This Truck Really Gets Me

Hill Pratt, 07/26/2024
2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST 4dr Crew Cab 4WD SB (electric DD)

I wanted a EV pickup that would do it all... and I found it. I have a side business making furniture, so I need to haul 10-11 foot boards. Try that in a Rivian or any other EV. The RST mid-gate makes it easy. I also love the luxuriously excessive range. One day I started at 80% charge, trailered 120 miles (Supercruise takes a lot of stress out), took my wife to the big city for dinner another 120 miles, and still had 30% on the battery. Most days I don't charge at all. To this point, I've never been in the position of having to plan my activities around the need to charge, which means a lot--who wants to be a slave to their vehicle's need. As far as the complaints about the interior not being posh enough, it sure works for me. I'm out in the country, so I track mud, dirt, grass and sawdust into my truck all of the time. I need something that can handle a little abuse and still clean up nice. Chevy's all-weather floormats provide total protection. The modern look of the truck projects power and sophistication. It doesn't attract the attention of the Cybertruck (which I nearly bought instead), but I did have a conversation with a nice couple in a supermarket parking lot yesterday who were mystified when I put my groceries where the motor should be... plus I don't really need to be the center of attention all the time. The acceleration is violent. I know there are faster zero-to-60s with the Cyberbeast, but when I have the nerve to push the accelerator all the way down for a couple of seconds in WOW mode the adrenaline rush, headache and nausea are perfectly sufficient for me. If I could accerate faster, I wouldn't want to. I'm not a techno-geek, but the many features--camera views, drive modes, parking assist, height, etc. are fun to play with. And, Super Cruise is fantastic! It doesn't have blind spots, changes lanes aggressively in traffic to get me to my destination as fast as I want it to, and always pays attention. I feel safer when it's driving... and it's relaxing to watch it do its thing. I don't worry about money at this time of my life, so I was able to buy the truck I wanted, and this was the one. There are certain things that the Rivian or Cybertruck can do better (or faster), but the things the Silverado RST does that the others can't makes this the best (and maybe only viable) option for me. Owning it for a few weeks has only made me love it more. It just makes me want to go places.

Only had a few weeks, to early to give a long term review. So far it's been a great truck. You guys that will pull a trailer with trailer brakes, need to turn off one pedal drive. One pedal drive turn on brake light when you slow down & the trailer brakes will activate. When hooking the trailer up, turn off parking assist. It's been a year still love the truck. I've Tow over 5000 lb. distance 120 miles you can make that distance with 80% charge I'm in the Houston area very flat, in hills or mountains you may need to make adjustments. I tow this once a month, so to save on battery life I don't charge to 100%. I pull at about 70 mph, to go further slow down to 60 mph & the computer will update your miles. With a load that heavy you can leave one pedal drive on the trailer will not chatter when you lift. I would like more control on charging times. I changed my Elec. plan to free nights, I would like to tell the truck to charge 8pm. to 6am.

Update 6/26/25 - Good so far but...

2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV LT Extended Range 4dr Crew Cab 4WD SB (electric DD)

I've had the 2025 LT a couple of days and so far as a truck it's decent. I bought it because of the range, bi-directional charging and towing capacity (12,500 on LT) but as an EV it's seriously behind Tesla on the software side. Truck has multiple cameras but no dash cam, 17" screen is a marketing gimmick, lucky if it actually uses 12", no sentry mode, no dog mode, no ability to reduce charging amps (I live off grid and this thing instantly drained my inverter trying to pull 32 amps). Basic stuff my Tesla has done for many years. And from what I understand, very few if any OTA updates. Wake up legacy auto makers, it's all about the software experience as much as the mechanical experience. Hopefully these easy fixes are implemented. Then it will be 5 star. They haven't improved any of the software issues but as a truck it's been good. I've had no issues in the 6 months I've owned it and it's probably the most comfortable vehicle I've ever owned (out of more than 30). It tows flawlessly (I pulled a 7000lb travel trailer more than 1600 miles) although range suffers significantly with such a brick. Down to 0.9 miles/kWh from 2.23 advertised not towing. Driving in the CO mountains at gentle speeds results in slightly better mileage. Overall I'm very impressed and would buy it again.

Boat Dealership Towing Champion

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Work Truck Fleet 4dr Crew Cab 4WD SB w/4WT (electric DD)

We purchased two 2024 Silverado EV 4WT with 450 mile 200 kWh battery. Its perfect as we tow 12,000 miles annual 7,000 lbs and under boats for our businesses. Our typical day is 40 miles but we spend four months of the year towing 120 miles daily. The 20%-80% healthy Lithium-Ion Battery rule means we charge to 360 miles capacity, and we consume "240 miles" (2x Reg Miles) towing 120 miles. We are recharging around 25%. Perfect! We purchased the 80 amps 19.6 kWh capable PowerShift Charger, which takes about 6 hours on Winter Storage and Spring Launch heavy use periods. On regular 40-miles days, we just utilize the Level 1 (12 amps 1.4 kWh) Charging that came with the trucks. This takes overnight to recharge fully to 80%. The Trucks will tow to 10,000 lbs. GM built the perfect trucks for our usage!

Surprisingly small learning curve

We took possession on a Tuesday and left on an 1,800 mile trip on Wednesday. Our first EV long distance experience. Fuel comparison with F250 diesel for same trip a couple of years ago, electric costs about equal to diesel for the trip. Trip was way less stressful and pleasant. When back home fueling this evening will be significantly less at home and overall maintenance cost will be less 5% of what F250 was costing.
