AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — The fuel-efficient 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pickup truck roared out of the starting gate, with an impressive number of initial orders and an "overwhelming response" from consumers, Chrysler announced on Wednesday.

The truck is expected to begin shipping to dealerships in March.

Customers who special order the truck will have priority in the build at the factory. Orders for dealer stocking will be filled once sold customer orders are filled.

"It's every truck manufacturer's dream to have this kind of initial order demand for a product," said Reid Bigland, president and CEO of Ram Truck Brand, in a statement.

Between the afternoon of February 7 and the morning of February 10, Ram Truck received more than 8,000 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel orders, which quickly filled the initial allocation.

"Even more surprising is the amount of orders already paid for by customers — twice the corporate average of sold customer orders on a truck that customers have yet to drive," Chrysler said.

The next order allocation of Ram 1500 EcoDiesel trucks will open in early March, the automaker said.

The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel delivers 20 mpg in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Ram is first to market with a small-displacement, turbodiesel engine in a half-ton pickup truck. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is equipped with a new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In comparison, a 2014 Ram 1500 with a 5.7-liter V8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission delivers 14 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

All Ram dealerships in the U.S. will offer the diesel version of the Ram 1500. Production of the diesel truck began in February with a group of "specialized trucks in popular configurations," Chrysler said.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers apparently have few qualms about plunking down money on the highly anticipated 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, even without kicking the tires or sliding behind the wheel for a test drive.

Shows what the consumers want, I've been for a smaller diesel for a long time. Lets see if Ford or GM follow suit.
