INGOLSTADT, Germany — The Audi Q1, a new compact SUV that targets the Nissan Juke, has been confirmed for production, Audi AG said on Monday.

"No word on if we will get this," wrote Joe Jacuzzi, an Audi of America spokesman, in response to an Edmunds query.

The Audi Q1 will begin production here in 2016. No details were provided about pricing, specifications or launch timing.

"It is designed on the basis of the modular transverse engine concept and will round off our Q series at the bottom end," said Rupert Stadler, chairman of the board of management of Audi AG, in a statement.

Audi said the new SUV is part of a broader expansion of the German automaker's product range. Audi said it intends to grow its lineup "from the current 49 to more than 60 models."

Edmunds says: Audi's Q family is growing.
