AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the fastest muscle car ever, with a National Hot Rod Association-certified quarter–mile elapsed time of 11.2 seconds at 125 mph with stock Pirelli P275/40ZR20 P Zero tires, Chrysler said on Friday.

With drag radials, the run dropped to 10.8 seconds at 126 mph, according to the automaker.

The 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat arrives at dealerships in the third quarter of 2014. Pricing has not been announced.

"With the new Challenger SRT Hellcat, we're reaching deep into our history and bringing back the notion from the muscle-car era of the street and strip dual-purpose car," said Tim Kuniskis, president and CEO of Dodge and SRT brands, in a statement on Friday. "Not only can Challenger run 10s on the drag strip, but you can also fit your family and drive cross country."

The car gets the first factory supercharged Hemi engine. The 6.2-liter Supercharged Hellcat Hemi engine churns out 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

Key competitors to the Challenger SRT Hellcat include the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and the 2015 Ford Mustang with the 5.0-liter V8 engine.

Edmunds says: Buyers of the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat will earn significant bragging rights. But the key question remains: How will the competition react to this challenge?
