Acura's New Concept Has Billionaire Doors and Previews Incoming Production Cars

Acura's Nexera Vision concept is a look at what's coming, but those doors likely won't make it to a production car anytime soon

Edmunds Says: Acura's Nexera Vision concept will be shown at this year's Monterey Car week, and we only hope reaction to it is strong enough that Acura puts something like this into production.

In just a few years, your next Acura could (loosely) resemble this sporty new concept, the Nexera Vision. As the name implies, it is intended as a vision of Acura's future, a look at what's coming next from the brand, at least from a visual perspective. The concept emphasizes a sleeker look than current models, with a long dash-to-axle ratio and a swept design with lots of glass.

Designed under Acura's new creative director and vice president of auto design, Yasutake Tsuchida, the concept's styling will influence upcoming models starting with the new RDX Hybrid. Acura says this will happen in the "coming years." Given that the RDX's current iteration debuted in 2019, we're expecting the updated version within the next two years.

More likely than not, the item everyone will see most repeated on production cars is the concept's new lighting signature. The new headlights and taillights were clearly inspired by Acura's "A" logo. "To reinforce the new Acura styling identity, we developed a unique lighting signature inspired by the Acura 'A' mark — an unmistakable design element created to make this new era of Acura instantly recognizable,” said Tsuchida.

The concept also has a new "phantom lighting" effect hidden behind the bodywork that gives the car some added illumination. When the lights are off, it's like there's nothing there at all, but once they flick on, they're very clearly visible.

Styling aside, Acura looks to emphasize something else with the new Vision concept: performance. At Acura, this means an active rear spoiler, those butterfly doors, and carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes with massive 22-inch center-locking wheels. Not even the most recent NSX offered wheels like that, which means this is destined to be a very high-performance machine — should something like it ever hit the road.

At first glance, those items sound more Lamborghini than Acura, especially considering the coupe's forged carbon-fiber doors, diffuser and aerodynamic elements.

The sporty feel continues inside, where the seats are integrated into the floor to get the driver and passenger lower in the car. Sustainable materials play a role as well, with recycled aluminum, Alcantara synthetic suede and CircuLeather, a leather substitute "designed to support a more circular material lifecycle."

Acura will show the new Nexera Vision concept at The Quail in Monterey, California, on August 14, and again at the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on August 16.
