Great Car
In almost 80,000 miles of driving, I can honestly say this has been a great car. My dealership has been outstanding. Except for the two recalls that were handled promptly, all other service visits were for wear and tear items like normal light bulbs burn out, vacuum hoses need to be replaced, etc. I'm not trying to be a VW apologist, but in my opinion a lot of the things that people complain about in this forum are maintenance issues, not reliability issues. Regarding the turbo/oil system issues, I have had no oil problems with this car, but I have used synthetic since I purchased this car. I think this should have been standard with a turbo engine, anyway.
I hope you are a mechanic
V-6, 5 speed. Gets great gas mileage - 26 in town, and 33 hwy. Leather interior still looks new. However, when things go south, they go quickly. Keep an eye on CV boots over 60k. At 70k, the whole top of the engine started leaking, and after 2 re-do's of the valve cover seals, they still leak. Shocks shot at 30k. Headlights go every 10K until I disabled the DRL's. Electronics in driver's door shot. Coating on interior peels. Sunroof is possessed. But - I won't sell it because the new Passat looks Japanese, nothing this good looking gets mileage like this, I still get comments on how unique and cool it is, so overall - if you are a mechanic - you can't go wrong!

An Excellent Value & Fun to Drive
(1) It delivers 273 ft.lbs. of screaming torque at only 2,750 RPM, so the full power is available right away. It handles in a sporty, solid way, providing good road feel and just enough cushioning on rough patches. (2) See my suggestions below regarding the interior. In addition, as VW doesn't offer a navigation system (a must for me) and the Monsoon stereo system is just okay, the dealer was willing to, and did, have a first-rate combined DVD-based Kenwood navigation- stereo system installed at my request by an aftermarket dealer for cost -- $4,000. I also opted for trunk-mounted VW's 6-CD changer. (3) Total price: $40,000 + taxes/tags.

I have owned the car since new. It has performed well over that time with only routine maintenance required. I would buy another one (assuming it was taken care of) in a minute.
Black 01 GLX 4Motion Wagon
I absolutely love our GLX 4Motion Wagon. My wife and I both state that we will definitely purchase another Passat Wagon or Audi S4/A6 Avant for our next family transportation. Very pratical and economical. Great looks and wonderful Germanic handling characteristics with a great firm, but comfortable ride to boot. Indigo blue lights at night for the dash are real cool. I also have received several compliments on what a great looking, quality wagon it is. I own an 01 BMW 325Cic convertible for my weekend fun and the German engineering really shows on these vehicles in the quality and the handling characteristics.
