lEXUS RX300 REVIEW AFTER 10 YEARS

Hi, I have this car for 10 years now with 220k In general it was a great car very comfi to drive. It had few small problems but 2 problems that I want to share with all potential owners. One is with the anti lock brake sensors. During the 10 years had to change 2 anti lock sensors. 1000$ cost for each.Lexus built the antilock sensor into the drive shafts so there are 4 sensors in this car as it is a 4 wheel drive ( 4 shafts). In order to change the sensor the shaft must be replaced with a cost close to 1000$. Other issue is the timing belt. This model has a timing belt that must be changed around the 180k with a cost to the customer of close to 1000$. so be aware this is what you will face

I had a 2006 RX 330, my teenaged sons were T-boned in it as an Escalade slammed into them. It could’ve been bad, car was totaled but sons were fine. Airbags deployed beautifully. I can’t say enough about this. You’ll read many stories about Lexus safety in bad car accidents. I bought a used 2002 RX300 in 2017: Great gas mileage. So reliable in the brutal Midwest winters. Drove it for 3 years. Loved it. I gave it to my oldest son, his only wish was that it had a little more power, but it keeps him from speeding so I’m ok with that! These are just the best cars...new or used. Everyone I know of who’s ever had one, still has it. Usually passed onto a family member because you don’t want to let these cars go!

If there was a higher rating for build quality and reliability besides excellent, this car would get it. As a senior in high school my parents allowed me to drive this car to school and back. However, one day coming back home i was stopped in a construction zone. A car going around 60 mph apparently did not realize that i was stopped in front and nailed my back bumper. I felt the impact but the car beautifully absorbed the blow. I was so grateful i was driving a truck, a high quality lexus truck, as the accident could have been a lot worse. as the accident could have been a lot worse.

The Greatest Car I Have Ever Owned

This is the greatest car I have ever owned. I bought the car certified pre-owned in 2005 and I am absolutely impressed with the quality. After observing my father's current Toyota Prius, which has all of the trims, my Lexus feels luxurious and opulent compared to the hard leather in his car. Every time I turn the key, I do not have to worry about whether the car will start. (I still don't know what the check engine light looks like, and the car is 10 years old.) The only problem is the antenna. It just...stops working. I've put three on the car, but Lexus paid for them all in full. This car is better than most new cars and can still outperform them. It's a great college-kid car, hands-down.

This car/SUV has excellent handling, great road stability in avoidance manoeuver (avoided a major crash at around 65 mph - thanks to the ABS). Nice pick up for a six, decent gas mileage. Interior well designed & all controls are well located. Could use a little more headroom (6'4"), & would like a telescopic steering wheel. A little wind noise at high speed. Excellent cabin noise reduction, where one can have speaker phone conversation without background noise. Great audio set up. Center console has four drink- holders, and enough storage to keep everyone happy. Overall a very satisfying driving experience all around, whether on long or short haul.

A friend and I went to a nearby Lexus dealer, checking out SUVs for him. An hour and a half and he was out the door with a new RX300. I was extremely impressed with the treatment he was given; I decided to lease an RX300. I received the same respect he was given. This SUV is meticulous! It's bank-vault solid, rides great, and the AWD is flawless. It's not a typical thirtysomething "guy car" and not the coolest SUV out there, but I'm one guy who thinks this SUV is great.

I purchased my RX300 as a certified pre-owned vehicle with 36000 miles on it from a Lexus dealer. Finally, after 245,000 miles, it had it's FIRST breakdown. The transmission went out. So, instead of putting a lot of money into a vehicle with almost a quarter of a million miles on it, I purchased another 2002 RX300 exactly like the one I had except for the exterior color and it had about 190,000 fewer miles. Couldn't see buying anything else because you can't get the reliability and service you get from Lexus. I can't recommend this vehicle highly enough!

Bought as fifth owner with 136K miles. Perhaps a risky move but the engine crapped out on the first 300 trip. After looking at the horror stories I'd never consider a RX300 again unless the previous owner maintenance could be verified beyond a shadow of a doubt, too risky.

