Reliability too dependent on Infotainment System

2023 GMC Canyon Denali 4dr Crew Cab 4WD SB (2.7L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

At first sight, the new Canyons are slick & beautiful. Interior design is updated & eye catching. I purchased the Denali 4 wheel drive, 2.7L 4 cylinder turbo charged 310HP high output engine with 430lbs torque, 20" mags, a 2" factory lift, spray in bed liner, Sunroof, heated/ cooled leather seats, updated radio system (infotainment system) 11" screen, included side steps, etc. The engine output is great, good p/u & power. Surprisingly strong for a 4 cylinder engine. But I wonder if GM overthought or prematurely relied on 'too much too soon' on the reliability of the placing all your controls in the infotainment screen. Almost everything you do within the vehicle is controlled at the infotainment or radio screen. Your headlights, fog lights, HUD, radio, cameras, system checks, trip meters, system over the air updates, etc. Ok, what's wrong with the system. After driving the vehicle for a few days, the infotainment system went black while driving. So no control over the radio, or some vital parts of the system which runs the vehicle. No access to my headlight controls (safety issue). It was near the beginning of early evening. But fortunately, I had set the headlights on automatic. So even though it got dark, the automatic headlights kicked on. So if I had the lights set on manual, no lights. I would have been stuck somewhere on the side of the road. Luckily, later I was able to go onto the forums and find reset solutions for this problem. But the problems vary and the reset solutions don't always work. I have only owned the Denali for 2 1/2 weeks and had 3 (to date) infotainment glitches that are quite concerning. 1. black screen 2. frozen screen (in app mode) 3. flickering screen which also caused the instrument cluster to go from bright to dim and back several times. But over the last week, nothing has happened, The vehicle is running fine with no safety issues. But one never knows when the glitches will start up again. The vehicle will be serviced in a few days for a complete system check. According to the forums, this seems to be a problem for both Chevy Colorado's as well as GMC Canyons. Note: there are no switches on the dash for turning on your headlights. The infotainment system screen is where most of your controls are located. Until this problem is fixed for all, you are relying on reset procedures which eventually will work until the next incident. But what happens when it just goes dead. We aren't even talking about the early buyers who were victims of dead batteries that were drained by a computer glitch in Detroit that was pinging the vehicles for software updates when there were no updates. Kept the vehicle systems on until their batteries went dead. Supposedly has been addressed & fixed. I haven't experienced that, but worries me that it could happen again or who knows if an outsider hacked the system which caused the glitch. Even GM doesn't know how it happened. This could be a great vehicle for those looking to downsize from a big truck, but there is way too much that relies on the electronic brain put into this vehicle. Check the GM forums to see if these problems are prevalent in their other lines of vehicles. *Update: While driving on the freeway, (2:30am - luckily no traffic) infotainment system goes out, shutting off my headlights. No way to get them back on, I was close by an off-ramp and was able to exit with no incident. I had to pull over and shut down the system. Fortunately the reset procedure worked and I was on my way again. Could have been a very dangerous situation if any traffic was present. The latest glitch involved excessive wind noise coming from the front windshield. Apparently, the noise is coming from the top corners of the windshield.and is prevalent when you are on the freeway at speeds over 50mph. Dealer would not help unless they can duplicate the problem. Although they told me to tape off the corners of the windshield to see if that stopped the noise. Well that tells me they are aware of the problem, but won't address it? Well, taping off the corners did stop the problem which GM has to replace the entire windshield and molding, but won't do it until they have time to go on the freeway and duplicate the problem. Wasn't getting any help with this. The another problem showed up. Two large rubber pads or grommets that cushion the hood near the windshield will start flapping loudly with excessive noise when you are driving into the wind on the freeway at speeds in excess of 65mph. And again, dealer is no help. All of these problems are on the GNC Canyon forum. After 6 months of ownership, I got tired of all this and decided I had enough and traded the Canyon in at a minimal loss. No more GM vehicles in my future. By the way, I had an extended warranty and it was pretty tough getting my refund. I had to contact GMC several times to report the dealer. They had my refund in hand for over a month. It took GMC corp to push them to get the refund issued.

