Favorite car ever

This is my favorite car ever. It's closing in on 300,000 miles and shows no signs of quitting. The paint (black) is incredibly durable; still shiny after 15 years in New England. While some argue about winter driving, I've found it outstanding as long as you fit snow tires. I maintain it "by the book" and have never had anything fail. I do most of the maintenance myself; it's very easy to work on. I like the way it performs and drives.

Durable, safe, reliable.

Very nice basic straightforward model. Owned 4 between 1986 and 2005 all pre- 1990. An outstanding, safe and reliable straightforward vehicle. I would purchase be these forever and had them down from generation to generation if I could figure out a way to replace the poor quality air conditioner. Placing a board or cardboard (color coordinated with the interior, of course) over the dash above the a/c controls makes huge difference but a/c still can't cope day in and day out when it's really hot or in slow city traffic. Simple, straightforward engine and drive train design makes it easy and simple for do-it-yourself maintenance.

Yaaawn...

The 240 has a strong (as in reliable) engine, and is purportedly safe, but that is it. The engine is anemic and roars like an 18 wheeler in the lower gears. Handling reminds me of a large moving van. The seats are not comfortable, and at some point all of the interior trim pieces get brittle and explode on contact. The exterior trim pieces have a habit of falling off too. I have had two of these (long story), both "wine" red, and both paint jobs have faded badly. The exterior styling inspires only extended yawns; espcially ugly are the large plastic headlights. I have owned a lot of cars, these are by far the least fun to drive.

Loyalty-Pain

Owned since new. Repairs are expensive. Exhaust is a major drag - replaced three times in 12 years. Motor is good. Car can take a beating from kids. Sound system never very good. Brakes OK. Good gas mileage - surprising pep from the 2.3L 4-banger. This car did the job it was purchased to do. Driver's leg-room a real drag for tall people! Geez - you'd think the Swedes would get it right.

A Sliding Tank

This car was not designed to be driven in snow! It is rear wheel drive, and too much of the vehicle's weight is on the front wheels. Thus, the rear wheels have no traction on snow, and the vehicle is like a sliding tank. On the plus side, the vehicle is very solid; its engine and body are very good; and it is extremely reliable. On the negative, the fan/heater is way too noisy, and it does not control air temperature very well. In addition, I give the radio/cassette/speakers a rating of zero. Finally, to press the gas pedal in this car you have to move your foot too much to the left which makes for an uncomfortable position, especially on long trips!
