We have 2 kids (7 and 5) and a dog. As the name says, no minivans allowed (been there, done that). Wife was leasing an '02 CR-V which was a great vehicle in itself, but with price for the CR-V getting up there, the Mazda5 caught my eye. I had the wife, go test drive one expecting her to not like it (she is a staunch Honda person). Turns out she loved it, so we decided to lease one. Of course this was 1 week before the recall so we don't get it until October. So far we are loving it. Fun to drive, just took 6 to breakfast (4 + 2 grandparents), and the sliding doors are keeping the carnage down in the parking lots. Overall a tremendous value for hauling the family around!

This car meets the needs of the American market, people just have to know about it. I'm surprised that Mazda has not advertised this vehicle. It has a hit on its hands. I love all the features for the money. It drives great and serves the needs of most families with. I traded in a Nissan Armada, used the equity & now have no car payment. It uses half the gas and costs half as much for an SUV with as much as this offers. Smart buy. If you can find one in area, you should buy it. There would be no reason to purchase cars like the xB, PT, HHR, Matrix or regular family sedans like Accord or Camry with this on the market. With Camry/Accord, you can buy this for less and get a get a lot more.

My sport model has the automatic transmission and I love it. Shifts are smooth and quick and the performance is fine for me. Doesn't downshift on any of the hills on my commute which I can't say for some previous vehicles. First full tank of gas 26 plus mpg. That's every bit as good as the EPA estimate, so I can't complain. I'm having trouble finding a really comfortable adjustment for the driver's seat, but I'm working on it. Great quality, lots of space, smooth quiet ride and willing engine. A lot of vehicle for the money. I love it.

Aside from the recall the experience has been nothing short of amazing! We were given a minivan to use during the recall and it only strengthened my argument against buying one. That's right, I don't classify the 5 as a minivan because of the way it handles. Built on the 3's platform, Mazda succeeded in keeping the "soul of a sports car" intact. I was driving on a two lane highway and a car who was waiting to pull out onto the opposite lane begins to pull out into the opposing lane and stalls out half-way between my lane and the shoulder. I swerved to the left and there was an on-coming truck and before I knew it I was safely back in my lane.The 5 saved our lives.

So far, this car, minus one particular issue I'll get to later, has been just about perfect. I feel proud driving one of these down the streets of San Francisco. This is especially so when i drive by the two other cars I was within moments of purchasing instead of the 5 - the Subaru WRX or Forester. I'm 33, I have a 3 1/2 year old son and I'm recently separated. I agonized over the decision. Do i get the WRX, i.e. single-guy, race-car on a budget. Or the Forester, i.e. time to grow up, go conservative and be "responsible". My answer, why not some "responsible" zoom-zoom, i.e., Mazda5. I've read lots of complaints about the power, but the stick I got makes for some pretty exciting driving!
