This is my third 3 series, all I can say is they are all awesome! This car is has an unbelievable style along with power, handling and just plain fun to drive. The larger 17 inch rims and sports package definitely turns heads and is a must have for me. Cost for service is a bit high but rarely needed. I found a great independent authorized BMW certified mechanic that does all my work for less than half what the dealer charges. I love this car, buy one and I know you will enjoy for many years!

This is not a car for the average owner. First of all you need to DIY at least 75% or your maintenance or you will PAY dearly. Second, you need to understand that this car is NOT a Honda. It's needy, and it's got its quirks. If you learn its issues and ascribe to "old school maintenance" you'll be just fine. The cooling system on these cars is well documented on the web. Plastic parts need to be replaced about every 60,000 miles. Windows and sunroofs need to be kept lubricated and used judiciously. Don't skimp on lubricant quality and use synthetic oil that conforms to BMW LL-01. The rear axle carrier panel (rear sub-frame floor) can tear out on these cars usually at the left rear. It afflicts mostly '99 and '00 cars with manual trans above 150,000 miles. BMW had a silent recall on this. The fix can approach $6k and involves floor replacement between the rear seat and rear bumper. In some cases if the car is in good condition, BMW will split the cost with the owner. Independent shops will do quicky fixes by welding in small metal plates for $1,500, but to be done correctly it's at least $2,500 using larger metal plates and larger differential carrier bushings. Given good tires (e.g. Michelin Pilots) and shocks (Koni or Bilstein) these are GREAT handling cars that do many things well including autocross and Driver Ed events. The steering feedback and road feel is superb and not matched by many new BMWs. Lightly loaded they'll return 30 mpg highway. If you want a little more horsepower, go looking for a 330i or 330i - ZHP. The latter commands a high price tag even on the used market. The advantage of the 328i from '99 - '00 is a lower price tag than the 330i with nearly the same driving experience. The 328i also has the M52TU engine which does not have the same oil consumption issues often found on high mileage M54 engines used in the later e46 models ('01 and up). As time goes by, finding pristine examples of a 328i ZSP gets more and more difficult.

This is my second BMW, I previously owned a 323i. This is the best 3- series for the money. Although the 330 IS faster and has more torque, I couldn't see paying the additional 5K. The plus side, 328 steering feels better than 330 steering. I've only had the car in the shop once to get some new rotors and brakes. The OEM rotors were squealing everytime I stopped. Did that service at 36K miles at a cost of $800.
