First time posting here from Orlando FL. I own a 2002 Chevy Prizm LSi, 4AT, Gold/beige kinda color w/ tan interior. Has 165,300 miles on it. Pretty reliable I must say. I get 30MPG average. Besides routine maint, i changed the sparks to Iridium, flushed coolant, and fixed a AC leak. Plastics and trim are cheap in this cars, replaced both inside and outside driver side door handles. But i guess ... Read More
I am having an issue with my 2002 Chevy Prizm. After driving home from work the other day my wife went to start the car and it wouldnt turn over. There is one click and then nothin else. Originally I thought it was probably the starter, but after replacin it I get the same thing... The battery is brand new and the alternator is good. The crank shaft pully isnt locked ... Read More
Yes, it has timing chain instead. They do not require replacement as far as I know, reading Haynes manual.Iridium spark plugs for your application can be bought from amazon or rockauto.com for cheaper than some other places. check your local auto parts stores too.But do get NGK or Denso (both made in Japan, OEM plugs) brand only, not any other brand. It does not have to be iridium, if it is iridium you ... Hello there. I have a 2002 Chevrolet Prizm Lsi 1.8L VVTi 4AT with 124,000 miles on it. Bought it used last month, is in great shape for the age/mileage, i was reading the manual and nowhere says Timing Belt, i search online and in Wikipedia says my engine is all aluminum and has a timing chain instead. Does those need to be changed? How often? I also noticed that uses "Iridium" ... Read More
2002 Prizm: Noise when running in gear
Written by: jerrynelse on Jan 26, 2009 6:55:17 PM
thanks for the inputs geoblue and glenpointe. I checked with a local Chevy dealer and their Maintenance schedule recommends changing the manual transmission fluid every 30,000 miles whether mostly local or long distance travel. I have had a lot of cars in my 70 years and I've never heard of changing transmission fluid but I guess I'll start there. The dealer had no experiance changing the fluid in a manual transmission ... On my 2002 Prizm el stripo, (My Wife bought it I didn't)seemed to operate and drive OK,but several months ago it began a rattly noise in drive and at idle. It kept getting worse, so 10 days ago I took it to the local Chevrolet dealer. Several hours later they called and said that the air conditioning compressor was bad and needed replaced. I wasn't having any trouble with cooling but ... Read More
3 speed vs 4 speed auto

I'm thinking about buying a 2001/2002 Prizm but only want one with the 4 speed automatic. How do you visually tell the difference between the two. I'm assuming that very few sellers will have the original window sticker. Is the option code listed on the door as witrh other Chevys? Wish they were still making this car new. 40 MPG in a automatic Prizm beats the hell out of a smaller ... Read More

I bought a used 3-speed 2002 Prizm in April 05 because it was such a deal ($6750 for LSI with 25K, from a local rural Dodge dealer, excellent condition, local owner). I have an 86 mile commute round-trip and the 17-18mpg in my v-8 Chevy Silverado was hurting me at the gas pump. My understanding is that the 3-speed simply lacks the overdrive. You can easily tell which a car has ... Read More

It's been around since Feb 2002! (my car was made in Oct 2001.) So what's the effect on my car, and how to fix?
no, no, no... You don't want to change a fuel filter on a prizm. I had '98 prizm (should be pretty much the same as 2002) and was trying to do it ones. The owners manual shows fuel filter replacement as part of the recommended services. Chevy (or Toyota) managed to locate it somewhere inside the fuel tank. To change the filter you need to take off the fuel tank and ... Read More

I have a 2002 Chevy Prizm w/15k miles. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that my gas milage on highway went from 35mpg to 25mpg in 1 tank. I changed the oil and put in a new air filter. Same problem. Then I used STP super-concentrated fuel injector cleaner. I went back up to 35mpg. Then I filled up again, and I'm back down to 25mpg. I'm using Shell gasoline. ... Read More
I bought a new 2002 Chevy Prizm. it has 700 miles on it. on the sticker, it say 40mpg on highway. i've filled 3 tanks, and i'm only getting 32 mpg. this is 95% highway, no A/C, windows up, tire air pressure at factory recommendations, etc. So how come i'm getting 20% less than what factory says i should be getting? And how to fix it??? THX
i have a new 2002 Chevy Prizm w/700 miles. it pulls to the left. i didnt notice it when i test drove it. but it did when i drove it on the highway for a length of time. took it to the largest Chevy dealership in Northern VA (koons chevy). they did a wheel alignment. now it pulled even more to the left. took it back. they said everything was in ... Anyone buy a 2002 Prizm? Did you get the 0% financing? If so did you also go below MSRP? Just wondering how much Chevy is dealing with the soon to be canceled, well built Prizm.

Which tires are standard on the Prizm? Are they Goodyear Integrity? On our 99 Corolla I thought they were great little tires, though they wore far too quickly, I was happy with the handling/braking/noise etc. Our new 2002 has them as well.... does Chevy go cheaper on the Prizm? Interesting note- In the September 2002 edition of Consumer Guide, it states that BOTH the Prizm AND COROLLA are being discontiued after ... Read More

I bought a new '00 Prizm about 4 months ago. It just sat around for a while though while I knocked out the last few miles on my 1984 Chevy Cavalier (it had 140,000). I sold my Cavalier then for $400 and started driving my new Prizm for work a few months ago. I drive a route for my company and I put on about 4-5000 miles a month. My Prizm ... Read More

At the 2003 all new Toyota Corolla. Unfortunately, Chevy will dicontinue the Prizm model after the 2002 model year, since the all new "Delta" platform Opel based Cavalier will be debuting in Chevy showrooms in late 2002. But here is the kicker.... Both current J-Body cars (Cavalier and Sunfire) will be finally discontinued after the 2002 model year. In 2003, the Cavalier nameplate will comeback once again under a totally different ... Read More
