Most Fun For Under $30K With 4 Doors

2015 Subaru WRX
[Updated at 2 years ownership] I love most everything about the car. From the factory the only sore point in the Base model specs is the stereo. I lasted 3 months before the poor head unit and plastic speakers drove me to replacement. This car is a mod'rs dream. I've installed a Kartboy short shift plate, Group-N Pitch Stop mount, Group-N transmission rear support, White Line … transmission bushings, Hella horns and Crawford AOS. Everything else is OEM until I get past the 3/36K mark. This is a great car for the money. Yes, road noise is above avg (more so with these mods), but it is a sports car. Yes, there are a TON of interior rattles/buzz, but "Its what makes a Subaru a Subaru". Buy felt tape and use it. The handling is "wow". Power is very good when the turbo comes alive a little above 2000 RPM. 6 Speed manual is good. If you have a spouse that is always asking "What's the third pedal for?", the CVT equipped cars are great performers. Only a few issues. First, I've had are a whistling clutch throwout bearing when it is humid for the first 23 months. Not an unheard of issue with the WRX. The throwout bearing seems to have mostly cured itself one day after producing a smell and sound that usually accompanies a burned out clutch and $1000 repair bill. The dealer says the clutch still works fine, but won't address the issue further unless it gives out. Second, the car has a much more pronounce gas and oil smell than other modern cars. Reminds me of old school hot rods. The fuel smell isn't nearly as strong as it used to be. Dealer said that if it starts leaking fuel on the ground or catches fire, bring it back in and they'll try to find the source. I carry around a 10 lb fire extinguisher. Lastly, the interior buzzing and rattling are getting the better of my attempts at silencing them. I had a mildly modified Acura TSX prior to the WRX. The WRX is clearly a more fun car.
[ 01/2020] Sold the car at 2 years and 10 months. There was nothing particularly wrong with the car. I guess I got tired of the stop and go traffic on my commute and while the car isn't terrible in that type of traffic, it takes precise gas pedal inputs to modulate speed w/o getting jumpy in lower gears. Plus I wanted a car my wife could drive. Bless her heart, but she simply isn't a manual transmission person. Still lover her and I still miss the WRX. Sometimes I reeeeaaaallllyyy miss the WRX. Especially on twisty roads or driving at high speeds. Nothing like going 70 MPH, nailing the throttle and rocketing to over 100 with more potential still available. Looked into a CVT version of the car, but it suffers from incessant buzzing and higher RPM when you ask it to perform.