Spent a year deciding on what truck I wanted to spend my hard earned money on and decided it would be the Canton AT4. Unfortunately I owned the truck 6 months and only have 5k miles on it when I got a power steering failure warning. Truck has been at the dealer for 30 days. No Parts!! No idea on a time frame. Won’t give me a rental. Extremely poor customer service! Will never purchase a GMC product again.

I ordered a new 2023 canyon AT4,when it came in I was excited. When the sales person was explaining some of the new electronics at the dealership, we couldn't get my i-phone to sync with some of the electronics.Salesman no problem, same thing happened recently to same vehicle, guick fix. That was a month and a half ago.Factory says because it is a new production, they have not made any new parts for them. They said it might take a couple of weeks to get the part. That didn't happen.I have called the G M C factory several times and nobody will give me a time frame for the part production.Seems like General Motors has a serious problem.Very disappointed, if anyone is thinking about a new Canyon I hope you have better luck.

Volcanic Red Heart Throb!

My new GMC Canyon AT4 is simply brilliant. After owning 2 consecutive Chevrolet Colorado Z71s (2016 with the V6 and 2018 with the baby Duramax) which I both loved, I decided to get fancy and go with the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 in Volcanic Red. Let's just say that my new truck is unbelievably comfortable and capable. It might not just be the prettiest truck I have ever owned, it might be the prettiest truck I have ever seen. The exterior couldn't look better if they tried. The interior is incredibly well appointed and it is overflowing with technology. People literally stop and stare at it when they see it. I am also optimistic that it will function fabulously. This mid-sized truck fits perfectly in my garage, on city streets, on on Utah mountain dirt roads. I couldn't be happier.

GMC Got it right

I ordered a GMC Canyon AT4 and got it May 22. I've put about 1800 miles on it. Overall I really like the pickup. I kept my 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500 regular cab long box pickup which has 140,000 miles on it, WT with an LS package. The Canyon is almost the same outside dimensions, just a few inches narrower about 4 inches at the mirrors. Only configuration on Canyon is Crew Cab with short box, 5'2" . The features I really like are the big infotainment screen of 11", the storage area in talilgate, the ability to tow 7700 lbs on a trailer. It rides a little smoother than my Chevy, not quite as good as a car, but that is to be expected. The 2.7l 4 cylinder turbocharged motor seems to have plenty of power. This is max output motor with 430 ft/lbs of torque. Open road driving on Interstates I got between 19 and 20 mpg. On two lane highways running 60 to 65 gets in the 21 to 22 mpg range. I have the LT tires on 18" wheels which EPA claims gets lower MPG, but it doesn't seem like it too me. What is nice is the size works great for running errands in town and the ability to park easily anywhere. I would definitely buy it again.

First off, I will say GM is on point with the styling of the 2023 Canyon. However thier professional grade truck is not so professional grade. The major complaint, and I see many complaints of the same issue, is the paper thin roof panel. Mine is currently dented from the air blower at a drive through car wash. Not an issue with the car wash itself, just the thin roof panel sheet metal. Other brand vehicles taken through same car wash with no issues. So buyer/owner beware of the air blowers. Other issues are cheap interior material which squeaks (door handle) and looks unappealing. Gas filler pop release does not work much of the time. Rough engine at start up. I also experienced a dead battery ay 7000 miles due to software update issue. I cannot recommend this truck due to my experience and other customer reviews. Update 5/28/24. Service department not wanting to fix dented roof panel. A fight to get them to agree to install stiffening patched. Burns over a quart of oil in 5000 miles, told this is normal in newer engines. A number of computer issues. Side mirror warning lights randomly go off with nothing around. Info screen goes out. Truck will surge when put in gear and foot on brake. Door locks will lock and unlock 10 15 times on some start ups. Gas filler door pop does not work well. Just overall poor quality design and workmanship.