I've been driving it for about a year and the whole experience is boring to say the least. There's little road information in the sluggish steering feel and road tracking isn't always linear and true. Braking is lousy and made artificially light. what really irks me is a wide turning circle that hinders parking and no such things as back up sensors offered. While cornering, you really feel its weight. I really feel this car is for a much older crowd. This car offers a silenced cabin and wallowy ride, yet unable to smooth out road bumps. Overall, disappointing car considering its hefty price and bad fuel mileage.

I have had this SUV for 9 years now and the only problem I have had is that in cold weather the fan belt sometimes squeals. A little grease eliminates the problem. I do regular oil changes every 5000 miles (use Mobil 1), and that's about it.

In the six years I've owned the RX 300, I can say the extra cost over a Toyota was worth it. I had my first maintenance problem, a loose hose on the smog system due to bad roads kicking up debris. The RX has survived a run through a rock slide with only a blown tire. The other vehicles around me were totaled per the state police. The vehicle is easy to drive and predictable to keep you out of trouble. I would definitely recommend this year model providing maintenance was done per schedule. I will probably buy another Lexus except I moved to a town with only a Toyota dealer so I wiil probably go with Toyota. Thanks to all previous posters who convienced me to but a Lexus. Hope this helps.

Purchased my RX with 84K miles and a 100K warranty. Car was in spectacular condition and according to service records had been meticulously maintained. Dealership found a leaky rear axle seal under warranty, but had no other issues. The 90K maintenance was a bit pricey (timing belt, flushes, et. al.) but reasonable. A fuel modulator had to be replaced right after warranty expired for @ $700 parts & labor. Have not encountered the engine failures that others have reported. Fit, finish & features still solid at 115K and dealership has been just wonderful. Bought an '07 ES 350 two months ago and the trusty '02 RX has become our fun, weekender. This vehicle sold me on future Lexuses from now on!

Bought this car 4 months ago. It had 80k on odometer. Was in very good condition inside and out. Always garaged. People couldn't believe it was 18 years old. I drove it about 500 miles and discovered it had no oil showing on the dipstick. I was surprised as it did not seem to be burning oil. Put 2 qts in and headed to the local repair shop. They told me this model was notorious for consuming oil and had serviced many of these. Something to do with sludge buildup, valve covers and PVC valve. Well $1700 later the problem was fixed. I've since driven it over 2,000 miles and no loss of oil. Although I had to initially deal with the oil issue, I do truly love this car. It's a very solid, quiet and smooth riding vehicle. It's easy to get in and out of and has ample cargo space for me. I had 2 other issues needing repair: front door windows and door locks to the tune of $1200. As it's in such good condition cosmetically and rides so nice, I hope to be able enjoy this car for many years to come.

This car did not live up to my expectations. After owning many Toyota products, a Corrolla was my first car, I will no longer be purchasing their product. The hype that this car would run for 200 to 300 thousand miles is just hype. My transmission gave out on a major highway at 10:00 PM in a construction zone 30 miles from ANY gas station or other help. Two years ago the air conditioning unit needed replacement and now there are electrical problems. I have never had so many problems with a car.

hi i am Mackenzie! I got McNugget for my first car at 16 years old this past summer with only 101,000 miles. WOW! Yes it did smell like moth balls and it had an exhaust leak, but it sat at my grandparents in Florida for 2 years, so what do you expect. The battery has some trouble in these cold Connecticut winters! The butt warmers work great in the snowy weather, as does the AWD system! It does have a temper, like me, and it doesn't like to start sometimes, then give it 10 minutes and it starts right up. It is 14 years old though, so what do you expect! It honestly is a great car if you don't always need reliability and you want to be known for the weird smells in the parking lot, so what do you expect, eh?

