2019 Audi e-tron
In the future, electric vehicles will be as common as automatic transmissions have become, and the Audi e-tron may be remembered as one of the cars that paved the way. It’s not revolutionary like Teslas were, it’s not a noble struggle like some other EVs, it’s simply a refined, reliable car that happens to run on electrons.
Audi’s first all-electric vehicle falls between the Q5 and Q7 … in size and feel, except for the quiet hum of its motors on each axle, and its alarmingly smooth acceleration. It has the luxury of power in reserve at all speeds.
The build quality is Audi solid, and the combination of sound insulation and air suspension give the cabin a quiet, restful feel. I find myself wanting to escape the world to the comfort of a long drive. You can even use the Audi app to set the car to your preferred temperature before you step in.
The battery range isn’t close to that of any Tesla long-range model, but if you have access to a charger at home, work or in your neighborhood, you’ll have more than enough juice for regular driving. For road trips, use PlugShare to plan where you’ll stop to charge. Audi offers two years of free charging at the Electrify America and Electrify Canada networks. There aren’t many of these stations where I live, but the charging is a blazing fast 150kW, and did I mention it’s free?
Like many new EV drivers I became obsessed with the ins and outs of charging. Once you’ve found your rhythm of where, when and how you charge, though, range anxiety fades away.
The e-tron will disappoint anyone looking for a movement or a manifesto. It’s simply a powerful, comfortable luxury vehicle that costs very little to fuel and puts zero emissions into the air. It’s the future. If you can manage the high price, enjoy it.
