Used 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6 4dr Sedan (2.8L 6cyl 5M) Consumer Reviews
We love our 2001 GLX VR6
The car is solid and handles very well. The VR6 has plenty of power but seems to really come on-line at higher speeds and RPM's. The leather interior is of superior quality and the Monsoon stereo really cranks and has many features. The sport package really helps the car handle well even at speeds in excess of 100 mph and the 17" wheels really set off the appearance and stance of the car. This car has been often mistaken for a BMW with good reason and is a cousin of the Audi A-4.
poor man's audi / bmw
Bought it new two years ago and overall have really enjoyed this car. The VR6 motor is outstanding, but does use more gas than the 4 cyl. models. Body roll is a little excessive in fast corners, but it grips well when pushed hard. Ride is plush, quiet and smooth. Very comfortable for road trips. When I first picked up the car the cruise didn't work and the climate control wouldn't switch to defrost. Dealer fixed both problems promptly, and I haven't had a problem with the car since. Guess I've been lucky (knock on wood) as I see a lot of reliability issues from other folks.

What else could go wrong?
I don't even know where to begin. The first year I got the car I had transmission problems. That same year my check engine light came on and I have taken it to the dealer so many times for that problem only for them to tell me one lie after another. Everytime I took it in I payed for them to fix something else. Since then my check engine light is has stayed on for most of the time and I just ignore it. My windows go up when I press down and vice versa. Most recently my car is having trouble starting. Not worth the trouble.
will never buy a jetta again
I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER VW PERIOD,THEY VERY NICE FEATURES BUT, RELIABILITY IS NOT THERE.I'VE HAD PROBLEMS W/THE CD CHANGER MORE THAN ONCE,I'VE HAD PROBLEMS W/TRANSMISSION MORE THAN ONCE,I'VE HAD PROBLEMS W/THE EXHAUST (MAKING NOISES)AND THER WAS A RECALL ON THE POWER WINDOWS SYSTEM TOO...ANYWAY IS BEEN TERRIBLE TO OWN THIS VEHICLE SO,I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND A VW CAR.THANX.
Ticking Time Bomb
29k mi. Have replaced the transmission, AC..twice, window clips..twice (window dropped into door), climatronic ac thermostat, CD player, radio, cup holder, center console/leather arm rest..(handle broke), battery...(they used unsealed batteries before 2002 which leak in hot weather like here in Houston), and have reprogrammed transmission points...8 times (red lines and shakes car). There is 2 second delay when shifting from R to D. The brakes wear out at 15-20k mi and have no sound indicator so that you ruin the routers w/out even knowing it. This wolf in sheeps clothing will take every dollar you have in repairs.
