PALO ALTO, California — Tesla Motors on Wednesday will open its first Michigan Supercharger station, a move that is both practical and symbolic.

The St. Joseph, Michigan location was picked because it will enable owners of the Tesla Model S to travel between Detroit and Chicago without worrying about running out of juice for the electric car.

This is the first of three Tesla Supercharger stations slated to open in the Motor City's backyard, the company said in a media advisory. Tesla has been shaking up the automotive landscape with everything from its vehicle lineup to its approach to selling cars.

The first Michigan Supercharger station is located at 3260 Niles Road in St. Joseph, near the intersection of I-94 and I-196.

Tesla Superchargers allow Model S owners to travel for free between cities along "well-traveled highways in North America," the company says. The network of Supercharger stations has been expanding, further easing concerns about range anxiety.

Edmunds says: Tesla Model S owners can now travel freely between two major Midwest cities.
