2024 Chevrolet Trax
I've had my Trax 1RS now for about 3 weeks and have just under 2k miles on the clock. I bought this as an extra car for my teenage drivers to use, as it was similar in price to some of the late model used cars we were looking at and had all the latest safety equipment and a fresh warranty. The sticker was right under $24k and I got mine for $20k (+tax & tags) after applying my GM … points, educator discount, and the dealer discount.
First of all, $20k is a tremendous value for what you get here. It's sharp looking in the RS trim, has heated seats and steering wheel, wireless Carplay (which none of our other cars have) and remote start, is roomy enough for 4 people and their gear, and is easy to drive with good access and visibility. Really has me re-thinking all future car purchases - you can get features and style for less than $40k. After 2k miles the only feature I really am missing is the push-button start (this has an old-school key) but that's one of the features of the next trim levels starting with the LT. The kids liked the looks of the RS over the LT, though, and we did not want the leatherette that is on the 2RS and Activ, plus we were trying to stick to the $20k price point.
As far as performance and mileage, it's exactly as expected. My wife and I took two long test drives to make sure it would be enough to get out of it's own way but not too much for the kids to get in trouble. It definitely won't get you in trouble from the powertrain side. And while I think the mileage should be better from a 3 cyl, I was fully aware of the 28/32 rating and am getting right in that range. Around town for the first 800 miles of break-in we got an average of about 27 and then I took it on a 1200 mile trip from PA to FL and the average was right at 30, and that was doing 75-80 mph with some mountainous terrain at the beginning of the trip. And this should improve a bit with the warmer weather. Plus, no hip or back pain at the end of the drive - the seats are on the firm side, but perfectly comfortable (for me.)
As far as reliability, all I can say is no issues so far. I saw other user's complaints about glitchy infotainment and intermittent windows but so far have not seen that. Mine was built in Nov 2023, though, so it should have all of the known software remedies already in place. There is always some risk of these issues on the first year of any redesigned car, so there is a bit of risk here. Time will tell if this ends up being a reliable car, but because of the value proposition we were willing to take the risk.
If you are in the market for this class of vehicle on a budget I definitely recommend you take a look at the Trax. But take a nice long test drive on local and highway roads to make sure you are happy with the driving dynamics, performance, comfort, and features. It's amazing when I read some of these reviews that people don't seem to understand what they are buying. When I return to PA it gets turned over to the kids and I'll sell their old beater, but I really am enjoying my time with it!
Update 9/21/24: Still a happy customer for the price paid. Now just under 9k miles on the clock (includes 2 round trips from PA to FL), average MPG right around 30, and trouble-free. The kids are very happy with it. Only complaint I had from the multiple long-drives are the very hard door rests - definitely a cheap improvement they could make. But the kids are younger and they don't care...
Update 3/24/24: Kids do all local driving so only around 11k miles in total but seems to be holding up well. No problems to report. Will definitely look at getting another one when sharing a car is no longer practical.
