This is the second 325 I've owned. The first one (2001) had frequent finicky problems besides the major problem of the transmission going out at 55,000 mi. I got the 03 as I figured it was unusual. However after owning this 03 for 2 yrs I will never own another BMW and I can't wait to get out from under this one. When you know the shop manager by first name you know you have a problem. I've never had to have a car in the shop as much as this one. Many many little problems. Nothing major yet but it's only a matter of time. Engine wise and driveability it's a great car, but something is always causing it to be in the shop. I also own a Lexus and NEVER have a problem. Bye Bye BMW

The E46 model is fantastic to drive, even nearing 20 years old. Just make sure you like these cars enough to put time or $ into them and enjoy doing so (like a hobby). Purchased mine used about five years ago with 50k miles and one previous owner. Had researched everything that fails early on these cars and budgeted $5k for the long list. The initial list was completed over time and (aside from regular maintenance) included the entire cooling system, valve cover gasket, new rear coil springs (rusted out), two window regulators, control arm bushings, miscellaneous suspension components, ignition coils and plugs, fuel pump, pads & rotors (twice) and a new battery. I'm a decent mechanic with a garage and tools, but have a solid repair shop as a back-up or for diagnostic help. Now at 75k miles the list continues to grow: leaking oil pan gasket, leaking power steering pressure line, leaking shift shaft gasket, intermittent oil pressure light, another window regulator. But the car looks great, drives superbly, and is very reliable. It makes me smile every time I start the engine. These are great sports sedans just know what to expect if you buy one.

Car is an excellent ride. Only draw back is that most dealers do not have them instock with navigation and most people including me do not want to wait 2-3 months to get one in from Germany...If you have time go early and order one with Nav inside.