I’ve owned an AT4X for just over 6 months now and love the truck! There was an ecu recall/update that my dealer handled and now I’m enjoying slightly better fuel economy. Ride quality is excellent on road and my limited experience with the truck off road and in snow has been outstanding. The transmission shifts properly and the truck provides plenty of power. I do think GM could have done better with driver and passenger door storage but that’s nitpicking. So far so good. A+ GM.

I researched the midsize trucks for months before settling on the AT4 Canyon. I think the looks, especially interior, are better than any other truck in the category, HOWEVER, it has an issue with the battery draining overnight. Bought the truck in July 23. Battery died October, December, March, and April. The last time was 8 days back from the dealer. On all three dealer trips, they reprogrammed the Serial Data Gateway Module., which was causing the battery to drain during failed Over the Air updates. It obviously is not that. Fact is GM has no idea what it is, but just won't say that. It's across numerous platforms too. I have a friend with a 23 Silverado and he has numerous infotainment issues. He said Chevy guys actually said we don't know what is is, but please be patient while we figure it out. Stay away from these trucks!

Awesome Tacoma alternative

Being my 52nd vehicle and first GMC, I can say without a doubt the build quality, quietness, driveability and overall awesomeness is top notch. The people that come up to me and ask about it is crazy, full size truck guys, Tacoma guys, and other small truck owners are all very curious about my at4. Yes I know that people complain about the headlight button not being physical but two things about that, they put a "cheat button" on top of the touchscreen that you can hit and see all light options and two, in the millions of miles I've driven and all the years and vehicles I've had since they've added the auto light button I may have turned my actual lights on maybe half a dozen times. So once they're set to auto I don't ever really ever think about it. Other than that, it rides like an SUV, and is as quiet as one too. There's really not much to love. I don't really care about gas mileage as it is a truck and if I wanted something with great gas mileage I'd have bought a small sedan. But I will say by running premium in it I have been averaging 23mpg so it's not terrible. I love the look of the 2024 TRD Pro Tacoma coming out but do not care for the look of any of the lower model 2024 tacomas. That being said this is a solid buy. At 310hp and as much torque as the outgoing diesel it has plenty of power, can tow 7700 lbs.

I love love love my GMC Canyon AT4. I had a Ram 1500 Laramie which I really loved. It was just too big so I wanted a midsize truck which Ram did not offer. After looking at the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Tacoma I decided to go with the Gmc Canyon. Definitely no regret. The more I drive it the more I love it. I have driven it over 2000 miles in 6 weeks and not one ounce of trouble.

I've always been a full size truck guy. I've owned nothing but 1500 Silverados or Sierras my entire life. I have a 2012 Silverado 2500HD extended cab I use for work, it rides and handles so rough at higher speeds it wasn't a fun drive to load the kids up and go anywhere that wasn't within 20 minutes of the house (not to mention limited space and getting about 10mpg). I've always liked the look of the canyon and considered getting one so I could have room for wife & kids and not have to remove all my work tools from my truck everytime I needed to load them up. When GMC came out with the new style of the canyon, I knew immediately that's what I wanted. In my opinion it's the best looking mid size truck on the road. I bought the AT4 with trailer package. People are always coming up to me complimenting me on it, and asking questions. It rides better & quieter than any truck I've ever owned, even better than my wifes 2021 grand cherokee. It also has more interior room than my other truck, though the silverado was an extended cab the passenger had to slide their seat almost all the way forward due to the car seat for my toddler in the back. On my new canyon, the front passengers don't even have to adjust the seat when they get in due to the carseat in the back. The interior has plenty of room. My wife and I recently drove it to the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee for our anniversary (about 600 miles) and it operated flawlessly with plenty of power. Alot people feel it should get better fuel mileage for a midsize truck, but for me 18-21 mpg is twice what my 2500HD was getting and was a non-issue for me. The only issue I've had is my phone wouldnt connect on the 2nd day after I got it. Turned out to be an upgrade issue that my truck hadn't received yet due to it being parked in the garage. One I backed it out of the garage, the radio upgraded the software and I've had zero issues since. I'm at 8,000 miles and couldn't be happier with this truck so far.

