400,000 Miles and still running smooth
403,069 Miles (YES you read it right 400k+)and still feels smooth/reliable/ No major issues. This is my Second Toyota/Lexus vehicle. I bought this vehicle brand new (8 miles) five years ago and use it as my primary work vehicle (commute from Chicago to Atlanta) every week. I maintained it very good, (regular service, oil change, tries everything) but still my cost of maintenance was far less compared to any other vehicles like BMW/Mercedes (I owned both earlier and had ton of issues) I changed tires 8 times till date (every 50k miles). I am planning to trade in for 2012 RX450h (yes, I will make of my current vehicle till its hit 500,000 miles - Half million, I am very confident it will g
Good value as a used vehicle
I took the plunge with an old Lexus. I joined the ever increasing group of SUV owners and purchased a 2006 RX400h with 148,000 miles for under $7,000.- So far, I'm impressed with the ride quality, the noise isolation, the seating position. How many vehicles can you find with AWD, navigation, bluetooth, leather, moonroof, power rear hatch, heated seats, hybrid power, for under $7,000? If you're going to take the gamble on a vehicle without warranty & high mileage, Toyota, Honda, are probably the best bets. I don't drive this vehicle like a sports car so I'm not concerned about going fast in corners. it has plenty of power, good stopping ability, good gas mileage. The paint is high quality and is holding up as well as the interior. The armrests are a little thin and I made two repairs. Lots of parts are available on EBAY, oem or reproductions. Some parts are expensive but you can also buy many parts or service your vehicle at Toyota dealers, since they are very similar to the Toyota Highlander. I have a good mechanic. It would have been nice if Toyota made these cars run on regular gas instead of premium, other than that, I just hope my hybrid battery lasts awhile longer! After two years and 20,000 miles, for a total of 170,0000 miles, still going strong, with normal maintenance, no breakdowns, a/c is cold, paint and leather still in good shape. Would absolutely buy another, but I would like to get the next generation, the 450H, but they're not as good a bargain as the 400H, yet! My only complaint is that my dash has developed cracks. Toyota had a recall but my cars' cracks didn't show up until the recall had already expired! I contacted customer service and they wouldn't make any concessions, not even a discount on a new dash, which is also expensive to install. I've been hearing other problems with Toyota products, like premature excessive oil use in several of their models. Even Toyota is no longer what it use to be! That said, they are still exceptional values and the styling is still current! Now sixteen years old and other than the cracked dash, car is holding up well, the design isn't dated, highly recommended, more valuable than when I purchased it!

Best reliability of the three vehicles I've owned
I've purchased a Ford Taurus and a GM Alero brand new and both vehicles had $2-$3k issues just after 3 years of ownership. I bought a 2006 RX400H used in 2009 (from dealership, it was leased). Initial problem was the battery in the CPU; I don't believe the dealership changed it out and I couldn't start the vehicle if it sat for longer than 24 hours. Since then, no problem - just regular maintenance. Put one new set of tires on it, avg MPG is 27 (being very conscious to "coast." Best savings: my husband sat in 3 hours of traffic to drive 45 miles due to a snowstorm and used less than 2 gallons of gas.
Long term REview 2006 Lexus RX400h
Long term results report. I had my invertor replaced september 3, 2010. So far it has been bullet proof. Toyota fixed this $10,000 repair for free. Basically it is a faulty invertor , recall # 87559 June 29, 2011. This was at 64,000 miles and I am now at 96,000 miles with everything working well. I had to do the timing belt, tensioners, water pump , as part of the recommended 90,000 mile maintenance. I also had to do a radiator and front control arm bushings so this was a major bill. I did switch tires to Yokohama Parada's so the car rides very well but thye are not the longest lasting tires. Gotta figure if there is a cheaper way than a lexus dealer. But in thinking of doing all this work I decided this is a overall very reliable car and worth doing as the car rides well, looks good, and is nice to drive. I figure the Prius 's I have seen used as cabs are going over 300,000 miles so there is some precedent for long term ownership. Yes I would buy one again ( and I guess by fixing it I am planning another 90,000 miles , I hope ! )
Actual gas mileage = false advertising
Our gas mileage has never been as advertised. We bought our RX400h with 8000 miles on it in Sept 2006. It was 1 yr old, the prior owner traded it in fast and took a $20k loss on the trade in. We have always averaged 26.2 mpg in a mix of city/hiway driving. We had the hybid inverter module replaced in Feb 2012. $10k+ repair! Our gas mileage then plummeted from 26.2 to 23.4 mpg. We suspect that Lexus reprogrammed the engine management computer to use the gas engine more and the hybrid less so as to extend the life of the batteries and inverter. This way, they won't have to make so many expensive warranty repairs. Please let us know if you saw the same thing with your mileage.
