So I purchased my ES300 about too years ago with 109K already on the clock. She was mint condition and had one owner..She was flawless even with the mileage and years on her. I purchased her and never looked back! To date she has ran flawlessly, always their when I need her. I had one time where she did not start and it was because of a bad battery, slapped a new one in and she fired right up! Lexus really built this car for the long haul, Sheila (My ES300) currently has 129K on her and each mile has been timeless on her. She continues to get better with time. I plan on driving her until she tells me, I can't go any further! LONG LIVE THE ES300 I love her!!!

I have always steered clear of Lexus thinking it was more hype then anything. But I bought a 2002 ES 300 with 90k on it. In 6 months I have already taken it over 100k with trips to Dallas from Houston and also Houston to Chicago. It has performed really good. I have a couple issues the cup holders broke, the interior trunk/gas release doesn't work and the cd player jams occasionally but considering the car is 8 years old and has over 100k miles I can't really complain. It's quiet. Rides smooth and has averaged 23 mpg pretty much since I got it. Avg almost 30 mpg on the road. All in all a very nice vehicle that seems like it last quite a while. My previous ride was an 07 m35.

I love this car. It is comfortable and has a beautiful interior (burgundy and wood). The rear window shade keeps the car cooler in the SC summer heat. Great on long trips, heated seats great for back pain plus gets good mileage (30mpg). City driving mileage around 18-19 mpg.

constant suspension problems but overall been a great car and still going smoothly with over 200 thousand miles! suggest only oem parts, they can be a little pricey but worth the money if you don't want to replace it again shortly down the road

This is our 3rd lexus, and each one has been wonderful! You can't beat the price and perfection that lexus offers. Any lexus easily can recieve 200,000 miles or more and run like a charm. The ES-300 is unmatchable by german auto-makers. This car is truely a nice riding mid-sized luxury riding machine period.

How to Fix Trunk Release Button

We recently bought a 20 year-old 2002 Lexus ES300. It's in excellent condition and has only 146K miles on the odometer. Way down near knee level on the left side of the dashboard are buttons to open the trunk and the gas cap cover. I noticed the trunk release button wasn't working. The user manual advised me to look in the upper left corner of the open glove compartment. There's a push-button there to enable/disable the trunk release button. I pushed it in and the trunk release button on the lower left side of the dashboard now works perfectly.

As cars go I've always been a Caddy, Chrysler guy- After I drove an '02 ES, I bought one. Everything about it is super. This car does not drive, it "hovers" above the rode. It's nimble, luxurious, solid, packed with amenities and has 95,000 miles!!! Before turning the car over to me, the dealership performed the 90K service package, replaced the timing belt, water pump, and threw on 4 new Michelins (even though they didn't need it). I'm totally won over to Lexus and it will take quite a vehicle to change auto choices again. It's so QUIET!!!

This is the smoothest car I've ever driven. The inside styling would make you think your in a $70k car. Bought this car certified from Lexus at 44,000 miles. Now has around 50,000 miles and all have been trouble free. I also have a '98 ES300 that's a great car too. It has 130k miles and still drives like a dream.

This is my first Lexus ever. I test drove other competitive cars and found this car is the best. There was nothing to compare. Comfort, design (especially interior) and size. The best part was comfort and reliability. As you know Lexus can run 200,000 miles very easily. It drives like a heaven.

I was so impressed with the ownership experience of my 00 RX 300 that I had to buy another Lexus. The exterior impresses friends and looks like a 70k+ Mercedes or Bimmer. Extremely powerful, reliable, and great gas mileage. Interior leather and wood trim really make the car. VSC, traction control, ABS brakes, and eight airbags really offer peace of mind. I would highly recommend this vehicle to someone who wants efficiency of a family sedan with a Mercedes S class feel. I would not drive anything else but a Lexus. My next car will be a lexus too.

I'm writing this review as the THIRD generation owner of my 2002 silver lexus ES300. I'm currently shopping for an SUV, but I'm NOT letting go of my lexus. She's the best. I thought I'd contribute my experience while I'm searching other forums (currently looking at Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Mercedes GLK 350). As I mentioned, this car has been through three family members, and we bought it used! I STILL get compliments on how stylish, luxurious, and comfortable my car is. As I write we have NEVER had a major issue. The only time I have had it in the shop (besides regular maintenance and replacement of time belt, 200,000 strong!) was when my ignition locked up, because I over-parked and turned the wheel too far.. it was no big deal, but the AAA person in my area wasn't skilled in unlocking, so they just had to take off dash and reset, it's apparently a common problem, but it only happened once and I'm confident that it was my over-park that caused it. I'm keeping my car and won't let go until the wheels fall off! If you're shopping for a comfortable, reliable, yet stylish/flashy car, this is the one. I will always praise my lexus experience! If it weren't for these crazy new body styles I would 100% be upgrading to a newer lexus. I will wait it out a few years for these fads to pass and buy again once they come back to their classic styles.

ought car from private party with 14K miles--noted on first long trip that car shuddered when braking at highway speed. Took it in--needed new rotors. I had read that Lexus was having problems with the brakes, especially rotors. Dealership (Concord Lexus) replaced the brake pads and rotors @ no charge to us. Shocking note from dealer that rear tires will need replacing soon--only 14, 300 miles on them and no abuse. Toyo tires, another warrenty issue, we hope. Nice car---but the transmission is not smooth and it hesitates when you need to move out in a hurry. Not powerful, good gas mileage, great interior. No rattles---yet!