Extremely Disappointed

I recently purchased a 2023 GMC Canyon with high hopes and expectations, but my experience has been nothing short of a nightmare. At just 317 miles on the odometer, the dreaded check engine light illuminated, signaling the beginning of a seemingly endless cycle of issues. First and foremost, it's baffling that a brand-new vehicle would already experience such a critical problem. One would assume that GMC had thoroughly tested their vehicles before releasing them to the market, but my unfortunate experience proves otherwise. Upon contacting the dealership, they assured me that they would take care of the issue under warranty. However, the inconvenience of having to bring in a brand-new vehicle for repairs is unacceptable. Not to mention, I had to deal with the inconvenience of arranging alternate transportation during the time it took to fix the problem. Moreover, this incident has left me with lingering doubts about the overall reliability of the 2023 GMC Canyon. If such a significant problem arises at such low mileage, what other troubles can I expect down the road? The peace of mind that comes with owning a new vehicle has been shattered, and I now question the trustworthiness of GMC's engineering and quality control. In conclusion, my experience with the 2023 GMC Canyon has been nothing short of a disappointment. The check engine light at only 317 miles was a frustrating and disheartening experience, casting doubt on the vehicle's reliability and the brand's commitment to quality. I would caution anyone considering purchasing this model to think twice and thoroughly research their options before making a decision. GMC needs to step up its game and regain the trust of its customers through improved quality control and better customer service.

Looks great. Sporty. Engine is quick. Mileage is no better my last V8 Gmc full size. Disappointing. Last truck was 19 Gmc Sierra Denali. Canyon rides very stiff and bouncy. If your tall you won't like the lack of head room when entering or existing. No.power mirrors. Rear window is not power. Does not have sky window. Very poor storage spaces inside. Back seats are almost unusable. Kids only. Adults won't fit. No room. Won't buy another. Will get full size next time. Much better than Canyon. Was really looking forward to Canyon but very disappointed.. UPDATE: Very stiff (bouncy) ride on small bumps etc. Ok as long on smooth roadway, So is a tractor LOL. Entry is terrible for tall person. Very hard to enter and exit. Annoying. Must be a contortionist to get in. Mileage is lousy considering its a 4 cyl. 17 mph is the best I've seen. I got a Denali assuming it would have the same options as previous full size Denali. It doesn't. No power fold in mirrors. No power rear window. MANUEL only. No sunroof. No power tailgate open. Very little interior storage. Backseat unusable for adults. Too small. Overall about 50 % satisfied. Next truck will definitely be full size!

I've owned a Tacoma TRD Off-Road for 9 years prior to purchasing my 2023 Canyon AT4X. Clearly the Tacoma is one of the best trucks ever made. However, GMC has built a super solid mid-sized truck that you can tell was very well thought out and executed. It checks all of the boxes and more than even the new Tacoma. Toyota is legendary for its reliability so time will tell on this new Canyon.

I had a brand new 2023 Canyon AT4 in beautiful blue. But it was a problem truck from the beginning. It started with the heads up display, when I started it, it was a toss up as to whether it would come on or not. If it was on, it would stay on till I shut it off. If it was off ,it would stay off till I shut the truck down and then start it back up to see what it was going to do again. Dealer and reps could never figure it after about 9 attempts. I asked GM to buy it back, it was denied twice after 10 months of bull crap. They had it in the dealership almost more than I had it to drive. The more they tore into it, the more problems started to happen. I finally had to contact our Michigan Attorney General to get involved. About a week after that they settled to buy it back at almost full price including fees. I know of another person with a 2025 AT4 that are having many problems also. GM needs better quality control on these trucks.