Big Ticket Repairs
Last year while far from home my RX400h stopped dead on the highway. After having it towed 145 miles and losing 3 days of vacation, Lexus replaced the computer to the hybrid system. The car was under warranty so other than a LOT of hassle, it only cost me $150 not $10,000+. Two weeks ago, I was driving in town and my car died again. Luckily I was able to get the car over to the side of the road--all the systems died. After about a week of trying to figure out what was wrong, Lexus determined it was the inverter and gratefully, even though out of warranty, the dealership replaced the part ($10K+) for free (98K miles on my Rx). My gas mileage has never been much more than 24-25mpg.
...Keeps on Ticking!
This is a solid, well-designed semi-luxury small SUV. It is and has been exactly what I had hoped for when I purchased it. It is very comfortable and since it's a hybrid, it gets better gas mileage than the competition. As a Lexus (TOYOTA), it is super reliable and generally not too expensive to maintain.

love it, but it does have faults
This has been the best car I've ever owned, however, I have never gotten more than 21 MPG. Beyond that, there are no cup holders for those in the back seats, which I never thought of until it became an issue. The navigation system takes too long to start & the update ($500) I paid for after a few years didn't include any noticeable improvements. In my 6th year, as well as this, my 7th year of ownership, I have experienced a new issue with the door to the gas cap sticking, with an annoying wait while gas visibly escapes to relieve pressure in order for the door to open. The dealer tells me this is normal, but it is new to me in all of these years. Its a fun car to drive but with flaws.
Amazing Vehicle.
This Vehicle is the Best suv to own hands down. For those of you who own one or have driven one, you know what I'm talking about. Awesome look, feel, ride, and reliablility. I will never consider owning anything other then lexus for those reasons listed above. The thing moves! Very very fast like a v8, but with 4cyl. effieciency. Gas mileage is great! 26-29 overall. For a vehicle weighing in at 5000 pounds and AWD, you would be crazy not to think that it was fuel efficient. If there were a negative review on this vehicle it would have to be from another car manufacturer because they just cant handle quality like this. Take care of your vehicle and it will take care of you!
I am stumped
I love my Lexus RX 400h and I have already driven it 98,000 miles. But the number of service problems that have been coming up recently are very frustrating. The criuse control died, the battery died, the radiator was leaking and had to be replaced, (not a single drop of coolant on the garage door) and just yesterday the timing belt, the pullies and the water pump had to be replaced too per Lexus request. More than $2500 in less than a year. Is my beloved SUV falling apart or is this a conspiracy !!! I bought my SUV brand new in May 2005 and I feel that I am suffering through the deficiency of it being the first year model in this series.
28 MPG combined on a recent road trip
Unlike some critics of the hybrid RX, I am getting excellent mpg without driving like a grandma. A recent 300-mile road trip to the Antelope Valley Poppy Preserve averaged 28 mpg on the mountainous roads of the Angeles National Forest. My normal everyday driving has never seen below 26mpg combined, and during open highway cruising I average 31mpg -- that's amazing for a heavy crossover! The key is -- regular maintenance, tire pressure 34-36psi, keep to 60-65mph on the highway and 40-42 on the streets. A very comfortable road trip car! I like the RX because it sits higher than most crossovers and lower than SUVs, you still step *up* onto your seat like a SUV but it's must more fuel-efficient. While it doesn't get the 50mpg of my old Prius, it's much more comfortable and feels safer due to the higher seating position. Gas prices in CA are going up again so I am very happy with my purchase. Besides mpg, the electric hybrid motor makes car accelerate like a V8 and feels much faster than regular RX. The only con is lots of body roll in cornering due to the heavy battery, so tread gingerly in the twisties!

