2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback
While I am the first to acknowledge small niggles with this car, I enjoy driving it so much, I just love it.
First, the love. I bought the XSE manual, which I’ve enjoyed driving through the winding hills between home and work. There is ample pep to get me up to speed around a corner, and a delightful acceleration as I drop it into 2nd and rev it up. Well balanced suspension, appreciate … the independent rear. Brakes work great without being touchy.
Interior is pretty and comfortable. Infotainment is more functional than Honda—my wife has a 2018 CR-V. Gauges are well done, although the big LCD center gauge is only really good for fuel economy. Seats are comfortable.
Outside is so pretty. I added OEM crossbars and mudflaps for a rally car aesthetic.
Now the niggles. The seat sensors are touchy so if I carry a case of water in the front passenger seat, I get a shrieking warning to buckle the imaginary passenger. If my 2 kids sit in the back, the car will think there is someone sitting in the middle seat resulting in a need for a ghost buckle.
The center console lid In my configuration does not slide forward, so I can’t comfortably rest my right elbow. Heated steering is only available in Canada.
The gas filler is really cheap looking.
The speakers are overly cheap, I took the dash tweeters out and they are the cheapest paper cones you could imagine. Not loving the door speakers either.
CarPlay generally works, but periodically, the interface will get clipped to an inch tall banner requiring me to replug. Also it launches too slow. The space allocated for the phone is too small and the phone will often slide off. Bluetooth pairing doesn’t work while using CarPlay. Would be great if there was a 2nd USB port for a thumb drive of music.
Don’t care for the OEM tires, to the point I much prefer my winter Bliztech I rode on during winter.
The auto brake hold and rev matching should default to on.
Not obvious how to show gas mileage per tank instead of gas mileage per trip. Not obvious what the use of 6th gear is versus 5th. Takes a lot of diligence to get 34mpg Highway, much more work then in my previous 2003 Civic.
Boot space is tiny and rear seating is cramped. Still I knew this when I choose a short, maneuverable car.
Still love the car.