This vehicle rides like a tank. My wife likes this. I don't. She is very happy with the car. She feels safe and the seats are good for her sore back. I don't complain but I do find it top- heavy and unresponsive. Do yourself a favor and put on the best tires money can buy, get them rotated regularly and have the alignment checked. We get 19 mpg on a mix of city and highway driving. At 80000, it's been reliable. I shudder to think what a serious repair would cost. For this reason alone, I am agreeable to trading it in on a certified pre-owned RX330.

If you noticed, the annual mileage portion of this review was left blank. I couldn't comment, as I have only had my RX for 6 months, 3 of which I've been dealing with nothing but problems. 20 days post-warranty, my short block of the engine needed replacement, as it was burning excessive oil. Lexus stood behind the motor, but left me with the $2500-3000 labor bill. Dealership was horrible-- referring to me as a person looking to get an extra buck anyway I can; telling me I didn't appreciate any of the work they had done; and my list could go on! Will never deal with Lexus or Bergstrom ever again!

I am thinking buying a new Lexus RX. I have had my 2002 RX since Oct 2002. I've been the only owner and driver and it has been the best purchase I made. People often downplay the car b/c of what is perceived as a high price, but some people have had to buy a vehicle twice in the time period I have had this one. Small minor issues and routine maintenance has been the only thing I've done to it. I think I'm a Lexus for life girl.

I bought it new in 2002 for my wife and she's loved it more than any other vehicle. It's easy to drive, very quiet, and comfortable to ride in; even long drives. Lexus did a great job on the fit and finish - it still looks almost new. We've owned it for 7 years and it still has the original battery and wipers on it. We've changed the tires only once. I would recommend it to anyone; except families of five or more - a bit small.

Writing this in February 2021! At 113,000 miles my 2002 RX 300 runs like a top! I've been lucky to live nearby a Lexus mechanic that has always kept the car up to date on oil changes, etc. It still looks new! It is a solid car. The field of vision with the wide rear window is great. Don't know if any new car offers such good visibility out the back and sides. Obviously most cars now have that screen to take care of this. The turning radius is limiting but after 19 years I'm used to it and anticipate my parking and U turns. The mechanic said he's seen some of these older well maintained Toyota/Lexus cars run to 300,000 miles! I'll be dead by then!! :)

Retired from US Army in New Hampshire. With young kids I had a minivan. Besause of the hills the transmission was a pain. I search through used cars because of the unacceptable cost increases. Used Lexus was not one I considered until I found a 2002 RX 300 that looked new. AWD leather auto, electric everything. Great maintenance records. Under 55K miles and priced below 20K. Took a test drive and instantly fell in love. Traded in the van and put new tires onit and feel very safe and confident driving thru this long winter. If you can find one check it out.

Steering SUCKS, Car has the ever so FAMOUS Glove box rattle, and some other noises that just aren't worthy of the 44K price tag (out the door.)The goodyear Intergerity Tires Look LIKE and are CRAPPY. The car rides very nice, is pretty quite, but has developed a front end Squeak that seemingly cannot be fixed @ 22K miles. It has been a good car, but the V6 LACKS the power that can be purchased elsewhere for the +40K we paid. IE, INFINITY, JEEP, Mercury! We like the car but it is ?able @ 44K.

I love my Lexus. Has been the best vehicle I have owned. Was hit in the drivers side front corner by someone running a red light one year ago. I remember the firemen and EMT's telling us we walked away only because it was a Lexus. Lenghty repairs(10 wks) but have not encountered any problems afterwards. Because of the accident, I learned many things about it's construction and safety features, especially the airbags. Mine did not deploy but later found out they were not suppose to because of the location of impact. Negotiated price $33,000

Bought the RX 300 certified pre-owned with 42,000 miles. Loved the vehicle until it died at 82,000 miles. Temp gauge showed cold, but engine overheated and locked up on I-80 in Gary, IN. It was 2 weeks past the warranty. After a $200 tow charge, we were told the engine needed replaced for $10,500. Lexus gave us the engine, but it still cost $3,000 in labor. Lexus offered no explanation as to cause, and declined further help. The dealership was wonderful, however. We have also had chronic problems with dash lights. We thought Lexus was bulletproof. We won't buy another one.