Not the advertised MPG!
The only reason I purchsed the 400h was because of the so called "great gas mileage." A joke at best. I live in Texas, it can't get any flatter, I am a very conservative driver and my MPG is at 21.2. I guess the only way to get the 29-33 mpg they claim is to drive under 40 mph, never run the air conditioner and live where the air temperature is always in the 70s.
Best SUV
I have 229,000 miles since 2005. Super reliable

Feel Totally Let Down
We were thrilled with this car when we first got it. A great, comfortable family car for long journeys and a greener option for the city. We knew the fuel economy wasn't going to be great but the fact that you knew you weren't going to be churning out fumes in slow moving traffic was the main winning point. (I walk a lot in town and hate going past slow moving traffic with my kids - it stinks). After a few months the car would not start. And ever since, we've had serious starting issues. New batteries didn't last and the problem persists. Internet searches show many others with the same problem. Lexus shockingly unhelpful.
2006 Lexus 400h hybrid
Best car I have ever driven. Would buy the exact same car again. love my car
Nice Car
We have owned the 2006 RX-400h AWD for 4 yrs. We have been very happy with the car. No mechanical problems or breakdowns, much better mileage, about 26 mpg, than our 1999 RX-300 AWD, 18 mpg. Recent safety inspection shows almost no brake wear due to regenerative braking system. Original Michelin Tires have lasted for 54,000+ miles. There are some rattles developing over the years, but nothing serious. Power Steering linkage was replaced by dealership, under warranty repair and at their own recommendation.
The World's First Luxury Hybrid SUV
The RX 400h boasts all the advantages of a hybrid gas-electric vehicle: Emissions are extremely low, reducing your impact on the environment. And it burns about as much gas as a compact car, helping to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. But it's fast. Stomp on the gas and the RX 400h jumps off the line significantly quicker than the regular RX 330. It can go head-to-head with a V8-powered Mercedes ML500. The RX 400h was not designed for serious off-road use. The regular RX 330 isn't exactly an off-road vehicle, either, but it handles gravel roads just fine.
My Lexus RX 400
This is my 2ed Lexus RX. I have had this vehicle for more than 5 years and I give it an over all rating of 8 on a 1-10 scale. Just a few days ago, the cruise control just quit and I am told that the stick on the steering column is broke; $400 to replace. I am on my third set of tires and I do not speed or burn rubber. Other than that the car has been very reliable and still looks almost brand new ( It is always garaged, however).
Nice Car, But Where is the Fuel Economy?
Concerned about America's dependence on foreign oil, I searched long and hard for a hybrid. I cannot fit in a Prius (really, I can't), and the best vehicle I found was the Lexus RX 400h. All around, it is the best vehicle I found. It is comfortable, with all the features I need (and the ones I don't need, I like). It is a delight to drive. However, the fuel economy leaves something to be desired. A big reason is because I drive a lot of short segments, and I reach my goal about the time the vehicle warms up. Still, I wish Lexus had redirected a few of the horsepower into fuel economy, or at least given us the choice.
225,000 Miles and no issues
Okay, so the car looks a bit boring, but well over 200,000 miles without a single maintenance issue. This car just keeps going and going. Keeping my fingers crossed on the hybrid battery, but no signs of any issues.

Getting old and still working well
I am not much of a car buff, but after looking at the reviews thought I would check in about my car at 130,000 miles. No problems. Gets 27+ mpg on my 45 mi/hr commute which is flat and allows for coasting. As I read the reviews, I see that the biggest complaint is repair costs. I expect that that is the way it is with all Lexuses. However, I have not had any, except recalls which were free (in cost and hassle factor). Love this car.
Great Everything Vehicle
This is my wife's car. We bought it used with 35K and have since put 40K on it. I call it the 'cream puff' because it is a Japanese Cadillac. Luxury, ride, and fit & finish are top notch and reliability is excellent. I will be the first to admit the design was not my favorite initally- but I've grown to love it because it does everything very well. AWD has been successfully Tahoe tested many times. It is an extremely easy & comfortable vehicle to drive. She is looking at the new model for no other reason then the 'new' factor. Would buy this year & model again in a heartbeat.