I am a residential real estate agent showing property all the time in the Atlanta area. I get all kinds of positive comments from my passengers of how well this car rides over most all terrains. After the break-in period I have noticed the performance and gas mileage improve. It handles well, but after my Audi A6, I can tell it is not a sports car nor a Quattro gripper. For my business and personal pleasure, it handles quite supurbly. Quiet, comfortable, solidly built. There is ample room for average sized people in the back seat. The local dealers treat me like royalty both in sales and service and that will drive me right back there for my next one.

I purchased a used 2002 last year with 53000 mile on it. It was a trade in at a local Mercedes Benz dealership here in S. Cal. Beautiful car, nice ride, great performance. However the driver seat is not made for people with long legs. The seat is short and the 6 way power seat does not allow the front of the seat to be raised enough for leg support or to be comfortable. Sadly this is not the kind of thing you discover until you are on a road trip. My other car is a 94 E 320 Benz, which I actually prefer driving due to the size shape and angle of the seat. I have noticed this issue with other Japanese luxury cars as well.

It's so easy to love a Lexus

I've owned Audis, BMWs, Saabs, and many Japenese and American cars and by far this is the best car I have ever owned. It's also my second Lexus with the first having been a '98 that still ran perfect at 160,000 miles when I traded her. Sure there is some truth about the drive-by-wire delay but it's ever so slight and I got used to it within a day and I'm about as fickle at they come. I urge anyone who wants sportiness, reliability, luxury, and just plain old grinning ear to ear every time they get behind the wheel to buy a Lexus ES. You can't go wrong with a used Lexus either as they present one hell of a value.

My wife's choice. Definitely not the place to look for sportiness, but for a relaxed, comfortable ride that's roomy and reliable - very tough to beat. Fuel economy pretty doggone decent for a car of its size. The price of getting it CPO was right up with a new Camry, but we made the right choice. Traded it in today for a CPO 2006 ES330. Sad to see it go, but not so sad we didn't get basically the same car in a different color (albeit with heated/cooled seats!!). Figured if I was going to drop $1000 for a timing belt, why not just upgrade? Some tires ride nice but wear fast, so be careful.

This car looks good and drives just as well. It's reliability is tops and comfort and freedom from road noise is a delight. The only downsides worthy of mention is there should have been more attention paid to an owner's need to override the default settings of many details (like the loudness of the directional signals or the duration of the headlights on after leaving the car).

The Maytag of Cars!

My ES300 had about 9K miles on it when purchased 11/2003 and now has 40,523 miles and has been the Maytag of cars. In addition to regular scheduled service, the only outlay has been new tires and (battery which was replaced under warranty about a month ago). Lexus sent road-side service with a fresh one and literally 5 minutes later upon arrival it was good to go again. The tires were expensive costing about $900 for Michelins or $1200 for Bridgestone and I highly recommend the latter designed for the car. The Michelins do not handle as well at highway speeds and adversely affected the driving pleasure in my opinion.

This is a powerful vehicle but is not at all quick off the starting line. The adaptive variable suspension works well and responds to the driver's mood. The ride quality is truly "creamy". Braking distances are very competitive. If you can afford the Mark Levinson sound system, you won't regret it.

Bought my 2002 in 2003 from the dealer with 11k miles on it. The vehicle was used as a test drive/ loaner/ salesperson vehicle. I now have 181k on it. Without exaggerating, it runs almost as it did the day I pulled it out of their dealership. I remember bringing the car in to Lexus service some 10 years after I purchased it. The service personnel told me ‘off the record’ that the 300 engine was the best engine Toyota ever produced, but he added, ‘you didn’t hear that from me’. I still get 20/21 MPG local suburban driving and 25/26 when I use it for highway driving. I’ve replaced the starter twice. Those were the only two times my vehicle needed to be towed. Never even had a flat, original spare still intact. I use synthetic oil every 5k. Don’t beat on it. Here’s hoping for another 181k miles of happy motoring.

I bought my ES300 against my wife's objection. We have always been Benz fan and my last car was S320. Let me tell you my friends, this car actually runs smoother and quieter that my last benz. Fits and finishes are first class and Valencia Lexus service is better than any dealership I've ever been. To be honest, I am disappointed with the declining quality and service of Mercedes benz. even my wife is thinking of getting RX330 when it comes out next year.

This is our second Lexus. Love the exterior design and interior design as well. Really sharp car. Has all the bells and whistles anyone could need. Somewhat sluggish though on pickup. There is definitely a computer problem with the transmission. Seems to have trouble - at times - deciding what gear it needs to be in. Lexus is aware of problem with the 2002 ES300, but has not been able to come up with a solution as yet.

