraded the stereo with a touch screen GPS nav/DVD stereo system which fits perfectly like it was always meant to be there, and re-covered cloth seats in leather. I also have larger tires and wheels which adds to the attractiveness of this sports car. This is one sports car that if you can get your hands on, you will never regret owning.
Baby Ferrari
The best sports car for the money!
Mr2 Turbo's Rule
I have had this car for about 5 months now and I absolutly love it. Aquired with 165,000 miles and it still runs strong. Good commuter but even more fun in the warm weather. Great overall car that can be inproved to be a real monster 91-92 need better syncros although if you these models are the eisiest to find cheap. I would suggest doing a tranny swap from a 93-95 you also get LSD this way. Handling on the 91-92 also get a little tuff in wet conditions due to a rear suspension fault that occured in the 91-92 although it really keeps you on your edge when your fooling around in town. Engine is also difficult to work on.
TOYOTA....TURBO...MID-ENGINE...RWD. yup!
What more can you ask for? A cup holder, back seats, cargo room? NO! ITS A SPORTS CAR!!! I bought my 91 Turbo about 3 months ago with 74K. I have owned lots of cars, this one takes the cake. I take this car to the limit almost everyday, and it just begs for more. Haven't lost a race yet. Audi 1.8T, Prelude SH, Corrado, Civic SI, 5.0, the list goes on. I have only a few minor upgrades, exhaust, ecu, shortshifter, springs. Not to mention it corners like a SOB. Combine that with Toyotas superior reliability and some damn fine gas mileage...
Wonderful car!
I have wanted an MR2 for as long as I can remember. I love the sleek styling and awesome handling characteristics of one of the best selling mid-engine cars in the world. I am 19 and I bought this car as a project. The previous owner(s) neglected the car and it was in pretty sad shape. The engine spun a rod bearing on the freeway (was to be expected) and then I had an excuse to put a different engine in the car. The original engine was a great, workhorse motor that responded well, got good gas mileage, parts were cheap (these engines are everywhere). It was also a very easy engine to work on. Surprisingly, the car is easy to work on, the mid-engine design do not hinder basic maintenance
Hard to find more fun for the price!
I've owned the MR2 for 7 years and have loved every moment. It's most fun on a country road where you can push it to its limits.
MR2
I have enjoyed driving this MR2. I used to fly F-4's in the Air Force and this car, though not having quite the kick of an F-4, does move out quickly with the sound I like. There is no hesitation going up hills, passing, or just wanting to keep at the head of the pack.
If you can afford to buy...buy
If you your looking for a sports car, this little road rocket should be on the list. Watch for early production manual transmission problems though. Other than that and faded red paint {unless another color which is rare}, the car is really fun to drive. Turbo MR-2's are getting hard to find and should be a collectors item. Grab one if you have the money!! Toyota reliable.
The little car that could
Great car. Had to do a full tune-up when I bought it but it still runs like new, not like most 11 years old cars. It hasn't been well kept but you wouldn't really know it because with a little TLC these cars come back to life. Accelleration is great on both models and the fun factor is through the roof. If you don't like small cars like I do then this is not the car for you. Find the car that fits your lifestyle.
'91 MR2 - Sporty, Reliable, Fun to Drive
This is a great little sports car. It's fast, fun to drive, and nothing ever goes wrong with it. It handles better than any other car on the road. It looks and sounds great too. People stop to look at it anytime I go anywhere. Everyone thinks it is a Ferrari. People are always asking what it is and if it is new. The only compaint I can even think of is that it doesn't have cupholders!
Nearly 12 Years of Reliable Fun
In over 11 years of ownership only one repair - air conditioner replaced. Great fun, good gas mileage, and extremely reliable. Unlike the current incarnation of the MR2, this model has lots of storage space with a deep trunk and room behind the seats and under the hood.
no other sport coupe like this one
i have bought my car for about 8 months now and i love it. this car can give it all to you. your friends will tell you that you have a nice car and they're rite, you do have a nice car. the speed is pretty good, but if you really want speed i would say you get the TURBO it's a lot faster, but my NON-TURBO is still pretty fast so up to you but other model are great.
The ultimate daily exotic
Before I talk about the car, first look at the fantastic community of friendly, knowledgable enthusiasts the MR2 has: www.mr2oc.com The MR2 has put so many smiles on my face... I can't even begin to count. It's toyota build quality, reliability, and efficiency, with Ferrari looks and performance. Hands down this is the BEST car for the person who wants a daily driven sports car. The MR layout has the perfect balance for superior handling as well, and the NA is the autocross champion of its class. The turbo (3sgte motor) has unbelievable horsepower potential as well.