11 years with a Hybrid
My experience with this luxury Hybrid SUV may vary from your expectations. I purchased this car in a nearly new condition with less than 100 miles on the odo. It's backstory is too involved to repeat here. I've owned a number of SUV's over time and this vehicle is indeed a very indulgent selection. Ride, Road Noise and the like just vanish when inside the cabin. This year's 2006 Tech does not compare with what is available today but the Bluetooth hands free phone link and DVD navigation are a huge plus for any busy commuter or road warrior. My only real con's are the voice recognition is terrible as it can not recognize anything outside of the pre-programmed script input. End guidance is proper but stop navigation will get you nothing. Also the Hybrid returns a minimal improvement in overall gas mileage although it does provide a great boost in acceleration in the road. I did find the hybrid "boost" causes the car to lurch forward and pulls to the side... not good in some situations. My model has a rear DVD player with 2 wireless headphones to keep little one's busy, a nice touch that I rarely used. The leather interior is a bit less durable than I like and it shows when using the cargo space for large loads and the leather can cut easily. I have since traded this in for a Toyota Highlander limited.

A classier hybrid for distinctive taste
The Lexus RX 400h is a dream to drive. The power is unbelievable. It is very comfortable. Easy ingress and egress. I drive it off road for 2 miles to reach my home. It is a very smooth drive on the dirt road. Flies up the canyons of Utah. Corners exceptionally well. I'm averaging about 26 mpg, which is a substantial increase from my gas guzzling SUV. I'm a heavy foot. A light foot will have even better mileage. I'm sold on the hybrid technology as well as the Lexus brand.
Mixed review
Great deal of comfort smooth quite ride with fuel approx. 28 mpg. Lower mpg on highway. Largest complaint Tires wear out at a much greater rate than any car I have previously owned. Checked alignment etc. to no avail a constant issue. Also have had two batteries!
Third RX
Flawless in quality (no repair needed ever on any of three RXs I've owned over past 9 years).
A signficant achievement for Lexus
As an engineer, I was very curious to see how the 400h would perform. Although the basic concepts of hybrid operation SOUND good, putting into practice while providing a pleasurable driving experience is something else. I am pleased beyond my expectations how Lexus pulled it off. You can barely detect the transitions between gas and electric power. Buyers should have realistic expectations, however. For highway driving, don't expect a radical improvement over a gas engine, because the 400h cruises under gas power. Also, the engine runs constantly for the first few minuets to warm up the catalytic converter. The real economy occurs for around-town driving after warmup.
Excellent combo of power and efficiency
My wife loves our fully equipped RXh, which blends excellent performance with good economy. We are getting 26- 28mpg mixed driving around DFW compared with 20-22mpg with our old RX 330. Highway passing power is surprisingly strong. The Mark Levinson sound system is umsurpassed in this quiet and smooth vehicle. Very comfortable for our family of four.
Go fast RX 400h
This is my second RX series AWD. I like the reliability, comfort and style. The car is wonderful on a trip or just driving around town. The brakes are the best performance of any vehicle I have owned. I like the way they respond to the road especially in rainy Florida weather. In addition, the car has amazing pickup which is extremely important when entering some of the interstate highways that cannot be avoided. I enjoy the quiet engine of this hybrid. My next will be a Lexus.
After 5 yrs 100,000 miles still going strong
I bought this one from Lexus dealership in Beverly Hills. Experienced no issues. Oil changes and break and tire job that was all I had.
Great ride; cheap paint
I'm at 68000 miles on my RX 400h and have been very happy with the car's overall drive. It has NEVER broken down or needed repairs. The interior finishes (especially the silver/aluminum finishes) scratch VERY easily, as does the exterior paint. I've replaced the tires twice - you have to get the kind that are rated for the extra weight of the car. I love the Nav system, and the one button push to close the rear door.
Satisfied customer
From the test drive to my 1st 400 miles its been a pleasure to drive. My hazardous experience, a driving rainstorm, left me feeling safe and comfortable. The suv held the road and the windshield wipers reacting to the amount of rain made the ride fun.
