Used 2004 Volkswagen Touareg V6 AWD 4dr SUV (3.2L 6cyl 6A) Consumer Reviews
premature infatuation
Me thinks I bought too quickly. After 3 previous VW purchases (over the 7 cars in my past), and a nice test drive, I thought I was making a wise purchase. After less than 3K miles, and 90 days, I am regretting this selection. V-6 does NOT have enough power - shame on VW for thinking so, and asking 5K more for a V8. Quirky and tempermental electrical system (numerous warning lights coming and going w/ no resolve from the dealer - YET). Interior trim peeling on driver door (yuck, did I buy a KIA)?! Can't sell it for what I owe- feel I have a middle of the road car at a high-end price - as I expected much more from VW and much more in a 40K car. Hope VW is listening (this may be my last VW)
Can't keep it running
It's been in the shop more time (almost) than in my garage. QC saddly lacking. Engine quits unexpectedly. 6-cylinder engine hopelessly underpowered, even going uphill at freeway speeds. The goofy transmission hunts and pecks endlessly to find the right gear and has to rev the engine very high to get where it wants to go. Styling doesn't wear well either. It's looking more like a typical bar-of-soap car every time I look at it. Even the leather is showing wear and tear and is beginning to look cheap. And this is only 6-months old!! VW should concentrate on making cheap bugs and stay out of marked segments where it doesn't belong.

Best German SUV on the market
Just purchased a Touareg and I love it. Also checked out the BMW X5, and the Mercedes M class. The Touareg was hands down my favorite. This is my 3rd VW. I also had a Jetta and a GTI.
What have I gotten myself into
I bought the 2004 Touareg in Aug. of 2005 and it has been nothing but trouble ever since. For all the problems I have had, I always had to take it back at least twice because it was not done right the first time. I have had problems with the amplifiers that had to be replaced two times. The tire indicator has always had a malfunction, but it was not until after the warranty that the dealer finally admitted that all 2004's Touaregs have this problem. And most recently the horn does not work at all, which will cost $438 to fix!! My advise it not to buy a 2004. And I hate that they do not have loaner car service. I am at the dealer so much they are programed in my cell phone as a personal contact.
Dream Car
After hearing my wife go on and on about wanting to upgrade her Jetta to a Touareg, I finally purchased her a used 2004 model with only 14,000 miles on it. I have to say this is by far the neatest vehicle on the road. It feels lke a Sherman tank, but is nimble, fun to drive, and gets a lot of attention. I would honestly say there is not another vehicle on the road that I would prefer, even if spending twice as much. VW did a phenominal job with their entry into the SUV market.