This is my second RX300. I had a 1999 and now drive a 2001 with the Navigation system. The Navigation system is accurate to within about 5 feet. Impressive!! It's great in Minnesota winters; very sure-footed. Great sound system, very comfortable, nice high ride that feels like a car. I drive a lot of miles and I feel very safe in this SUV.

RX300-What's There Not to Like!

This is my second RX300 (my previous was a 1999), and if Lexus keeps it up, I may never switch to another vehicle! It rides comfortably and drives instinctively. The gas mileage is superb for a SUV its class--19mph. On REGULAR gas! This is for around town in the Washington Metro area! The styling is appealing and the High Intensity Discharge Headlights are great.

Since 1999, I have found this to be the best looking vehicle on the road. Apparently, so does everyone else as you can see one every time you're stopped at an intersection! I was between this car and the Acura MDX, and this car basically won out due to looks and the slightly more luxurious interior. The acceleration is slower than what I'm used to with luxury sedans, but you can get it going when you really need to. Very comfortable ride, and I just love driving this car. I'm only 28, so I guess I'm young for this car, but I don't care. I just love it.

The only glitch so far has been a defective driver door hinge (covered by Lexus). The Lexus experience has been wonderful.

I love my Lexus. I'm 21 so I get all sorts of strange looks from older people with the same car. The stereo is loud, really loud, but lacks bass. and one more thing.. for the price differance its way WAY better then a Highlander. Never drove a X5 or a ML series, can't afford so never tried. As for a MDX i didn't like the looks as much as a RX300, i was going for luxury not a off-road vehicle. If its like that i would have got a Yukon or a Durango. But this is my opinion and if you don't agree thats just your taste.

Pretty good car. Still trying to get use to poor design of radio/climage control. Quality of paint is not nearly as good as European cars.

This is our third suv and all I can say is wow, did extensive inquiries and shopping. The Accura was a close second, the Mercedes-Benz did not even come close in the ride, looks and comfort of the Lexus. A deffinate plus was the relationship with the dealership, they could not have been better. Very knowledgeable, concerned and helpfull.

The quality, the ride, and the salesmanship of the this Lexus became the only reason why I purchase this vehicle. Owning this vehicle for less than 1 month, the enjoyment that I got from it is second to none. Perfect seat support, quiet and smooth ride, silky smooth engine (though it is only a 3.0L), center information panel (either you love it or you hate it), and the second to none Lexus service and salesman attitude. If I decide to buy another car, Lexus will be my first choice.

Overall, this vehicle is a dream come true and VERY worth the money. The handling is superior. Luxurious interior and comfortable ride. Rear seating is roomy. Front window is large so vision is unobstructed. Wipers are too slow. The audio controls leave a lot to be desired. Heater is slow to heat up, but the heated seated make up for it. Too much road noise. I had a Grand Cherokee Ltd V8 but the Lexus mpg is barely better with a V6. Could use a V8 option, but the V6 is okay. The fit and finish is superior. Wonderful experience at dealership.

This is my second RX300 and it just gets better. I leased a 1999 for 39 months and loved it, hated to give it up. So I leased a 2002 and love it even more. It feels more refined and just gets better and better. TRY ONE!!!!!

Bought this car last Sept. brand new -- and I couldn't be happier. Very smooth, great acceleration & handling, awesome brakes and sound system and comfort... Love sitting up higher and great cargo space in the back. And this is AFTER owning a 98 Mercedes E320 sedan - No comparison!! And yes, I'm a chick , and it's definitely a chick car!!!

Nice overall vehicle for the money. But noise is definitely noticeable for a luxury car on highways. Serious improvements needed in engine power. Vehicle actually starts losing speed fast while going uphill. Transmission shifting is not as smooth as touted in reviews.