After 7,200 miles, the good and the bad
Mileage is disappointing; I get 22-24. Nice looking wheels, but watch out at the curb - too easy to ding. Visibility a problem front and rear. Bluetooth sub-par; friends complain they can barely hear me. GPS interface very user unfriendly at first. A matter of taste, but the exterior is odd looking. Voice command is flukey; I crack up my niece by telling it to do something and getting a bizarre response. I don't feel confident throwing it around corners. All this said, I like it - good, quiet, solid ride. Acceleration quite strong when needed. Don't think I'll get another, though.
Great Expectations
I waited 20 months after researching most all of the major automotive periodicals and was misled. Lexus has delivered a dud. I was told that my fuel cosumption would be in the range of 38 mpg in town and 32 mpg on the hyway. Then about 4 mo.s before delivery they changed 32 in town and 29 on the hyway with an average of 30+. When I returned the vehicle to be examined because of the mileage situation the dealership told me to wait till the vehicle has 10k miles and it should get better. Well at 5k my overall average is a disappointing 24 mpg. Plus a week after purchase the wind screen fractured with out being struck by anything and was not repaired until I threatened legal action. Bad buy!
Good but not great
My gas mileage so far has been about 23 to 25 miles per gallon, but despite the claims, I really didn't expect much more. The car rides nicely but I do have a rattle in the back. The standard sound system is poor - much worse than in my 1998 Volvo. Get the upgraded sound system if you can. Also, I like the old wood trim better than the brushed chrome, which I think looks a bit cheap. Overall, the car is comfortable and rides well.
Loooove it!
Actual mileage about 23-24. Best vehicle I have ever owned. Only defect is paint, Bamboo Pearl. There seems to be something wrong with it.
approaching perfection
The RX400h continues Lexus' tradition of producing quality, innovative and reliable automobiles. I have owned one since April 25th, 2005 and still have my 1995 SC300. It has performed perfectly for 10 years. The RX400h has met all the claims made for it and is filled with the small amenities that characterize the line. The informative displays on the Nav screen and speedometer are teaching me a new way to drive... trying to keep the gas engine OFF! The on/off cycles of the engine are virtually unnoticable.
If you can afford it....
The style of the Lexus 400h Hybrid is excellent (the same as the RX330). If you can afford it, it is worth the purchase. Otherwise, if you need more room for children and cargo, go with the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Both use the same technology. Also, be sure to get the navigation system; it is $2,000 but worth having.
MPG Not What it should be
I love this car. It is a great size, comfort and fit. It drives tight and I feel safe in all driving conditions BUT the gas milage is not where it should be. On medium length drives (15-25 miles) in slowish city traffic I get the best mpg but that tops out at 28 mpg when I use a middle grade gas, it's around 24 when I use a low octane gas. It has a big engine and can move quickly when it needs to but it does not get the 30-35 mpg it promised. All in all I'll keep it untill the gas mileage, comfort and quality of another car can beat it.
No drawbacks
I love this car. The only difference between the hybrid and a regular vehicle is that sometimes the quiet operation is unnerving. It takes some getting used to. Now I find when I drive someone else car, I'm surprised when the engine kicks in immediately when I start it. That does not happen with my hybrid. The engine starts only when it needs to.
This is My ultimate SUV
I've only had this car for about 3 weeks. After owning several domestic SUV's and cars this lexus is my ultimate SUV. It's really comfortable to drive on long trips. It handles well. Very quiet cabin. Excellent interior quality. Great mileage for a vehicle this size 28 highway and 35 city. The engine is a bit whiney when accelerating hard (I'm used to a v8).
Disappointed that we aren't even getting 20mpg
I'm not sure yet on how this Lexus will do with reliability but I do love Lexus. I never write these things but I am very disappointed that we aren't even getting 20mpg. The dealership told me this vehicle was never designed to get good mpg, just cleaner emissions and slightly more horsepower over the 330. I would still buy an rx or gx but not the hybrid. I paid extra thinking I would save on gas and am very disappointed.
