Used 2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Consumer Reviews
What a piece of junk
We owned a 07 highlander hybrid and it was solid as a rock, Sold to friend with 160 k and he's still driving with no issues. Thought we would update to a 10 model. Researched well and found one with 80k, one owner, dealer serviced regularly. Have had it almost 2 years and it's nothing like older model. Seems cheaply made- engine is noisy to point that it's embarrassing to be near it when engine cycles on and off. Gas mileage is poor, best is about 24 mph. Had to replace suspension bushings at cost of over $1200. Mechanic said factory bushings were a joke- replacement aftermarket ones are 3 times the size of factory. Still has play and clunking noise in front end.Check engine light comes on and off- code points to a evap canaster/pump- part cost upwards of $1,000. Now rear hatch glass will not open with button- another expensive repair. Paint finish is poor- seems like it chips and scratches just by looking at it. Have always owned Toyotas but not after this one. Update, Traded in for a used 2017 Kia Sorrento SX. Been very happy with the quality and performance of the Kia.

We love this hybrid SUV! Best purchase!
We needed a small SUV to haul rigid hull inflatable boats (typically less than 2000 lbs). We had the 3500 lbs tow package installed (much nicer than aftermarket). I wanted a hybrid because "peak oil" is real, I want to be able to keep driving and boating foryears to come :) This is a technology wonder. We love it. We routinely take long trips for the business and nobody complains. Everyone is surprised how fast we get there although this is the first car I have ever own that I don't feel compelled to speed in. It's trained me that I can get at destination roughly at the same time without speeding. It's also trained me that fast starts are incredibly wasteful on gas. Easy to get 30 mp

Better Than I Hoped For
When I bought the car over 4 1/2 years ago, I never expected to get close to the EPA ratings on the gas mileage. But I frequently get gas mileage exceeding the 28 mpg predicted. I have gotten a full tank to average over 31 mpg on a couple of occasions. A full car with 4 people and luggage driving over 70 mph will be closer to 26.5 or 27 and in a Chicago winter sometimes getting 24 mpg. Right now I have close to 108,000 miles and I have never changed the brakes and I am still on my second set of tires. I have never had a repair issue other than normal maintenance. I have only had to change one brake light and no headlights. The real surprise is that I am now in the market for another car and I cannot find another car that can give me the cargo capacity and mileage that this Highlander gives me, not even the 2016 Highlander.

Fuel Economy is same as regular highland
Very disappointed in the 'hybrid' aspect of this car. Have reached the 5000 mile mark where the dealer said it would take that long for the car to get used to my driving, whatever that means. Anyway, I am still averaging 18 MPG on city streets and only get above 20 when I go on the highway, which is only about 1/week. It's definitely NOT worth the difference in cost, go for the regular!
Update
We've now had our 2001 HiHy for over a month. Still averaging over 30 mpg city and 27 mpg hwy. Absolutely love the roominess, pick-up and mileage.