I've had my ES300 for about 2 months now. I love it except for the fact that I had to take it back 6 time to get rid of a rattle comming from the passenger door. (After sending out a factory engineer, it was determined that the car needed re-welding.)While they were at it, Lexus also got rid of a couple other rattles. Rattles notwithstanding, however, this is truly a wonderful car to drive.

Many positives about this car BUT, transmission is such an integral part of a car, and this one is lousy for a car of this price. The engine and transmission seem to have trouble communicating on a downshift, when you are cruising in the 40-55mph range, transmission seems to keep searching for the right car, up then down, then up etc..Spoke with Lexus customer service and they said they have a few complaints but have no intention for any fixes at this time... This is strange because my dealer told me he had more than 15 complaints on this issue..Not acceptable for a luxury crusier sedan

I throughly enjoy driving the vehicle and even on long travels, it is quite comfortable and offers many features. The interior finish is typical Lexus (the very best) and the car drives flawlessly for the most part. I have had many cars and continue to enjoy driving the ES 300 more than the previous vehicles. I traded in a 2000 Acura RL to get the ES and had previously tested the Audi A4, BMW 3 & 5 Series, and the Acura TL. One other point to make about he Lexus ES 300. As with other Toyotas I have owned, they are extremely reliable and if they are maintained, can be driven for several hundred thousand miles.

I traded a 2000 E430 that was a disaster. What I like about this car is that is drives comfortable. The ride is smooth and appears well made. it lacks pep. Another 50 hours would be nice. Transmission should be more smooth. Less roll on turns would be nice. The dealer is obsessed with outstanding service! The do things right!

I have been very pleased with the car and the dealership service. I had also bought my wife's RX300 from the same dealership, Sterling McCall in Houston, TX. It have very please and it exudes pure luxury. Also, while it is not sporty like a BMW, etc. it is plenty fun to drive around town. It will make you question the justification for the higher prices of the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class can be so much more expensive. I have not had any of the transmission problems mentioned on the message boards.

Truely a wonderful car mid luxury car, but it needs more power. That is the only thing that detracts from its "fun to drive" score. Interior is very comfortable and the Nav system is great. Except for power it is a very major improvement over the previous model.

If you need a dependable good looking vehicle. Then the Lexus ES300 is perfect for you. This car is faster than what most people say. This car just is all around smooth luxorious ride. If you want a race car then I would stay away from it. Navigation is a must.

I have been dring the Es300 for about 3 months and the car gets better and better. It is more quieter than the bmw 300 series and better performance than a volvo 60. I was suprised to see a company with a short history can make this kind of car.Im very satisfied with this machine and planning to purchase more cars from Lexus.

I was torn between the value of the Acura S TL and the sheer comfort to the Lexus ES300. The Acura was faster, sportier, but gee I just sold my SVT Cobra Convertable. So I knew what performance was all about and the Acura can't hold a prayer against SVT. So I spent more money for comfort, Audio, smooth ride and it was the best decission I've made in a long time.

Although I do like this vehicle, I have to say it totally lacks 'get up and go'. It has major hesitation when trying to pick up speed QUICKLY such as getting on an interstate or crossing a lane(s)rapidly to get out of traffic's way. It has stalled badly in critical situations. I know in the years subsequent to 2002 the engine has been upgraded to a 3.3 litre but I just wonder if .3 is enough to do the job. I doubt I would ever buy another ES unless that engine was significantly bigger--

I recently purchased a 2002 Lexus ES 300 with the Navigation Package. This was my first dealing with a luxury dealership, and I can definitely say the experience _much_ more pleasant than with other manufacturers. Overall the car is superb. The new exterior styling compliments the stunning interior. The Lexus DVD Navigation system really gives the car a hi-tech feel, and the suspension absorbs nearly all the bumps the road can throw at you.

Transmission and Brakes

My brakes had to be replaced at around 15,000 miles due to warped rotors. This also meant replacing the tires. Fortunately Lexus covered the cost. I just had them replaced again at 39,500 miles, at my cost. Was told that the area I live in is to blame since it is slightly mountainous. My husband has 70,000 miles on an 02 Yukon and has never had brake problems. I also would have like a smoother shift in the transmission. They did the computer changeover, but it is no better. When I took it in last I was told the brake replacement at 14K+ was a recall. When I called Lexus I was told there had never been a recall on the 02 Lexus.

The Lexus Myth

The impulse acquisition of this Lexus from a good TV ad on the GPS (the Lexus came with it) was a poor decision on my part. I stepped down from Mecedes Benz and/ Seville quality. My "Lexus owning business associates" encouraged me to switch brands. "The're dependable and never in the shop!" In the first year they replaced the front brake rotors two times. I kept remarking about the engine/transmission match up and the "hesitation on acceleration/pausing, but was assured that I had a great imagination. It was recalled by a Lexus letter at a later date. The backs of the leather front seats would depart when the electric seat adjustment were initiated.I am happy back in a Mercedes Benz.