Problem not addressed
I have one of the very first RX40hs off the line. I waited a year an a half on a waiting list to ensure I got the first one to arrive. Unfortunately, I think I have a lemon. The car pulls to one side and after a year and a half and 25,000 miles it cannot be fixed. Tires were bald at 15,000 miles, and the dealer replaced all four gratis (which was nice of them). The dealer has been good. But Lexus corporate has pretty much ignored me and does not call when they say they will, if at all. I am extremely disappointed. Lexus customer care does not care, it seems. All they do is send surveys, but it seems they never read them.
Sold car 3 weeks after purchase
Three weeks after purchase, I traded the car and took a financial loss because of significant safety issues. When in reverse at night, it is difficult to see what's behind and below because the window is over 4' high, the window has dark tinting, and rear camera does not show anything in the dark. In reverse, the car runs on the battery and someone behind cannot hear the car coming and the driver cannot see anyone. It's an accident waiting to happen. Next, there is only one low gear which doesn't hold back the car like normal low gears. I don't like being forced to brake on snowy/icy roads. Good gas mileage requires constant monitoring and is almost same as RX330 on freeway, as Lexus admits.
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
The 400h is a great accelerator. Unfortunately, we feel deceived on the MPG. Getting approx. 21. Not the 28-35 promised. Also, driving during heavy rain...hydroplaning about 90% of the time! Unexpected and scary. The tires are a bummer. Had 3 very expensive flats in 3 weeks. Live in the country, need a whole lot more from my tires. Overall, this vehicle has awesome potential. With a few tweeks,(some, major), they'd have something unbeatable.
My Lemon
My RX400H only gets 20 MPG City. Going over wider speed bumps with a small amount of loft it sounds as if the engine is dropping out of the car with a loud bang. It has mild steady vibration at times that can be felt in the steering wheel & seat arm rest. Instrumentation is a joke. The cruise control is on its own lever & moves with the steering wheel making it impossible to get to it when turning the steering wheel.
Not Up to Lexus Standards
Continued problems with intermediate braking and steering. The dealership and factory have said pulsating braking and difficult steering are acceptable due to nature of electric regenerative engine. Driving performance of car not up to Lexus standards. Would not recommend purchasing expensive hybrid that does not deliver performance or mileage as advertised.
50,000 and 3 sets of tires later
My car is a service nightmare. Every time I bring it in they tell me I need new tires. Maintenance tells me this is standard on this model. It won't start some days and Lexus is not able to tell me what the problem is. I have never made it out the door without paying over $1,000 in repairs. It is a nice car and fun to drive but not worth the headaches of needing to be somewhere and not being able to get it started. Lexus does not seem to understand its own hybrid technology yet when problems occur.
Hang on for some excitement!
I have had the vehicle now for 3 years and the Goodyear Tires were the real downfall of the vehicle They were like skin at 20,000 miles. I really like the acceleration at any speed and the gas mileage is about 28 to 29 highway and anywhere from 26 to 31 in the city, depending on whether I drive on flat or hilly areas. The ride is not the best as the seats are too firm. Handling is great.
Never again
I've had many luxury vehicles, and this one by far has needed the most repairs, and had the wierdest, most difficult to diagnose problems of them all. My mercedes never had an issue, and routine maintenance was a pleasure with loaner car service. My grand cherokees have been somewhat maintenance prone, but dead on schedule and ultra-reliable. This thing? I'm afraid to drive it anywhere. There's a shudder in the front end that nobody seems to be able to fix, even after replacing brakes all around including calipers and rotors, cv axles, struts, bushings, and wheel bearings... the mileage is absolutely horrible, 23 at best. The gps is akward and outdated, and updates are definitely not worth the cost. There is no way to add an auxiliary input for audio from any other source, the back seat passengers can modify your gps entries from the rear seat entertainment system and you cannot stop them from doing so because you can't make that system stay off if they turn it back on. The car has horrible body roll in corners, worse than any other vehicle I've driven in 40 years of driving. The button and control layout of vital things like defrost and cruise control are all unintuitive ly placed or are a reach to get to, forcing you to take your eyes off the road. I drive about 100k miles a year and this has been the worst. I'll never buy another lexus.