Best inexpensive sports car in the world
I bought the car used in 97 and have since logged 130K on the car. The only caost have been changing the timing belt and new brake rotors. The car still runs perfect and looks better than most cars that have half the miles and age. This is by far the best car for people who want a daily driver exotic. Huge cult following for these cars makes for great club events.
fun car 2 drive
fun to drive, excellent economy, excellent performance
Best Buy for the Money
I bought my 1991 Mr2 Turbo with T-tops and 69k miles for $7k. I see more Corvettes and Porsche's on the road than Mr2's. It rare, fast, affordable and dependable. I love to take her on curvey back roads and kick the turbo in through turns. That gets your heart rate going!! 200hp stock!! Add a MBC ($50), FCD($100), Intake($100) and Exhaust($500) and your running close to 250HP!! Wow!!
still a fun car to drive
I bought this car new 16 years ago and still get a kick out of driving it. The exterior stills looks like it could pass for a newly designed car. The interior could use a little more leg and head room. Yes, you do need a cup holder. There is lots of room to store stuff. The trunk even holds 2 sets of golf clubs easily. On the repair side, I've had some problems with the electical (speakers, interior lights, and power windows). I've replaced the struts, had a valve job, and need a new air conditioner (small leak that would cost about $600 to repair). Also the 5 speed is a little rough, particularily in 2nd gear. However with all said and done, its a keeper and I hope I can drive it 16 more years.
who needs a ferrari
I've owned MR2's for a few years now and have finally come to the realization that I am obsessed. Besides the fact that it is extremely fast(especially with some performance parts), it is comfortable to drive in for long periods of time, has more luggage space than you would expect, and has that legendary Toyota reliability. By far the most excitement for the money.( Who cares if it doesn't have cup holders, nop real sports car should!)
Quite a Car
Purchased the car new in 1990. It has never failed me in any way except for some speaker wire corrosion 2x and Cd player crapped out. It runs flawlessly and will always be in my garage. I should have bought the Turbo, but my father talked me out of it almost 20 yrs ago.
Still a winner
I bought the car back in 1994 with 50k miles on it. Today it has 112k and although I retired it as a daily commuter she's still fun to drive when i play with it. I had to get it painted, the 91 red paint was awful, and it needs a new power antenna assembly. Otherwise it keeps hummin and feels terrific to drive with t-tops open on a nice day.
Love this Car
I think this car was designed perfectly. Everything is exactly where I would want it to be. This is my favorite car I have ever owned
Fun & Flashy
people look everywhere we go, kids are in awe. love the feeling of power. have own several cars (still do), this a my favorite to ride or drive!
MR2
i love the car, its very fun to drive and love every feature of it!
An amazing little car that 'rides on a rail.'
Handling is superb, my 88 Toyota Celica all trac was equal in handling and faster but that caused problems. Such as a horrendously fast speeding ticket one afternoon on I5 (143mph) and a spin with reverse on a 40mph corner with a Ford F350 coming at me. The only thing I don't like is how small the car is and other drivers don't always see it. It might be good to add 'Is it visible to others,' in the safety section. The one I bought had been salvaged from a rear end hit so I had some stuff to fix before I could get it to a semi regular title. Although I am old it isn't too bad to get in/out of the car and it does have enough storage between the frunk (front trunk) and a small trunk in the rear. It did provide a moment of humor at DMV not too long ago. The lady asked me to pop the hood and I did. She meant the engine hatch behind cabin. I managed not to laugh but did smile. She was ok with it and I'd lay money on her not doing that again. These are quite old and getting hard to find in good condition which has caused prices to rise. The turbo versions get higher prices but I'd hate to watch another of my cars burn to ground like the All Trac.

Bang for the Buck!
Bought it w/ just over 100k on the odometer. The only mechanical repairs I've had was to rebuild the power steering due to a leak and replace emergency brake cables. Previous owner wasn't too mechanically inclined and I've had to fix some problems due to his poor mechanic skills. Parts are expensive and Labor time adds up due to mid engine design. Luckily I do most of them myself. That said, this is one of the best cars I have ever owned!! Engine is bullet proof and over engineered to 400hp. Handles better than a Ferrari 348 with the same acceleration time. Dollar for dollar this the best looks and performance you can get.
Best Used Sports Car ever..
I purchased this vehicle when it was 50k miles old.. I've since put an additional 62k on it. Although I no longer use it as a commuter car (12k miles per year) I still love this little rocket ship. Red, t-tops, 200hp and a rockin stereo will always make for a great day and an envigorating experience to anyone who drives one. Every time I take it out of the garage it seduces me. This should be a collectors car.
ultimate sports car
Awesome! Tail happy when purposefully slung around...minor suspension mods and you won't be able to lose traction even with 275+ hp.
Still Going And Going And Going...
This little car is the best investment I've ever purchased. Purchased in 2000 with 107,000 miles on it, my 1991 MR2 has only required a few tune-ups, oil changes, new tires, gas, and car washes. It currently has 214,000 miles and it still keeps going and going and going. I love this car!
