Could be better

I want to like my Kona but I find there are too many glaring faults. I have owned my car now for almost ten months. I live in Canada and have the 2.0 "Luxury" AWD so leather, sunroof, bigger wheels, heated seats, steering wheel etc. My Kona has the base engine. It is underpowered and the transmission can leave you in the lurch at times. I live in a "very" hilly place, Torbay Newfoundland. Because of the terrain the engines weakness really comes though. It is especially an issue when driving from a stop and during roll on acceleration at higher speeds especially when going uphill. The cargo space with rear seat up is simply too small for me. If you were single and left your trunk space clear it might be okay, but I don't and find it could be at least a third bigger. It is plasticy inside. But more that this, the plastic seems overly cheap/brittle. I owned a 2010 RAV4 before this and it's plastic seemed much sturdier and scratch resistant. It is nice that three drive modes are available , eco, normal and sport. But the car is in eco or defaults to eco always and you cannot change this. I find this very irritating as I want to leave it in normal or at least start off in normal all the time. Eco is too wimpy especially for hills. Changing this mode, while just a simple button press, is a pain. The headlights on this car are very weak. When driving sometimes you might wonder of they are even on. They are much weaker than the majority of cars on the road. Interior buttons are well laid out and easy to use. Android Auto makes doing what is needed easy however the actual buttons and knobs don't seem built to last. I guess I will see, but when compared to my RAV4 they do seem fragile. The stereo sound is on the weak side. Okay but definitely nothing to write home about. I could see many finding the seats to small. Also, if front passengers are a bit tall then there is no room in the back seat. I am five foot eleven and drive with my seat in an upright position with my body closer to the steering wheel than most and still there is really no room behind me for a rear passenger. Torbay has much cold and humidity. The fan/defroster is weak. This combined with the singular centralized vent for the windshield makes for poor defog/defrost. The center vent while wide does not stretch side to side as far as it should so outside edges of the windshield do not get effectively defogged or defrosted. Some of the safety features while good can be distracting or annoying. It may be most new cars are like this but I have never had a car beep at me more than the Kona. Things like if I get out with the key in my pocket while the engine is running to clear the windshield, or when in reverse and not moving but there is anything behind me. Safe I suppose but annoying. The rear backing camera is exposed to the elements and gets dirty very easy so I have to clean it off quite a bit. It is very good however as is the bigger screen inside. This camera is the one advanced driver assist system in the vehicle I enjoy. The rest of this I could happily do without. Gas mileage is okay but nothing special. I am guessing the hills, winds and cold of Newfoundland take their toll on such a small underpowered car. With quality winter tires as I have it is quite good in the snow/ice. I like that I can lock it in four wheel drive as I could my RAV4. This is a good feature when entering or exiting an icy driveway. Unfortunately I have to say that the Kona is mediocre. There are a lot of features for the money but most of these features do not impress me and when it comes to the basics, how it drives, how well it's made (quality parts) and effectiveness of systems I feel it could be better.
